The Costa del Sol/Malaga region
The Costa del Sol is a region in the south of Spain, in Andalusia, comprising the coastal towns and communities along the Mediterranean coastline of the provinces of Málaga and Cádiz. Formerly made up only of a series of small, quiet fishing settlements, the region west of Málaga has been transformed into a popular tourist destination of world renown. It includes the city of Málaga, and the towns of Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Mijas, Marbella and Puerto Banús which are also the wealthiest towns, San Pedro de Alcántara, Estepona, San Luis de Sabinillas, the community of Sotogrande, San Roque and La Línea de la Concepción.
The east or Málaga, however, has retained much of its Spanish way of life and culture and is popular among people who prefer a quieter holiday surrounding. Historically its population lived in the fishing villages, and in the "white" pretty villages a little distance inland, in the mountains running down to the coast. Towns such as Vélez-Málaga, Torre del Mar, Rincón de la Victoria, Torrox and Nerja are among the most popular. The views around this area are still mostly unspolied and full of beauty.
The coastline to the east of Málaga consists of a series of large beaches, a few coves hidden amongst cliffs, leisure marinas and fishing ports. It is protected from north winds by high mountain ranges and has a mild climate with sea breezes and short rainfall. The weather allows sub-tropical vegetation to grow and flourish with many different types of palm trees, cypresses, and other very colourful plants. Oranges, avocados and olives grow in abundance and many town and village streets are lined with fruit bearing orange trees.
The Costa del Sol in general is highly acclaimed for its way of life, with plenty of small bars to relax in, delicious food, warm and welcoming people and many ferias to enjoy.
Benajarafe area
Benajarafe is a coastal village, located 18 kilometres to the east of Malaga, between Rincon de la Victoria and Torre del Mar, in the region of Axarquia. It has traditionally been a fishing village (which is now Benajarafe Costa) but also a farming town in the hills (Benajarafe Alto). Nowadays, it is growing more and more to provide housing and services to all the tourists and immigrants that arrive to the area seduced by its great location and extended beach. It's population is approximately 3,000.
Benajarafe is a popular summer destination due to it's wide sandy beaches and safe clean bathing, ideal for families. The weather in this area is excellent all year round: mild winters, short rainy season, and pleasantly hot summers. There are a variety of bars, cafeterias and restaurants on the beach (called "Chiringuitos") serving, among other Spanish traditional dishes, fresh fish specialities: grilled sardines being the most popular!
Over the last few years, the village has had an important amount of investment in its infrastructure to build the Beach Promenade lined by gardens and palm trees and the restoration of the old train station. The most important buildings in Benajarafe are: The old watch tower (Torre Moya), unique in Spain due to its semi-circular base, and The Virgen del Carmen’s Church.
A wide variety of amenities and activities are within easy reach in the surrounding area: Golf (Two 18-hole courses are located within 15 mins drive), sailing, jet skiing, fishing, Aqua Park, Go-karting, cinemas, horse riding, trekking in the hills, shopping centres and Street Markets to find local produce and crafts or perhaps a good bargain! The beautiful Lake Viñuela is just 15 minutes drive ahead of Vélez-Málaga, our bigger town around. It is a really pleasant experience to discover the many inland villages with their mixture of Moorish and Andalusian charming styles.
Málaga is 20 minutes drive to the west. The Alcazaba, The Gibralfaro Castle, the Malagueta Bull ring, the Picasso Museum and the Cathedral are well worth a visit. Great night life in Benalmádena and Torremolinos is just 40 mins. away, but local bars and clubs, often open till the early hours, will cater for those of you who love staying out.
Our local Fiesta is in August, but Benajarafe is ideally located to easily enjoy one-day trips to Granada and Sierra Nevada, Marbella, Ronda, Gibraltar, Antequera, Nerja, Almuñecar, the Axarquía and many more. The local area provides a wide opportunity to enjoy different religious, cultural and social events and traditions throughout the year: typical Spanish fiestas, Easter, Christmas, Gastronomic celebrations, to mention just a few. Celebrating in Spanish style is a must!
