The Housemartin
About the home
Our 60m² gite is situated on the ground floor of our home,a pretty Maison de Maitre dated 1901. We named it The Housemartin in honour of the birds that nest throughout the summer months under the roof of our barn.
The private entrance opens into a bright and spacious kitchen/living area which is fully equipped and stylishly furnished.
There is a 10m² fully fitted bathroom with bath and overhead shower.
The 24m² bedroom offers space, luxury and the promise of a good nights sleep in the super comfy king size bed. There is a cosy, fairy-lit corner with a double bed for children, partioned by curtains thus giving you the feel of a seperate room.
Having previously dealt in the Antiques and Interiors business we have aimed for a typically French feel and the gite reflects this perfectly.
Just outside your door we have created a decked, shady area which is perfect for alfresco dining or for simply lazing under the trees with a good book and bottle of local wine.
We welcome families and have all sorts of toys and games for children from trampolines to play houses, swings and slides.
The 11x5m private and securely fenced pool has a 50m² deck with sofas and chairs, sun loungers, parasol and of course plenty of pool toys, there's even a surf board!
Although we are in the centre of the village the grounds are totally private , the garden is enclosed by trees and hedging and the pool is secluded,so you never need to feel overlooked. If you have children you can totally relax knowing that the furthest they can be is playing hide& seek in one of our barns.

Enquire nowThe Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
Aquitaine is a really fabulous and diverse region of France.Bordered by the Atlantic coast with miles and miles of sandy dunes and surf, inland to breathtaking countryside abundant with forests and rivers, vineyards and Chateaux. There are beautiful towns and spectacular cities, full of culture and steeped with history - right back to prehistoric times.
St Martin de Gurson is on the border of Gironde and the Dordogne ,1.5hrs from the coast,we're 40 minutes from Bordeaux and 40 mins from Perigueux. The climate is superb, the food fabulous and the sights plentiful. The Romans chose this area for wine making- there must be 100 consecutive dry, hot days for good wine and you can't beat the local Petrus!!
You will find a wealth of sights and activities in the Dordogne for families or couples , whether it's exploring in and around the Mediaeval towns of Sarlat or Perigueux, canoeing on the Dordogne, wine-tasting in St Emilion , sampling the delicious local cuisine at a relaxed night market or simply basking in the sun, there is something for everyone
The Bergerac / St Emilion area
We are located in the heart of St Martin de Gurson, one of a number of picturesque villages in the Bergerac/Bordeaux wine region.Set amidst forests and vineyards there is plenty to do either by car or on foot.
In the village there is a grocer/bakers,tennis court and general store selling almost everything. There is also a bar/cafe a stones throw from the house.
It's 10 minutes drive to the nearest town of Montpon where you can find supermarkets, several boutiques, hairdresser, pharmacies etc
Just 3km from our house there is the Lac de Gurson, a beautiful lake for swimming. There is a sandy beach, 5bar/ restaurants, picnic tables, play areas,a water slide and pedalos. It's a wonderfully relaxing place to spend the day or evening.
If you're into markets there's one everyday in the immediate area.Saturday morning at St Foy (15mins by car)is a must being one of the top 100 in France, you can find all sorts of goodies and the atmostphere is fantastic- truly French.
Throughout July and August there are also local night markets , the most popular being at Le Pizou which is a 10 min drive from us.This is a great evening, there are tables set out in the village square, music and lots of stalls selling local cuisines from Confit de Canard to Oysters and Moules and of course plenty of wine!
St Emilion with it's ancient cobbled streets and world famous wines is just a 25 minutes drive west through stunning vineyards ,dotted with spectacular Chateaux..Everyone loves this town,it's full of history and beautifully kept, with wonderful buildings and Churches, fabulous restaurants and smart boutiques.
In the opposite direction you will find numerous historic towns such as Bergerac famous for it's wine and that old philanderer Cyrano!
Medieval Sarlat and Perigueux are unmissable with the surrounding countryside full of prehistoric caves(Lascaux), ancient dwellings and impressive castles. There's also heaps of activities from canoeing on the Dordogne river to zip sliding through treetops !!
Heading north from us around 35mins away there is the pretty village of Aubeterre,it makes me think of the book/film "CHOCOLAT"it's well worth a visit just to sit in the square with a coffee or explore the monolithic Church of St Jean, built into the cliff face -it's rather spooky ! Take your swimming things too as the river here is wondeful for a dip.
Trying to keep it brief is hard as there is just so much to do and see in the Dordogne,it's the reason why holidaymakers keep returning year after year not forgetting neighbouring Gironde with spectacular Bordeaux 45mins away and the Atlantic Coast, Dune de Pyla, surfers town Lacanau and the resort town of Arcachon all just 1.5hrs drive away.

The Gite was large and spacious clean and well equipped. We also made good use of the outside area with dining table and BBQ. The swimming pool was a great size and always clean and ready for an inviting dip. The front was gated and our car was kept secure when we were not day touring the Dordogne. The village had all you needed for basic needs and we met a lot of expats and french locals alike in the local pub having some entertaining nights. What made the holiday special was meeting Pierre and Antonia and family. They were great hosts and incredibly friendly - we had some great conversations, and their children were charming. We invited the whole family for a farewell BBQ and had a wonderful evening/night. At the same time Pierre & Antonia were always conscious to respect our space - but we always welcomed their company and chat. Pierre took us wine tasting and the price and quality and quantity of wine we took back kept ourselves and friends happy for many months after. I am now a French Wine convert. We had a great time and a fantasic relaxing and memorable holiday - highly recommended. |

Spent two weeks at The House Martin last summer. Couldn't fault our stay. Very well equipped gite for our family. Fantastic pool, and decked area my 1 year old son totally enjoyed his time exploring the outdoor space. Antonia and Pierre very welcoming and at hand to offer lots of advice(especially when it came to exploring the area). Super deals at local vineyards with the help of Pierre. Great local markets and lakes for days away. Enjoyed evening food market in village all the locals were very welcoming. We would definitely book this gite again without any hesitation. See you again, many thanks for your great hospitality Antonia and Pierre. |
