The Andalucia region
Spain's `sunshine coast' is one of Europe's favourite holiday destinations. With an average of 320 days of blue sky annually, it is perfect as a summer holiday or as a winter destination for golfers, walkers and those wishing to pursue out -door activities.
Families are particularly well catered for, with myriad attractions, restaurants and of course miles of beaches. Children are not just tolerated but welcomed by the friendly Spanish people.
The winding coastline has a number of beaches to suit visitors of all types with water sports or a quiet cove to sunbathe as you prefer, and just inland are the quaint whitewashed villages known as the " Pueblos Blancos", perfect for a day out. Or venture further afield to the fabulous Moorish Palace of the Alhambra or the iconic Mesquita of Cordoba.
Despite the march of development, the area still has the ambience of Andalucía, the most `Spanish' of all regions and you do not have to venture far from your holiday home to encounter local ferias, fiestas and romerias - the scent of Jasmine is in the air, Spanish wine is flowing freely- come and enjoy!
Benalmadena´s Puerto Marina is rated amongst the best in the world, and has been awarded 'Best Marina in the World' award several times. Puerto Marina is one of the Costa del Sol's most popular attractions with it´s spectacular architecture and attractive environment.
There are activities for families during the day. There is a little tourist "train" popular with families, to visit the various locations and also a childrens playpark and coffee bar to the rear of the apartment.
By day you can visit the Aquarium, hire a boat, partake of numerous water sports, including; sailing, scuba diving, kayaking, water skiing. The Marina's Centro Náutico provides a place in the Marina where sailing enthusiasts can meet up at sporting events and also to meet socially. There is an excellent sailing school on site. The centre has a fine restaurant and shops selling sailing equipment.
The Marina has a beautiful beach area with beach beds and parasols for hire. Since 1987 it has continually been awarded the European Blue Flag for its excellent service and clean waters. This area has an average annual temperature of 22º and around 320 days of sunshine and is also a great winter break destination.
Alternatively take a stroll through the port, with its great range of artisan shops, For those who want to try out the Spanish 'tapas' there are many little terrace bars choose from, where you can sample many types of fish and other delicacies, while soaking up the atmosphere of the port and looking out over the Mediterranean or at the fabulous selection of boats in the harbour.
In the evening enjoy a great choice of dining options, many with great views over the marina.Or simply watch the sun going down over the Mediterranean with a glass of wine. For those seeking nightlife, the lively atmosphere carries on until late, in it´s many sophisticated bars and clubs.
A favourite attraction at the marina is the Mississippi Willow, a beautifully restored American paddle steamer. It is now a floating bar and restaurant. A lovely way to see the port is hop on the Mississippi for an afternoon cruise around the bay, or wait until later in the evening when it livens up for party time.
There are a number of yachts and catamarans offering short outings for families, fun cruises for young people and also day and fishing charters. See the coast from a different perspective. You may even see dolphins even on a short trip. I personally recommend the sunset cruises.
Benalmadena has Tivoli World theme park, largest on the Costa del Sol. Check opening times as it is only open in the evening in the heat of the summer. The setting is a wonderful combination of tropical gardens, beautiful plazas, luminous fountains, exiting fair ground rides, theatres, restaurants and much more. There are over 300 rides and attractions. Some of the best Flamenco shows are held here and many important musical artists appear in concert every season. The fabulous outdoor theatre can seat up to 3,000 people and the atmosphere is often electric. For variety and as a contrast to the Spanish Flamenco theatre, there is also a fabulous Far West corner, where you enter the world of the cowboy can even find out your skills as a bucking bronco rider! Tivoliandia is a new section, which has recently been added to the Park, offering 11 rides for the youngest members of the family. So, from small children to grandparents, Tivoli World has something for everyone.
Nearby is also the cable car. At the summit,800 metres you can take a donkey ride through the beautiful natural surroundings. The donkeys are ready and waiting for cable car passengers. As well as a donkey ride, included in the price you can also see a demonstration on how the birds of prey live alongside humans and watch the speed and feeding habits of a peregrine falcon or the majestic flight of the eagle. So successful is the bird of prey sanctuary on the Calamorro Mountaintop that four rare Royal Owl chicks were successfully bred there recently, news that hit the local papers. There are more than sixty birds of different species, including vultures, royal eagles, peregrine falcons and white-headed vultures as well as the Royal Owls. All of this makes the cable car ride exciting, educational and enjoyable for the whole family. There are often astronomy meetings held during the summer.
The old village of Benalmadena Pueblo is well worth a vist. The village is 280 meters above sea level and set into the hillside a few kilometers from the coast. It is a delight to wander through the narrow, whitewashed cobbled streets and enjoy the display of coloured Andalucian geraniums spilling out of endless plant pots on little window sills. There are spectacular views of the Mediterranean coast from most of the streets and a lovely church and park which meanders down the hillside.
The village also has a museum of Latin American pre - columbian artifacts.
