The Goa/West India region

South Goa is known for its relaxed, laid -back atmosphere where u can shop at the fabulous markets, enjoy an alternative life-style making use of traditional healing and massages or enjoy the golf, deep sea fishing or water sports on offer.

Or you can simply enjoy walking, cycling and swimming beside the 27 kilometres of beautiful golden sandy beaches, stopping off every so often at one of the beach restaurants for a taste of the extensive Asian, Chinese, Goan and sea-food menu. The cost of living in Goa is very inexpensive with a meal costing as little as $2 and alcoholic drinks and beers at a fraction of European prices.

The magnificent scenic beauty and the rich architectural heritage of its temples, churches and old houses have made Goa a favourite with travellers around the world. But then, Goa is much more than just beaches and sea. It has alternative lifestyles and cultures which live side by side in an harmonious environment and are available to sample and enjoy.

Much of the real Goa is in its interiors, both inside its buildings and in the jungles away from the coastal area.

Legends from Hindu mythology credit Lord Parshuram, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu with the creation of Goa.

Over the centuries various dynasties have ruled Goa. Rashtrakutas, Kadambas, Silaharas, Chalukyas, Bahamani Muslims and most famously the Portuguese have been rulers of Goa and evidence of this is all around and in the most unexpected places.

Having been the meeting point of races, religions and cultures of East and West over the centuries, Goa has a multi-hued and distinctive lifestyle quite different from the rest of India. Hindu and Catholic communities make up almost the entire population giving it a cosmopolitan outlook which fits well with holiday maker.

Benaulim

Varca, Cavelossim, and Mabor are the most beautiful beaches south of Benaulim. These beaches are much cleaner and quieter than most of the famous beaches of Goa. There are numerous beach restaurants offering a variety of Goan dishes and seafood at reasonable prices.

If you fancy a change the many rivers are available to be explored using a rice boat or traditional Goan fishing boats where you are fed a 3 course meal on king prawns and sea bass and all the beer you can drink for less than £8.

The cost of living in Goa is a fraction of a normal holiday in Europe and continental food is as widely available as Asian and Chinese due to European influences over the centuries. Fruits and vegetables are very cheap and available all year round as the temperature hovers between 28 -32 degrees Celsius.

These beaches are home to some of the most exclusive and luxurious beach resorts in Goa. Accommodation is also available for budget and economy class travellers though not on the beach itself. Christian, Hindu and Muslim festivals are all celebrated in Goa so there is always a party to go to or a parade to see.

Whether its a trip to the jungle, or the river back waters ,or a visit to the spice farms with elephant transport or up to Anjuna for the live music or vast craft markets Goa has it all and many people come back year after year as a result.

"The apartment was perfect for our needs"

My husband and I had a fabulous holiday in Varca Goa . The apartment was great, home from home ! ! We ate out for all our meals as to do so was really cheap but the kitchen had everything you would need if you wanted to cook. A meal for 2 with drinks was less then £10 and delicious. The security guards were really helpful and organised us a scooter to get about on which cost £3 a day !! It is a bit of a walk to the beach and gets really dark by 6.30. Take a torch !Bikes would be good too. Taxis are readily available and Albert Fernandes is on site, he will take you any where. We had him a couple of times for days out from 8 am till 6 pm. His rate was about £25. The best way to see the area, and Albert is so lovely and helpful.
There are lots of restaurants near the beach but some of our best meals were at the beach shacks whilst watching the sun go down. The sunsets in Goa are amazing. You can walk along the beach to benaulim beach which takes about an hour. We found free wifi there at Rapheals one of the beach shacks on right hand side as you walk off beach. It is more of a permanent structure. As long as you had a drink or meal they would give you the code.
All in all a great place to stay as a base to explore the area. Varca is fairly quiet and less touristy than some places we visited but it suited us very well. There is a great super market called Magison a short walk away that sells most things and an ATM a bit further away. If you need anything just ask a Goan they are SO friendly and lovely. We had a great time and would love to go back again

"feel like home in Goa"

It was a true bless to find this place. The house is great, has everything you need and great comfort. Everything is near by, to go to the beach is a nice walk or you can talk to the owner and he can arrange bike, taxi and everything you need. Amelia the housekeeper is ever so sweet and helpful and Archie is a great host when you arrive, everything simple, easy, hassle free! Definitely recommend, as I had so much peace in India in this place!

"A couldn't have been better"

My wife and I stayed at the apartment for 5 weeks as part of a 10 week trip in India. The apartment has everything you need for an extended stay, and is very comfortable, and with the village of Varca only 5 minutes away, banks, restaurants and supermarkets are to hand.

We got there at the beginning of the season and the beach shacks were starting up - it might be a bit quiet for some but after Northern India it was heaven.

A few minor issues we had on our arrival were dealt with straight away and Archie and Justin couldn't have been more helpful. Amelia (our cleaner) was great in sorting out any local issues we had. We also arranged to use a recommended local driver (Pio) who took us anywhere further than scooter distance, and he was reliable and superb with all the local knowledge (and gossip !!). Most of the journeys were a fixed price so no nasty shocks at the end of the day out.

We hired a scooter for the time we were there (250 rupees a day) as the walk to the beach is a good half an hour. Local restaurants (Glorios, Garden Court and Mike's Place) serve great food and are cheap.

We are looking forward to returning again next year - I can say no more !!

Dear Mike - Thank you very much for your nice review & your kind words. It was a pleasure having you as a Guest & we are looking forward to welcome you again here in Goa. I hope you have a lovely Christmas & a happy 2013. All the best & Kind Regards - Archie, Jane, Justin & Amelia.............;-)

"Home from home"

This apartment really has the wow factor - especially so for India. The furnishing is excellant, we could not have needed any more equipment. Our stay was made extra special by our maid - Amelia - who was more than helpful during our stay.
There is quite a walk to Varca beach but the stroll is very pleasant through the paddy fields or you could hire a bike, as we did. We had a great holiday in Varca and hope to return very soon.

Dear Janette - Thank you very much for your nice review & your kind words. We are looking forward to welcome you again in the coming season. All the best & kind regards - Archie & Jane
