About this location
The Andalucia region
The Costa del Sol, now appropriately renamed Costa del Golf after it's well over 40 beautifully situated golfcourses is one of Europe's most famous playgrounds. The Mediterranean Sea in front, the Andalucian landscape around, the warm sunshine over 320 days a year and average temperatures over 20°C, the impressive cultural heritage of cities and towns like Gránada, Sevilla, Córdoba, Ronda and Antequera within a few hours' drive, and the wintersports resort of the Sierra Nevada at just 125 kms distance truly make it a ´year round resort´ area.
The city of Málaga with it's international airport and daily airservices to most major European cities is only 20 minutes by car. In Benalmádena-Costa, the large marina with moorish-style architecture is a major watersports centre of the Spanish southcoast. The autopista (motorway) connecting the coast with northern Europe via Madrid or Alicante runs at just 3 kms from the house. There is a local trainservice and busservice directly into Malaga. Marbella and the famous Puerto Banús are only 50 kilometers away.
Benalmádena is a municipality of the province of Málaga consisting of three main urban areas; Benalmádena-Pueblo, Benalmádena-Costa and Arroyo de la Miel. The city of Málaga is about 20 km to the east with Marbella 50 km to the west. The area has grown rapidly in recent decades due to tourism and has become one of the Costa del Sol's prime locations.
Benalmádena-Costa is home to the majority of the areas attractions, the foremost of which is probably the golden sandy beaches, which run off into the Mediterranean Sea. There are restaurants and bars to suit all types and tastes and the area retains a relaxed friendly atmosphere all year round.
With such a wide and varied array of activities and things to do any visitor will be hard pressed to find a moment of boredom when visiting Benalmádena, a town which is truly more then just a resort.
A promenade stretches along the coast to the Puerto Marina, which boasts excellent shopping and dining. The marina is also home to The Sea Life Centre, home to all manners of marine wild life, and has its own petting tank where you can get personal with the Rays. You can take a stroll around to look at the luxury yachts and when the sun goes down the Puerto Marina becomes one of the coasts best party destinations.
Parque La Paloma is a gorgeous location in the center of Benalmádena-Costa. There is a stunning array of flora and fauna, plus a menagerie of animals including hens, rabbits, goats and exotic birds. The park is beautifully landscaped with themed gardens and rocky waterfalls, which run down to the lake. There are two bars within the park where you can relax into the evening listening to the calls of peacocks.
Beside La Paloma park you will find Selwo Marina, the sister to Selwo Adventure Park, further down the coast. Modeled around different locations in South America, you can view close up dolphins, sea lions, crocodiles, exotic birds and snakes. Recently a penguin habitation has been installed giving a glimpse of the Antarctic in Andalucia.
Arroyo de la Miel translates to 'Honey Stream' is a former sleepy village, which now links Benalmádena-Pueblo to its Costa. Being at the centre of things it has grown into a fantastic area for getting a bite to eat and shopping to your hearts content. The train station is found in Arroyo, which links the town all along the coast from Málaga to Fuengirola.
Cable cars serve as a route to the top of the mountain that pins Benalmádena to the beaches where you can enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view inland and out to sea where North Africa is visible on clear days. You can also take in equestrian and raptor shows at the summit.
Opposite the cable car station you will find Tivoli World a theme park of many diversions. Aside from its multitude of rides and games there are bars and restaurants aplenty so there is always something to do if you don't like the look of the log flume or go-karts.
Benalmádena-Pueblo is the original village, set back from the coast on the foot of Mount Calamorro at around 200 meters in elevation. The heart of the village has a traditional Spanish appearance with white-washed stone buildings and labyrinth alleys, however the village now has a much more cosmopolitan feel. Visitors to the Benalmádena-Pueblo can enjoy fine dining in picturesque squares and awe-inspiring views of the coast and across the sea.
Mijas-Pueblo is a few minutes away from Benalmádena-Pueblo where a slice of rustic Spain is served up with shows and donkey trekking. Other nearby attractions include Colomares Castle, a take on various significant monuments from across the globe, built in the late 20th century it was erected to commemorate Christoper Colombus' discovery of the New World, as such it is the largest monument in the world to commemorate the event.
Cultural attraction is the Buddhist Enlightenment Stupa which finds its residence in Benalmadena Pueblo; it is the largest Stupa in the Western world standing 33 metres tall and is a point of interest for Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike.
Benalmádena has a number of golf courses, putting greens and driving ranges. in the near vicinity. Benalmádena Golf is home to a driving range, putting green and a straight forward 9 hole par three. It has an excellent club house with restaurant and the addition of a bowls green. Golf Bil Bil although amidst an urban area some of the views on offer are spectacular and again nice clubhouse with lively bar and restaurant.
The beautiful 18 hole course of Golf Torrequebrada offers a challenge to all levels of player.
Benalmádena's cuisine is wide and varied with restaurants offering cuisine typical of the area, with lots of seafood and rice on the menu, to anything and everything you could possibly wish for. There are a great number of tapas bars, restaurants and cáfes in Benalmádena. Some more traditional bars will often give you a small amount of tapas for free with a caña (small beer). Benalmádena Costa's situation by the seaside affords it the pleasure of being home to Chiringuitos (beach bars) where you can watch the fishing boats, which have often caught what you are eating.
