The Isle of Wight region

Located off the Southern English Coast, the Isle of Wight is a beautiful and diverse island. With 3 car ferry and two high speed passenger ferry routes which link directly with rail, coach and road it is very easy to access and although less than 3 hours from London it feels as though it is a thousand miles.
Known for its wonderful scenery (half of the Island has been designated as an Area of Outstanding Beauty), the Isle of Wight first became a popular holiday destination in Victorian times and remains so to this day. It is easy to see why this Island is popular, with its stunning coast line, golden sandy beaches and pretty villages, the Island can either be the perfect retreat to get away from it all or you can enjoy an altogether more energetic experience.
The island has over 500 miles of carefully maintained footpaths which makes it ideal for walkers or cyclists. There is an excellent range of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants located across the Island and it boasts a wide range of activities: sporting, entertainment and cultural which would appeal to all ages.
The Bembridge area
Bembridge is a small coastal village that is located on the eastern tip of the Isle of Wight. The harbour boasts an array of unusual and distinct house boats and the village centre offers shops and services. Bembridge is home to the Isle of Wights only Windmill which has recently been restored by the National Trust.
Bembridge is a very family-friendly village offering good amentities and sailing opportunities. It has a quiet, clean beach and riding stables offering beach rides. It is a short drive away from the larger seaside town of Ryde offering larger, more varied shops, cinema, ice skating and bowling. A little further a field is the island's largest town of Newport. boasting the Quay Arts Centre and weekly farmers market.
Bembridge Harbour until the late 19th Century extended to Brading and was known as Brading Haven, in fact, Bembridge was originally an island. The sea extended from Yaverland in the south through to St. Helens in the north. Bembridge was a sleepy fishing village, also quite a renowned smuggling place.
After construction of the embankment, bringing trains to Bembridge, the village grew to become a popular Victorian sea side resort. Steamers at that time came into the Point and visitors stayed either at one of two very grand hotels which are now private homes.
Both Bembridge and St. Helens hosts, sports days, regattas, carnivals and many more local events, flower shows, etc., the major ones are listed in the Island Diary, for other local events see the calendar on www.bembridge.com
Bembridge Harbour is a very popular sailing venue and has two Sailing Clubs with both dinghy and keel boat racing throughout the summer. There is now a lot of winter racing in 'Illusions' (one man keel boats) and scows. During the summer months many visiting yachts come into Bembridge Harbour for weekend visits and rallies.
