The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region

Dordogne is one of the most popular areas of France as well as one of the warmest and most clement.
It is said that Dordogne is the land of a thousand and one castles: It is not a legend!
Main Medieval Cities:
- Sarlat : Capital of the Périgord Noir region. A number of hotels and other buildings display the classic architecture of the XVth century including some exquisite roofs. A number of hotels and other buildings have retained their original XVth century architecture with their light stone and roofing techniques. Sarlat has a higher number of listed or inscribed builings in one square kilometre than anywhere else in Europe
- Périgueux: Capital of the Dordogne, and namesake of the local 'Perigord' area, the town contains 39 buildings and monuments of historical interest. Vesunna, the gallo-roman museum, is well worth a visit. As you wind through the lanes of Perigueux, built during the medieval-Renaissance era, you can sense that your surroundings are steeped in nearly 2000 years of history.
- Bergerac: Between the River Dordogne, one of the most beautiful rivers of France, and the vineyards of Pecharmant, Bergerac offers you roman churches, narrow lanes, half-timbered houses, walks in Gabarre, excursions pedestrian along the old paths near the river, etc...
The south-west corner of the Perigord is also famous for its Bastides, a string of "new" towns created in the 13th century, by both the English and the French, essentially to promote commerce. Later, fortified, they became very important in the Hundred Years War and changed hands many times. Sainte Foy la Grande, Bergerac, Eymet, Duras, Beaumont, Monpazier, Issigeac & Monflanquin are just some of the medieval towns within a short drive.
Château des Vigiers, 27 hole golf course, one of the best golf resorts of France, is only 10 minutes away.
In addition to the general relaxation and various sporting activities on the property, you can explore the many treasures of the Perigord, an abundance of prehistoric painted & carved caves, picturesque markets & medieval villages, bastide towns, roman churches and abbeys, excellent restaurants, outstanding food, some of the world’s finest wines: Monbazillac, Saint-Emilion and just a little further afield, Sauternes, Margaux, Pomerol, Saint-Estèphe… and at least thirteen different kind of Bergerac wine to discover locally.
The Bergerac / Monbazillac area
The Bergerac region is a sightseer’s delight with its historical monuments, cloisters and caves. There is something to surprise you at every turn.
The region is particularly lively in Spring, Summer and beginning of Autumn, with outdoor events galore.
Each town or village has its own fetes and events. Open-air markets at local bastide towns are a daily event, also night markets with outdoor meals, arts, crafts, clothing and attractions: E.g.,in Eymet (10 mn), where you can seat down on the market square and savour mussels, barbecued duck, foie gras and other delicacies with some local red, white or rosé wine while the youngsters can wander off and find a few souvenirs.
In Bergerac ( 10 minutes)
Take your time strolling through the lanes bordered by wood-worked homes and several residences of yesteryear. Cyrano de Bergerac awaits you!…for wine tasting, a ride aboard a traditional barge or a tour by “little train”. Enter the wine history thanks to exhibitions, projections and tasting sessions offered by La Maison des Vins with a charming cloister, and where events & entertainments take place all year round.
Continue your tour with the Tobacco Museum and the Museum of Wine and Barging Tradition which highlight the important role of the river in the social and economic development of Bergerac over the last centuries. Within a a stone throw, any sculpture lover will enjoy visiting the remarkable Musée Costi.
In every direction around Bergerac, the undulating countryside is stripped with vines.
Going from many castles ( Monbazillac, Lanquais…) to marvellous places of interest
( Moulin de la Rouzique in Couze, the medieval village of Issigeac, Caves de Maxange in Le Buisson de Cadouin…), give yourself enough spare time to also discover Le Pays des Bastides ( Monpazier, Beaumont du Périgord…). In the opposite direction, leading to Saint Emilion, have a stop at Tower of Montaigne and visit Gallo-Roman Ruins in Montcaret.
Sigoulès, the nearest village (4 km) has all the amenities of a typical French village including restaurants, supermarket, bakery, delicatessen, tabac, newsagents, café, pharmacy,
dentist, doctor’s office…

We are a family of 27, ages ranging from 2 years to 55 years with several teenagers inbetween. Le Grands Chenes is perched in amongst the most beautiful coutryside, lush, green and with views to die for, it couldn't possibly have been a better 'fit' for our family. Room after beautiful room, full of homeliness, charm and character and fully equipped with everything you could need to make a self-catering holiday work easily. The large pool (which believe me can take 26!, the jacuzzi, sauna, bikes, table tennis tables and volleyball net, ride on toys, pool toys, not to mention a large flat area at the front of the villa to play football (a must for our boys) mean't that there was not a single moment when we weren't all fully entertained. The local area is teeming with things to do, go-karts, canoeing down the Dordogne plus a most beautiful riding school at the end of your drive all at prices which pleased and surprised us. Bergerac is a ten minute drive and is just what you hope to find in a French town, full of quaint old buildings, fabulous street cafe's to eat and drink in and an ice-cream parlour which no less that 60 different flavours. Without exception every member of our family would not hesitate to recommend Les Grands Chenes, we would like to have booked for the same time next year but alas and not surprisingly August is fully booked. We will be back again. |

Our entire family (21, aged from 3 to 75) were agreed that our week at this house was an incredible success and that they had enjoyed every minute. We thought the house was perfect for our gathering, with everything we needed to make our time together a happy and enjoyable experience. We are so glad we chose it, and would gladly return if any opportunity arose. We would also recommend it to any other family group. The information given is accurate, with no exageration of the facilities or equipment. The property was clean and well maintained, and the owners charming and helpful. There are plentiful toys, bikes, games equipment and entertainment electronics. The pool alarm system is effective and gives peace of mind even if there are young children in the party. The kitchen equipment and clothes washing facilities are ample for large groups. Bedrooms and bathrooms easily divide up for multiple families. The major Leclerc supermarket is only 10 minutes drive away (but is not open on Sunday morning, though a slightly smaller, more local, one is). Bergerac wines are excellent, and there is plenty to visit and see locally, though we were so well occupied on site that we did not go out a lot. Truly, a holiday to remember! |
Guestbook for LES GRANDS CHENES in DORDOGNE
Excellent Property in Dordogne Area
My family (14 of us) and close friends just spent a week at Les Grand Chenes and our experience was excellent!! The property is wonderful. We were completely and totally satisfied with the property. It was well represented in the descriptions but what you could not capture online was the view from this beautiful home and the feeling of peace! It is really not describable. The home contained everything we needed for so many people. Each bedroom and bath was well outfitted for the utmost in comfort. The outdoor dining areas were very nice and welcomed by all. We grilled outdoors as often as possible and at outside under the covered area. Even with so many people in the house at one time, we never felt crowded. There is just so many places to "hang out" and have privacy. The pool was very much appreciated and the "spa" area with the jacuzzi and sauna and exercise equipment was great. Marie-Jeanne and Daniel were so nice and accommodating. They would come early in the morning and clean the pool and jacuzzi and tend to the magnificent flower gardens on the property. We cut fresh flowers and enjoyed them everyday on our tables. There really are not enough words to describe this property and the area and the value. I am surely hoping to return to this property. The surrounding area has a lot to offer. My only wish is that I could have spent a second week just enjoying the house and property and not having to tour everyday to see the area! SO, spend two weeks here - to have enough time to see everything AND enjoy the property!!
Thanks Marie-Jeanne and Daniel for allowing us to make memories that will last a lifetime on your property!

"Relax in the Dordogne"
"This is the 4th year in a row that we have rented "Les Grands Chenes", a
beautiful country house in the Dordogne region of southern France. The photos
on the website don't do this house and the surrounding area justice. The views
from the house are wonderful, vineyards and gentle rolling hills. We also love
how incredibly quiet it is. There is a good-sized swimming pool and also a
jacuzzi and sauna which we use regularly.
The owners are amazing. They live close by so if anything ever breaks or you
can't find something, they come immediately to sort it out for you. They are
incredibly warm and hospitable.
The house itself is great because it has so many bedrooms that have en suite
baths. Many houses this size have a lots of bedrooms but only a handful of
bathrooms, whereas "Les Grands chenes" has a bathroom in almost every room. The
kitchen is large and has everything you need.
The other great thing about the house is that there are so many different
outdoor sitting areas. Other large country houses that we have rented in the
past, don't have this many different areas to sit and hang out outside. Some
shaded, some in the sunshine, it's perfect! And the gardens are simply amazing!
I highly recommend "Les Grands chenes". We've been going there for 4 years now,
and we will continue to go back every year. There is a lot to do in the
surrounding area, Bergerac is a great town and we love the local market full of
great fresh produce and lovely local vendors!

"Great place to stay for vacation"
"The Villa is very comfortable. There are many things available for children and also for older ones... Anyone can have its independence, be alone for a while... there is so much space! We have been staying there for 1 week for now 4 or 5 years, and it's difficult to find a propertie as noce to stay at!"

- "Fantastic place for a large group!"
"Just returned from a great week at Les Grands Chenes - 19 people, 10 adults, 9
kids aged between 18 months and 6 years - what a find- the location, the house,
the facilities all fantastic - the website does not do the house justice - it is
huge!
Owners were fabulous - providing information in person on how everything worked,
from the kitchen equipment through to the hot tub and pool alarm and ensured
everything ran smoothly for us all week
Would thoroughly recommend this place and hope to return"

"Fantastic holiday! "
“We've spent this summer one week in this great and I'm very pleased to conclude that it's even better than the pictures. We've spent a dream vacation in Bergerac with a large group. The property is clean and luxurious, the view is amazing and the facilities are unbelievable. We are already planning our next year holidays to this property again!

"Les Grands Chênes"
"We were a family of 10 including 3 young children staying for a period of 1
week. We were very impressed with the facilities that suited all of the age
groups and having spent several years at other properties in this area, we would
highly recommend this one. "

A beautiful holiday in the Perigord
We had a wondeful time in this house. It is very large, well equipped. We were there for the past 3 years with 4 families. The house, poolhouse and pool was always very tidy, and the garden is extremely relaxing. The view is overwhelming, and with a riding school next door our horse-hobby is also met. So we keep a lot of very good memories about our holidays.

"Perfect for family gatherings"
"We had a wonderful stay at Les Grand Chenes in May 2009. Our group of 21
included nine children (with ages ranging from one to 13 years), five
pensioners, and seven other adults, yet the house and grounds were so spacious
and well-equipped that it never felt crowded and it was always possible to find
a bit of space to yourself. We enjoyed mealtimes, whether taken inside or out,
as there was plenty of space for us all to sit down together - very important as
we were all together for a golden wedding anniversary celebration. Everyone -
not just the children - enjoyed the pool, sauna, jacuzzi, billiards, table
tennis and volleyball, and all the beds were incredibly comfortable. The owners
visited daily, but were very discreet, and were incredibly helpful, particularly
when one of our party had a car accident. The property is very close to
Bergerac, but cars are a must as taxis are quite expensive and daily trips to
buy food are essential to feed such a large party!"

"High recommended"
"2009 was our second year staying in this house. We had 19 including children
this time, and there was no problem accommodating that size of party The
property has all the facilities you could wish for - the only thing to add is
food. Gardens are beautiful and the view is spectacular.
Would definitely recommend the house and our wonderful hosts to anybody.
Will be back again."

"French paradise!"
"I just wanted to say (on behalf of everyone in our party) a big thank you for
letting us use your fabulous house last week. We all really enjoyed our time at
your house - it is beautiful and the vast amount of space both inside and out,
meant that we had to remind ourselves that there were 20 people in our party!!
Hope to return soon".

"The Best!"
"We had a fantastic family reunion - 24 of us from the US, Spain & UK and this
place really filled the bill - something for everyone from the ages of 6 to 86.
The delightful owners thought of everything, and a phone call would bring an
immediate response. There's lots to do in the area, but the children just
wanted to stay put - more than enough to keep them happy for the fortnight &
only wish we could have stayed longer! Would not hesitate in recommending Les
Grands Chenes - a perfect holiday - Thank you Marie-Jeanne and Daniel! "

"60th Birthday Celebration"
"We had no trouble finding the house, which is in an unspoilt, beautiful and
peaceful area, yet so close both to Bergerac and its airport. A highlight was
looking up to a sky un-polluted by lights, and listening to the nightingale
sing.
Our bedroom and the general areas were clean and well-maintained. There was a
little leakage of water from the base of the shower unit, but nothing a small
towel couldn't cope with.
Help and assistance was friendly, prompt but not intrusive.
There were plenty of things to do at the site - the pools, games, bicycles - and
the restaurants in the old town provided good and very reasonably-priced food
and local wines. We also enjoyed the river trip.
For us, the only real disappointment in the town was that almost everyone we met
was English and middle-aged - which was probably to do with the time of year
(mid-May) and that we only went out during the day. Having said that, they were
not the sort of English tourists to make you cringe!
We only stayed for a few days, and want to return to explore the other nearby
places."
Peter&sarah - Sawbridgeworth, Herts, England - May, 2008

"Brenda's 60th birthday!"
"My wife will not want to be reminded of the number, but Brenda, our family and
friends, 21 in total, will always remember the all too short a stay at Les
Grands Chenes.
Marie-Jeanne and Daniel, our congenial hosts played a large part in making it
such a success.
They recommended a wonderful restaurant, organised transport and also suggested
two chefs for a wonderful buffet in the house. Nothing was too much trouble for
them!
The property, grounds and views were magnificent and the web site only does them
partial justice. Perhaps some more photos of the gardens and surrounding
landscape would supplement what is already a wonderful description.
However, the only way to find out what it was like is to experience it for
yourself.
Highly recommended.

"The perfect location for a group of 8 to 20 people"
"Our wine group of 20 were looking for a location to visit Bordeaux. Daniel and
his wife were extremely helpful in finding everything we needed. They were there
for our arrival, they took us to Sarlat, hooked us up with great suggestion for
restaurants, etc. Thet were the bests hosts that our group have evere
encountered. I cannot say enough about their friendship and help during our
stay.
The house is perfectly set up with a full working kitchen, dining area for 20,
side building with 4 bedrooms, spa area for jacuzzi and full size in ground pool
overlooking the vineyards. Our favourite thing to do at the end of the busy day
was to sit at the patio overlooking the valley vineyards at sunset and drink
wine til midnight or later.
The location was outside of the beaten path which was enjoyable. Very country
like yet within 10 minutes you could be in Bergerac. Initially, our focus was on
wine but there are so many little towns, villages, castles, open markets, etc
that we focused on sight-seeing and eating more than Bordeaux. Bergerac has
great wines, fois gras, and plenty of duck while Sarlat, Issigiac, Rocamadour,
St. Emillion are all within a days driving.
Would I go back?? IN A HEART BEAT. Just writing this makes me want to visit
Daniel and Marie-Jeanne again. I know I speak for the rest of the people in my
group. Please contact me if you want more information"

"Great place"
"Myself and 20 friends spent a week here in September 2007 during RWC. It was
great. The house and surroundings are great and they have a really great sound
system with loads of vinyl records which you can put on and hear by the pool.
All in all an amazing place to stay and very private. Massive rooms and great
facilities.
Great little markets at nearby villages on Sundays with cheeses and wines
galore. Also a great golf course and dayspa nearby which was amazing.

"Lotus 7 Club stay at Les Grands Chenes"
"We are a group of up to 18 people who, every year, travel to France in our
Lotus sports cars to stay in a rented house. Les Grands Chenes is still our
favourite of all the properties we have stayed in and we are determined to
return here in the future
On arrival, we were warmly greeted by the owners who showed us around and
explained details of the house, its facilities and information regarding the
local area. The house was immaculately presented and very obvious it is greatly
enjoyed by the owners who look after it and the gardens with loving care.
The facilities were very impressive and the views from the pool area are simply
stunning in this tranquil location. The local shops are within easy reach
although a car is required to fetch most things.
We have no hesitation in recommending Les Grands Chenes for an unforgettable
vacation in an outstandingly beautiful location."
