The Brittany / Finistere region
Brittany is a country where the weather is not too hot but in spring, in summer and also in automn there is much sun. For english or Irish people, it's easy to go to Brittany and especially to Finistère by car (you will call at Roscoff harbour) or by airplane (you will land at Brest or Lorient Airports. Please, note that in these places, the owner can accommodate you to rent a car or to go to Benodet with his own car)
Benodet area
BENODET : Bénodet is the microcosm of everything you think about Brittany, it has many contrasts from the pont de Cornouaille that spans the river Odet, with the continual boating ballet being played out beneath its magnificent span, to the bay with its large sweeping beach and corniche. All this makes Benodet seem like an animated postcard that is ever moving with the reflections on the water. Bénodet is also the story of an encounter. A love affair between the sea and the river. Before discovering for yourself the many facets of our town and coming under its spell, we would like to invite you to explore these pages. They will give you an insight into this dream haven for people of all ages. Looking for a seaside holiday or just a place to sit and watch the world go by ? Bénodet could be the place for you..
Bénodet and the sea Bénodet is the embodiment of the sea and the river, its maritime heritage can be found within the harbour where both working and pleasure craft lie side by side at the quay. Join in this rich atmosphere and discover the pleasures of the Thalassotherapy Centre, with its relaxing treatments, or visit the marina to admire the rich variety of activity around this thriving water village. Enjoy the fine safe sandy beaches that abound or sail in the sheltered bay that is a paradise for small craft of all kinds. Alternatively take a cruise to the Glénan islands or up the peaceful river Odet towards Quimper.
Bénodet and its heritage The thousand year-old history of Brittany is reflected in Bénodet and its surroundings. A Brittany full of traditions, with song and dance reflecting the exceptional heritage, that has been fashioned by the interaction of both humans and the sea. Picture postcards views blend in with the rugged Cornouaille landscape, and ancient impassive stones tell their own stories of the history of time far-off legends.
Activities in Bénodet Bénodet has something for everyone, either on the water or land. Water sports with sailing, canoeing, windsurfing and kite surfing, either bring your own or hire from a variety of centres. Land based activities include golf, tennis, hiking, petaneque, cycling or just relaxing watching others be more energetic! Also for the less sporting visitor Bénodet has many cultural features including, a cinema / casino complex, and a library, plus many concerts and exhibitions are held in the town throughout the year.
Bénodet is 15 km from Quimper, the main city of Cornouaille . Quimper is an old city with a beautiful cathedral and old houses in the centre. During summer time there are different festivals. Located by the river Odet, Quimper has always been a sheltered place and a crossing point. As far back as the roman conquest a small urban centre settled round a port opened to the Mediterranean world, downstream from the actual town. Later Breton immigrants chose to settle upstream, on the confluent (Kemper in Breton language). The choice of Quimper as an Episcopal town contributed to its development as it was already the residence of the powerful Count of Cornouaille. Since the 13th Century the building of the cathedral and the belt of walls have structured the town. The construction of the cathedral which lasted many centuries made it one of the major building in gothic art in Brittany. In the 16th century Brittany became part of France with a royal administration which led to the building of private hotels, and in the following century by the construction of many convents related to the catholic reform. Nevertheless the town remained a town of merchants and ship-owners who built timbered- or stoned- houses. Quimper's cathedral : In 1239, Bishop Raynaud started the building of the actual cathedral on the remnants of an ancient roman cathedral. From 1850, an architect from Quimper, Joseph Bigot started to restore the building, mainly by adding new furnitures, decorating the chapels and replacing the windows destroyed under the French Revolution by new stained-glass windows. His most spectacular achievement remains the construction of the two spires from 1854 to 1856, financed by the town’s inhabitants Thanks to recent restoration works of the interior polychromes and ribbed ceilings in yellow and ochre and the white washing of the facings, the cathedral is a true revelation of 15th century architecture. This colourful restoration was totally in the spirit of the first builders, in opposition to the austere look of religious monuments during the 19th century. At Quimper, you will discover : ¤ The original site of Quimper : Locmaria's quarter, the 12th century roman church (one of the oldest building in Finistère) the ancient priory and the medieval garden. ¤The bishop’s town : - The ancient bishop’s palace houses the Breton museum. - The down defences : 40% left of the original walls. - The cobble stoned streets of the Episcopal town with half timbered houses- with each street, a reminder of ancient trades : Rue des boucheries (butcher’s street) place au beurre (butter square), rue Kéréon (shoemaker’s street)... ¤ The Ducal town : - The attractive houses of Place Terre Au Duc St Mathieu street and church with its beautiful stained windows, venelle du poivre (pepper alley), rue René Madec.
