The jewel of the house is its balcony, stretching the length of the house. All those who see the moon rising above the mountains of Epirus, shining over the sea behind the bell tower never forget it.

The house itself is furnished with family pieces, a mixture of Venetian and Greek, with English and Indian additions, bought during their stays there.

The hub of the house is predictably the vast kitchen, where the old bread oven is still used- although now only for storage.

The main 'saloni' has four rooms leading off it- sitting room, formal dining room, library and shower room. From here French windows lead out to the balcony and another door leads onto the stairs to the first floor. There are tables, chairs and couches on the balcony, so that you can live out there should you choose to do so.

Each bedroom has its own individual character, be it Venetian, Greek or British.

The Ionian Islands region

Benitses was a fishing village until the advent of tourism, but it has retained its character, and its reputation as an excellent centre for exploring this beautiful island. A yachting marina and some excellent tavernas have been added to enhance its popularity- indeed Greeks from all over the country come here to eat!. It is also one of Corfu's oldest coastal villages- there are the remains of Roman baths there- and it is on the sheltered east coast, about 12 km south of Corfu Town which makes swimming always enjoyable, there are many coves to explore, and it is possible to find a secluded one even in August.

A ,little further south is Corfu's best kept secret, the Boukari/Petretis peninsula, studded with small fish tavernas along its length, and enjoying spectacular views across to the mainland and up the Corfu channel.

Corfu Town is only 12 kms away, whilst other easily accessible places of interest are

3 km away the Achilleon Palace,in the attractive village of Gastouri,

5 km to Mouse Island

25 km to the golf club

35 km to Paleocastritsa

Even the far north of the island is only just over one hour's drive.

Corfu is the most northerly major Ionian island, a long time favourite with British visitors- one of the earliest of whom was the limerick writer and artist Edward Lear, in the mid 1800s. The Durrell brothers followed almost a century later and tourism really took off in the 1970s.

The island was ruled by Venice for 300 years and the Serenissima's influence is everywhere, but can be seen especially in Corfu Town, which is a World Heritage Site, and reminds the visitor of Venice without the canals. A stroll round here in the evening, followed by dinner at one of the many excellent restaurants is a 'must' during your stay.

The Venetians subsidised the planting of olives so the island is covered with olive groves of great antiquity, the silver green of their leaves broken up by the dark green spires of the cypress trees.

The north of the island is mountainous, the folds in the hills hiding stunningly beautiful villages. Villages were built inland in the hills in the old days to give protection from pirates, and the Turks who occupied the mainland opposite and constantly raided Corfu. The middle of the island is the main agricultural area, Corfu Town is also here, and a famous golf course now sits in the Ropa Valley. The south of the island is the least developed, traditional life still goes on there and you see women coming from the fields on their donkeys, whilst their husbands sit in the cafeneion talking politics!

It is especially green in contrast with the mainland opposite where the combination of goats and wood being chopped down for charcoal or to build ships, means that it is much less forested.
