Home description
Haritzaga is a traditional Landais-style house, just a short drive to the popular beach resorts of Capbreton and the surfing mecca, Hossegor. The village centre of Benesse-Maremne is just a 5 minute walk from the house where you will find, tennis courts, tabac, pharmacy, hairdresser, excellent boulangerie and mini-market. Just 7kms away is St Vincent-de-Tyrosse, ideal for restaurants, bars and shops, it also has a cinema and a weekly market on Fridays.
Its combination of facilities and location has proved very popular for both families and groups of golfers or surfers. The heated private swimming pool is excellent for younger kids, especially outside the main summer weeks. The chalet provides self-contained studio accommodation, ideal for accommodating grandparents, as it gives independence but is very much part of the rental property.

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Landes region
Aquitaine has the longest stretch of coastline in Europe and offers an amazing variety of activities, such as golf, surfing, cycling, sailing, hiking, bird-watching and horse riding, to name but a few. It is also full of culture and history, there are medieval villages and hill-top towns to visit, plus châteaux, museums, markets and regular festivals.
It is home to some of the world's most famous wines and its regional cuisine is noted even in France for its variety. It is also home to the French Basque Country, an ancient land with its own language, culture, sports, festivals and architecture.
Biarritz and St Jean de Luz, both beautiful, sophisticated resorts are 30-45 minutes' drive south. Both provide excellent beaches, cuisine and up-market shopping as well as a good introduction to the Spanish-influenced Pays Basque. If you have time, drop into the regional capital, Bayonne. Famed for its ham and its chocolates, Bayonne was under English rule for 300 years. It is much under-rated and worth a trip to see its cathedral and walk its ancient streets.
Spain is close enough for a day trip - visit beautiful, chic San Sebastian, historic Pamplona or Bilbao's Guggenheim. The Pyrenees are within easy reach for wonderful walking and some of Europe’s most exotic wildlife, including vultures and brown bears. There are over 30 freshwater lakes, for peace and tranquillity too.
The South West coast of France is one of the sunniest locations in Europe but it's rarely as oppressively hot as the Mediterranean coast or Provence. You can expect summer highs of 25-30 degrees Celsius – pleasantly warm rather than hot, although the further inland you go the hotter it generally gets.
Benesse Maremne area
Nearby Hossegor is a fabulous town that has a lot to offer; boutique shopping, great bars and restaurants, world-famous surfing beaches, a lovely golf course ranked in the Top 50 in France and a beautiful lake for safe bathing. Cyclists can enjoy the many safe forest tracks that connect between the towns along the coast and make sure to watch a game of Pelota played at the fronton in Hossegor. A short drive up the road is Seignosse golf course, a real monster ranked in Continental Europe’s Top 50. There are other great courses within 45 minutes drive including Moliets and Biarritz le Phare.
There are many lakes which provide safer bathing for children, apart from the local Lac d'Hossegor, there are others nearby, Blanc Soustons and Léon. From Léon you can canoe from the lake along the serene Courant d'Huchet to the ocean's edge.
Capbreton and neighbouring Hossegor are seaside towns whose populations swell in the high season. The remarkable thing is that both resorts are something of a French (and Spanish) secret; unless you're a dedicated surfer, the chances are you won't have heard of either place.
Capbreton sea-front is a great place for a seaside stroll. The jetty, known locally as l'estacade offers excellent coastal views. There's normally a few locals here trying to catch a fish for supper - there's a fresh fish market as well as many excellent seafood restaurants.
Capbreton & Hossegor regularly hold major surfing competitions; the whole Aquitaine coast is a perfect venue for surfers but at Capbreton the presence of an offshore hollow in the sea-bed gives the waves here that extra edge. The beaches at Capbreton are generally a little less fierce than at Hossegor where the swell can really pick up. This makes Capbreton a good option for family beach holidays.
Cyclists can enjoy the many safe forest tracks that connect between the towns along the coast. Sailing enthusiasts should head for the Capbreton Marina.

Guestbook for Haritzaga
Alan Davis 2008 - returned his holiday questionnaire giving a score of `excellent' for the property, value for money and the destination.
"The ease of access to the motorway meant day trips to Biarritz and Spain plus towns to the north very simple. The bakery in the square in the village made the best bread and croissants we have tasted in France and we have been going for 25 years." -Richard Mathieson 2007
“The location was excellent and the house was ideal – we had a wonderful holiday.” -Felicity Maxwell, 2006
