Just a short 15 mins drive inland away from the hustle and bustle of the Costa Del Sol, and 25 mins from historic Malaga city, lies the sleepy, untouched hamlet of Benaque where the road ends. Set in a picturesque valley amongst olive, almond and mango trees, ‘La Forastera’ is a lovingly renovated traditional rural house located on the dramatic ridge of a hill on the outskirts of the hamlet, and is the perfect place for a relaxing, authentic Spanish holiday surrounded by stunning countryside.

The house has beautiful uninterrupted views of the sea in the distance in front and of a dramatic uninhabited valley behind. The property has a very light and warm natural feel with terracotta tiles, exposed stone walls, traditional oiled wooden doors and shutters and hand made decorative tiles used tastefully throughout. Two private terraces and a garden provide ample opportunity to enjoy the sun and views, or go inside to the open plan living/dining room and relax in front of the wood burning fire on a chilly winter evening.

Located only 1.5 km from picturesque and historically important Macharaviaya, the mountainous terrain on the doorstep is ideal and popular with both walkers and mountain bikers. Over the summer months the nearby tranquil outdoor communal swimming pool opens and costs just 1 euro for a full day. The nearest beach, Benajarafe is only 15 mins away and is very quiet with many beach restaurants serving delicious authentic Spanish food.

The Andalucia region

Benaque is located 240 metres above sea level in the region of Axarquia, a largely undiscovered area of Malaga province. Known for the best climate in Europe, it has sub tropical temperatures similar to southern California. The valley itself is famous for it's production of muscatel grapes which are used to make 'Malaga Wine'. Olive, Almond and Mango trees are also grown and harvested here and throughout the region.

The historic city of Malaga is the capital of the province and is just a 25 min drive away. It has numerous places of interest for the visitor including the moorish Alcazaba castle, bullring, Picasso Museum, impressive Cathedral and historic centre. The world famous Semana Santa processions take place during Easter week whilst the massive fiesta de Malaga takes over the city for a whole week in August.

Benaque

With its mountainous terrain and unrestricted tracks free of traffic, the valley is popular with both hikers and mountain bikers and those seeking tranquility.

Benaque was the birthplace of the poet, novelist and dramatist Salvador Rueda (1857-1933) whose work greatly featured Andalucian themes and to whom a small museum is dedicated in the village.

Just 1.5 km away, Macharaviaya is a historically important and picturesque village. Its impressive church houses the remains of the politically influencial Galvez family of the 1700's who made Macharaviaya well-known far beyond its regional borders. Nowadays, it's population is merely a few hundred. The historical center of the village has a preservation order on it. Some Spanish and foreign artists, ceramicists, painters and writers live among the villagers.

Every year in August, Macharaviaya hosts a festival honoring the patron saint of the village, Bernardo, when a giant paella is cooked on an open fire that feeds hundreds and flamenco music is played late into the night.

A giant paella is also cooked at Benaque's festival which is on the first weekend of September and an open air stage and bar provide night long local entertainment.

Benaque has just one bar that basically serves drinks, but you can also have a meal prepared if you ask for it in advance. It also has a pharmacy. Fresh bread is delivered everyday by the local 'panadero', around 1.30pm, Spanish lunch time. 'La goyi' comes by in her van twice a week selling very basic groceries. There is also a fish van twice a week.

The Costa del Sol enjoys wide sandy beaches and just 15 mins away is the coastal resort of Rincón de la Victoria with the nearest main shops and supermarkets. There are many bars and restaurants and on summer evenings the promenade is aligned with colourful stalls selling jewellery, scarfs, watches and artefacts from all over the world.

A large water park (aquavelis) is a 20 min drive away at Torre del Mar.

The only cave of sea origin known in Europe (Cueva del Tesoro) is to be found 15 min away in Rincon de la Victoria whilst the internationally renowned dramatic Nerja caves (Cueva de Nerja) are just 30 min East and well worth a day out.

The nearest golf course, Añoreta Golf, is just 10 min away and all courses can be booked prior to arrival if required.
