The Aquitaine/Dordogne region
Well renowned for foie gras, Monbazillac wine, delicious locally-made cheeses and fruits and vegetables as wide in variety as one could wish for the south west corner of the Dordogne is rich in gastronomic possibilities. Every day, throughout most of the year, one can find oneself in a bustling market, filled with the treasures of the area, meandering through medieval towns swamped in history, taking in the delights of rural France.
The south-west Dordogne is filled with rolling landscapes and beautiful views at every turn. A little flatter than the centre and east Dordogne the landscapes are wider and less forest dominated but equally beautiful with flowing streams and rivers, sunflower fields filled with colour from June to September and a myriad of wildlife incluing the much-loved hoopoe, jays, buzzards and various other birds of prey.
Begerac, the nearest large town, is a cultured centre of life with superb restaurants and shopping available throughout the old, ancient town centre to the more modern facilities to the east.
The area is home to many chateaus including Bridoire, Monbazillac and Biron all of which have stunning architecture and fascinating history. Further along the Dordogne to the east within an hour's drive you'll find castles, monasteries and chateaus perched high above the river commanding tremendous views of the surrounding forest and countryside.
Le Petit Capelier has information regarding all of the above in the form of a guide and we also provide a dedicated website describing the services and sites we as a family have found most interesting, fun or just simply useful.
