Le Manoir

House | 4 bedrooms | sleeps 8

Key Info
  • Great for children of all ages
  • Car essential
  • No pets allowed

Le Manoir is a wonderful ‘L' shaped building dating from the 17th Century and boasting a wealth of period features. It is one of the most imposing houses in the village and is marked on the map as a property of distinction.

The house has been extensively restored combining contemporary and luxurious furnishings with ancient exposed beams, fireplaces and ‘lavebos' (stone sinks in the walls). There is even an arrow slot in the kitchen with far reaching views to spot enemy attack!

The rooms are on a grand scale. There are three large bedrooms within the main body of the house and a separate 4th ground floor bedroom (accessed from the kitchen entrance hall) and located in the former wine press now called the west wing.

The main entrance to the Manoir is at the end of a path through its central courtyard terrace, lined with topiary box hedging planters.

The substantial entrance hallway leads to the stone staircase straight ahead, plus beautiful downstairs loo (with feature stone lavebo) to the left of the staircase - great for quick visits during the day.

To the right through a double set of glazed doors is the salon. It has a high-beamed ceiling with stunning crystal chandelier, an 18th century fireplace (no longer in use), and 2 big comfy sofas which are ideal if you fancy a night snuggled up watching a movie on the 42 inch LCD TV & DVD which also has UK freeview channels.

This impressive room typifies the wonderful combination of old and rustic charm accessorised perfectly with touches of glamour and chic throughout the house. On one side you will find two sets of French windows looking out onto rolling pasture where you can spot the cows, calves, birds of prey and deer; the other side overlooks the sun-trap courtyard terrace with its barbeque and plethora of chairs to sit and relax, read or chat over a glass of wine.

To the left of the entrance hall, through another double set of glazed doors, is the music room, housing a 100-year-old ebonised grand piano (with lockable lid) and another stunning fireplace (no longer in use) dating from the 19th century. This room links Le Manoir's kitchen with the rest of the house.

The fully-equipped kitchen boasts fabulous exposed beams, and in its centre, a huge oak table is complemented by 8 modern Perspex chairs. Once again there is a beautiful style exuded using a combination of old and new, such as an antique butcher's block and traditional freestanding kitchen cupboards, standing side by side with the latest contemporary polished work surfaces, light fittings and a modern dual-fuel double range style cooker. The kitchen is also equipped with a dishwasher and a walk-in pantry with American-style fridge-freezer (dispensing cold filtered water and ice cubes at the push of a button) and also a laundry area with washing machine.

Leading from the kitchen back round to the front courtyard terrace in front of the house is the ‘entree', the most frequently used entrance, with a huge glazed panel and door plus an extremely efficient log burner and leather armchairs. This is used as a great safe play area; gated from the kitchen, and allowing you the space to get creative in the kitchen without your little ones under your feet. There are an array of toys in the toy cupboard to keep them amused for hours. The fact that there are also huge doors leading out from this area onto the courtyard at the front of the house means they can pop in and play in the cool anytime they wish too - and without having access to any other parts of the house.

The ground floor bedroom (the new west wing suite) is accessed from the entree via two stone steps. It is a huge, beautifully-decorated double bedroom boasting an original fireplace, oak floor, exposed beams, exposed stone lavebo and beautiful antique wrought-iron double bed. It has its own spacious en-suite/dressing room with shower, basin, loo and fitted wardrobes. This is a perfect room for grandparents as it is set away from the other bedrooms and affords plenty of peace and quiet plus ‘step free' access to the courtyard terrace via French doors opening onto the front courtyard.

Upstairs, a big landing with a French window ‘Juliet' balcony overlooking the courtyard leads to two large twin rooms, one of which can be converted into a double with a specially designed bed. Both have high ceilings and big windows looking out across the countryside and are brimming with toys - including lots of role-play toys such as a Melissa and Doug kitchen & accessories.

These share a delightful family bathroom (conveniently located on the landing between the two); this is a luxurious room with a contemporary freestanding bath, twin sinks, shower and loo, plus a fabulous feature in the form of an ancient stone sink in the wall.

Finally, the master bedroom is located at the end of the hallway via its neat en-suite shower room with loo and mini sink. This spacious and elegant bedroom has an impressive vaulted ceiling (over 3m high) with exposed beams. It is situated in the tower, the oldest part of Le ‘Manoir', and boasts big dual aspect windows looking out over the estate, plus an internal window at floor level, which looks down to the entree below (toughened glass). Thanks to its beautiful antique cast-iron four-poster bed (king size with orthopaedic, pocket-sprung mattress), you can expect to enjoy wonderfully restful sleep here.

You will not be short of choices as to where you might want to spend time outside at Le Manoir - there are no less than three outside dining areas in total. One is in the front courtyard; south facing, it seats 8 and is perfect for breakfast, lunch and afternoon dining. The second is accessed from the west side of the kitchen via French doors and seats 8 (perfect for evening meals and watching the sun set). Finally, a tiny terrace for two - east facing, accessed via the salon - catches the early morning sun and is ideal for the first coffee of the morning.

Parent points:

The small terrace accessed via the salon French doors is not suitable for young children as it consists of two sets of stone steps and there is rather a large drop to the grass below. It is advised that this area of the garden is not used by little ones as there is also a wall running the width of the lawn which has a big drop down to a path. This should not be a problem as there is so much space to use and most of the ‘action' happens on the other side of the house (the courtyard side where all the play equipment is)

The kitchen has open shelving and a low-level oven; it is for this reason that there is a designated play area in the entree. Gated off from the kitchen, it allows you the opportunity to prepare meals in peace whilst still being able to keep an eye on your little ones

Young children should be supervised on the stairs as there is one section that has a large gap between the spindles (on the bend).
