The Goa region
Goa is India's smallest state in terms of area and the fourth smallest in terms of population. Located on the west coast of India in the region known as the Konkan, it is bounded by the state of Maharashtra to the north, and by Karnataka to the east and south, while the Arabian Sea forms its western coast.
Panaji (Panjim) the state's capital, Vasco da Gama (Vasco) the largest city, while the historic city of Margao still exhibits the influence of Portuguese culture. Portuguese merchants first landed in Goa in the 15th century, and annexed it soon after. The Portuguese colony existed for about 450 years (one of the longest held colonial possessions in the world), until it was taken over by India in 1961.
Renowned for its beaches, Goa is visited by hundreds of thousands of international and domestic tourists each year. Goa is also known for its temples and world heritage architecture including the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa, which makes it one of the biggest Christian pilgrimage sites in Asia.
Benaulim / Benaulim Beach area
Benaulim also known as Banavali, is a town in South Goa district in the state of Goa, India. It is a beach town a little south of Margao in Goa, India.
It is a town of immense natural beauty, located along the scenic south goa coastline. Legend has it that Lord Parashurama, incarnation of Lord Vishnu, shot an arrow from the Sahyadri mountains in adjacent konkan; the arrow (Baan in Sanskrit) landed at the site of this present-day town. The village also host a special significance for Christians as it is the birthplace of Father Joseph Vaz.
Benaulim village and its beach are the best of Goa as it is today; still less developed and relatively quiet in comparison to the north Goa beaches, it strikes a good balance between the party animal overcrowding or rampant package tourism of Candolim and Anjuna, and the almost deserted beaches at Varca and Agonda.
Night life is similarly laid back, with only a couple of relatively packed and noisy places close to the beach. There's little or none of the techno party frenzy for which North Goa is famous for. It is the perfect place for families or couples to just getaway and relax, relax, relax.
