The Goa/West India region

Goa, on the west coast of India, is a delightfully picturesque tropical paradise, with spectacular white sand beaches, exotic flora and fauna, lush green hinterland, gleaming white-washed churches and amiable, easy-going people.

“If one word could be said to encapsulate the essence of Goa, it would have to be the Portuguese sossegado, meaning “laid back”. Goa has retained the relaxed feel that has traditionally set it apart from the rest of the country. Wherever you travel in Goa, vestiges of former Portuguese domination are ubiquitous, creating an ambience that is at once exotic and strangely familiar. This is particularly true of Goan food which, blending the Latin love of meat and fish with India’s predilection for spices, is quite unlike any other regional cuisine in Asia. Equally unique is the prevalence of alcohol.“

Benaulim

“Benaulim stands slap in the middle of the spectacular 25-kilometer pure white sand Colva beach, 7km west of Margao, Goa’s second city. It is still hard to beat as a place to unwind, the seafood is superb, the beach breathtaking. Shelving away almost to Cabo da Rama on the horizon, the beach is lined with Goa’s largest, and most colourfully decorated, fleet of wooden outriggers... Benaulim’s proximity to Margao market, along with the presence of a large Christian fishing community, means its restaurants serve some of the tastiest, competitively priced seafood in Goa.” (Rough Guide)

Zen Gardens is two minutes’ walk from Maria Hall crossroads, where there are fruit and vegetable stalls, a newspapers, pharmacy, bank/ATM, restaurant and bar, wine shop, rickshaw and taxi stands, and regular buses to Margao, Colva and the package tour resorts of Varca, Cavellossim and Mobor; A further five minutes leads to the village centre, where there are travel agents, money exchange, internet cafes, mobile phone shop, supermarket, German bakery, ice-cream parlours, hairdressers and a good choice of restaurants and bars, A further 10 minutes’ walk past the paddy fields leads to the beautiful unspoilt beach with a dozen or so “shacks” providing the best value food and drink in Goa, water sports and dolphins. Cycles, motor bikes and cars can be rented cheaply in the village.

Margao, which is only 10 minutes away by bus (Rs10) or rickshaw/taxi, is Goa’s second city (after Panjim) and provides a taste of the real India, particularly in its fascinating covered market. Colva, south Goa’s largest resort, is 10 minutes away by bus or rickshaw, or a pleasant 40 minute walk along the beach or through the lanes

South Goa is a beautiful, peaceful area (in contrast to the busy and more developed tourist areas in the North), with wild life sanctuaries, isolated beaches, temples, old Portuguese mansions, waterfalls, spice plantations and boat trips all easily reached by taxi or your own transport.

Panjim, the capital of Goa, which has excellent shopping and restaurants, and the World Heritage site of Old Goa, are an hour away. Benaulim is 30 minutes from the airport.

"INDULGENT LUXURY!!"

Thank you Archie + Jane
The Zen garden apartment we hired from you 17th Nov to 3rd Dec was without a doubt fantastic! It has all the mod/cons of home including a water purifier water in India straight from the tap! Thanks to Pete and his wife for anything or info we needed and i hope he didnt eat the cheese i "smuggled into India" for you!! The sea was warm, salty and great,so was COCO's bar, and all the little shops on the beach road,a big shout to the fruit stall @ the Marie Hall junction for giving us "special price"on all the kg's of fruit each day, And another shout to the white tourist taxis who took us on a few mini tours before the coach party's arrived so we got 1 on 1 tours and a bit more attn than the masse's got,and for less than Rp 1500 = £17 for most of the day!! Thanks again Archie + jane will will defo becoming back.

Extremely pleased to hear that you had a great time in the apartment while enjoying all the special things Goa has to offer. Your appreciation of the hard work involved in ensuring a good holiday in a challenging infrastructure encourages us and our staff and gives us confidence in the future. Thanks again for the cheese you have no idea how enjoyable it was after4 months away from home. Looking forward to seeing you again and spread the word - Goa is a great place to spend away from the winter beside the warm and balmy Arabian sea.
