The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

Le Grand Chemin de la Vie is a Bed and Breakfast in the beautiful Dordogne region of France. A diverse region with lots to see and do. We are in the Purple Region named for the huge about of vineyards producing award winning wines. Le Grand Chemin de la Vie is just 20 minutes from the UNESCO's World Heritage village of St. Emilion. St. Emilion is set into a hillside on the north side of the river Dordogne, this twelfth century town consists predominantly of old stone houses with shuttered windows and cobbled streets. Hidden beneath the town is Europe's largest underground church, a magnificent place hewn out of the soft rock by Benedictine monks in the ninth century. Louis XIV described the wines of St Emilion as the 'nectar of the gods'.

Also just a few minutes up the road from Montcaret is Castillion la Bataille. In 1453, Castillion la Bataille was where the last major battle of the Hundred Years war was fought. It is here also that every summer in late July and early August, a spectacular floodlit re-enactment of that battle takes place. Spread over 16 acres and involving some 800 participants, 500 of whom are actors with 50 cavalry, this is a magnificently organised and executed show. The highlight is an intense two hour battle incorporating amazing stunts and pyrotechnics.

Le Grand Chemin de la Vie Bed & Breakfast is easy to find on the main route (D936) between Bergerac and Bordeaux.

Bergerac

Le Grand Chemin de la Vie is a Bed and Breakfast in the beautiful historic Village of Montcaret. We boasts an 11th Century church and also a Roman Villa, only partly excavated and said to be one of the best in all of France, which sits in the centre of the village.

The mosaics are superb and these alone are well worth a visit. The cruciform gallery is said to have been the largest in the entire 5th century Roman Empire. The villa had a warm-air heating system, a swimming pool and private thermal baths.

A Romanesque church is situated within the confines of the villa and, buried under the floor mosaics tombstones, are 5th century barbarian Visigoth tombs. An old wash-house is currently undergoing renovation. Guided tours are available.

The commune of Montcaret is spread over 1706 hectares and includes many particular points of interest, whether it be its geographical situation (the name Montcaret comes from the Latin Mons Carretum meaning 'mount of the crossroads') or its historical wealth (the Protestant scitadel of Montravel was situated in this commune), the diversity of its heritage, the beauty of its

vine-covered hillsides or the high-quality wines which can be procured from Montcaret's many wine-producers.

Montcaret has a small handy supermarket, an extrodinary pâtisserie, a hair dressers, a tabac shop, two antique shops and a restaurant - everything on our very own doorstep.
