Home description

La Bidonne is a beautiful old stone house perched on the side of the hill overlooking the valley with unforgettable views over the vineyards to the village of Saussignac with its chateau and church on the horizon. Approached along a quiet lane through the vineyards the house rests at the end of the road in its own private grounds. The house, which dates from the 16th century, has been sympathetically restored to include all modern amenities without detracting from its ancient charm and character.

La Bidonne is in the Comune of Gaegec et Rouillac. The village's stunning 12th century, family owned, fortified Chateau is a short walk from the house. The village is also the home of Patricia Atkinson, the award winning wine maker and author.

The main doors to the house open into a spacious double height salon with great timber pillars that reach up into the high roof beams. A period fireplace, solid oak floor and local stonework with antique Perigourdine furniture and large comfortable sofas make it a very welcoming room that is the heart of the house. There are 3 double bedrooms and a bathroom and shower on the ground floor and a further double bedroom with en-suite bathroom on the first floor. The large kitchen/dining room opens off a wide passageway that runs the width of the house.

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region

The towns of Bergerac (15km) and Sainte Foy La Grande (10 km) are wonderful medieval market towns on the Dordogne and both have fine local markets and restaurants. There are many other places to visit, from St Emilion to the Lascaux caves and Roc Gageac where the Dordogne carves its way through a canyon and houses are built into the vast rock face. Historic castles and chateaux abound some with superb gardens including the famous 11th century chateau at Monbazillac. Nearly all the vineyards in the region will be only too pleased to welcome you into their ‘cave’ for a free wine tasting. Apart from the different local open markets there is a large Leclerc supermarket near Bergerac which has all you may need.

Bergerac / Saussignac area

There are a number of local walks - Saussignac, for example, takes 15 to 20 minutes along an old Roman road through the vines. In Gageac there is the beautiful Chateau and the superb vineyard of Clos d'Yvigne, recently the subject of Patricia Atkinson's best selling book 'The Ripening Sun'. (Don't miss a tasting of her award winning wines!).

This part of France is a haven for wild birds. We regularly see a wide variety, from great buzzards to golden orioles, and at the right time of year the migration of thousands of storks overhead. Bring your binoculars with you! The fields around the house are full of wild flowers, orchids and butterflies, and, at night, glow-worms.
The area is very popular with cyclists as there are lots of quiet roads. There are also popular 1 to 3 day canoeing trips down the Dordogne with camping provided. Golf at Chateau de Vigiers is only a few miles away and may be followed by an excellent lunch or dinner in their restaurant. Tennis and horse riding are among the many other sports locally available.
