Home description

This beautiful Villa 45 minutes from Jerez airport, built over 3 floors, with terrace gardens and pool, nestles within the village of Benamahoma which belongs to the Pueblos Blancos (White Villages) in the Sierra de Grazelema Natural Park (Cadiz). If you are looking for the real Spain, away from other tourists, with all of the comforts of home 66 Royale Street (the actual address of the house) provides.

With 4 double bedrooms, one single bedroom, and a sofa bed in the living room on the garden floor, the house comfortably sleeps 11. There is one bathroom on the top floor with a Grohe shower and WC. The second floor (entrance to street with kitchen, large living and dining area) has a toilet and wash basin, and on the garden floor there is a shower room which also contains the washing machine and dryer. On the same floor a 37" flat screen TV, surround sound stereo, and DVD player provide a comfortable indoor family area.

Whether you enjoy golfing (25 minutes drive to the internationally acclaimed Arcos Gardens golf course), bird watching, walking, rock climbing, paragliding, canoeing, hiking, touring historic villages and cities (Seville, Cadiz and Jerez de la Frontera are within easy driving distance) or venturing further afield (Granada and Cordoba make full day trips), or relaxing by the pool, this house and village can provide it all.

The Costa de la Luz / Cadiz Province region

Apart from its protected nature reserves, Cadiz has a vast inland area in the east of the province that is made up of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park and the Alcornocales Natural Park.

A Unesco biosphere reserve, the dramatically rugged limestone massif of the Sierra de Grazalema is one of Andalucia's most visited natural parks and popular with those interested in hiking, mountaineering, potholing and rock climbing.

Grazalema is the gateway to the park and is just one of the pretty pueblos blancos scattered about the sierra, like El Bosque and Zahara de la Sierra, which overlooks a reservoir.

The inland pueblos blancos (white towns) are well known for their unique beauty and spectacular settings - invariably hilltop locations, with the whitewashed houses huddled around a ruined castle.

Although the most famous of the white towns is Ronda, in Malaga province, Cadiz province can claim many for its own. Often the names of these pueblos blancos in Cadiz are testament to the towns´ significant past as settlements built to defend the respective territories of the Christians and the Muslims; the frequently seen suffix "de la frontera" of a white town place name refers to its historical border position.

Some of the most striking white villages are Arcos de la Frontera, in an unbeatable position atop an elongated limestone cliff and the exceptional Moorish delights of Vejer de la Frontera.

Benamahoma / Grazelema area

The village has all the necessary amenities, including bank, superettes, pharmacy, as well as bars and restaurants serving delicious Andalucian cuisine. The perfect antidote to busy city life, Benemahoma is the real rural Spain. Only Spanish is spoken in the village, with very few foreign visitors ever finding their way to this small paradise.

With a population of just 500, numbers swell during the first weekend in August to 2,000 during the Fiesta de Benamahoma. This Fiesta commemorates the victorious Christians’ ousting of the Moors from Spain. In Benemahoma you will find friendly, helpful locals greeting you as you walk its cobblestoned, winding streets. Hiking, kayaking, paragliding, bungee jumping - see http://www.horizonaventura.com/grazalema

Benamahoma is popular with people from Seville, as it is located in the middle of a natural park, for weekend breaks and walking holidays.

How to get there

We have found the best airline to be Ryanair from Stansted Airport into Jerez de la Frontera www.ryanair.com.

There are generally two flights a day using their schedule as at 21 August '07 - one early morning flight and one just before 5pm in the evening. Flying time is 2.5 hours.

Flight prices have varied from £45 round trip to just over £120 round trip - depending on advance booking and time of year.

Other airlines are Click Air into Seville (one flight a day from Gatwick although we have not used this service to date), Iberia, Air France and Air Berlin although we have never had to use these airlines. We have used a variety of rental car agencies in both Jerez and Seville - there is a good selection at both airports.

Driving from Jerez airport has become very easy over the past year as new highways and roads from the airport on the A382 to Arcos, bypassing the town, and then heading on to the A372 towards El Bosque and up the hill to Benamahoma. The RAC has an excellent route map, however it has not been updated to reflect the new road changes which reduce the journey time from 1 hour 10 minutes to about 45-50 minutes www.rac.co.uk.

Also driving down from Seville is very easy and once again the RAC route planner - Seville Airport to Benamahoma has a map and excellent instructions - ww.rac.co.uk

Guestbook for Villa near Jerez de la Fronter

“Thanks again Erin for letting us stay at your beautiful house for our Easter holiday. We just loved the house with its breathtaking views and found it to be an ideal base to visit one of the most stunningly beautiful areas of Spain. The people in this charming village could not have been more friendly and welcoming. Our children enjoyed playing by the pool, picking up delicious oranges and pink grapefruits from the garden, not to mention the lovely tapas, walks and picnics in the mountains. Overall a wonderful and relaxing experience which we would highly recommend to anyone wishing to discover a very special place”. April 2009
