The Isle of Wight region

Located off the Southern English Coast, this Isle of Wight is a stunning and diverse destination. With 350 ferry crossings a day and routes that link directly with rail, coach and road it couldn’t be easier to get to, take your own car across to the Island or catch the swift passenger ferry and make use of the Isle of Wight’s excellent transport system that has been specifically designed with the holidaymaker in mind.

Known for its breathtaking scenery (half of the Island has been designated as an Area of Outstanding Beauty), the Isle of Wight first became a popular holiday destination in Victorian times and remains so to this day. It is easy to see why this Island is popular, with its stunning coast line, golden sandy beaches and pretty villages, the Island can either be the perfect retreat to get away from it all or you can enjoy an altogether more energetic experience.

The island has over 500 miles of carefully maintained footpaths which makes it ideal for walkers or cyclists. There is an excellent and diverse range of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants located across the Island and you can even hire bikes and follow a designated pub walk.

Bembridge area

Bembridge is a small coastal village that is located on the eastern tip of the Isle of Wight. The harbour boasts an array of unusual and distinct house boats and the village centre offers a fantastic array of shops and services. Bembridge is home to the Isle of Wights only Windmill which has recently been restored by the National Trust.

Bembridge Harbour until the late 19th Century extended to Brading and was known as Brading Haven, indeed, Bembridge was originally an island. The sea extended from Yaverland in the south through to St. Helens in the north. Bembridge was a sleepy fishing village, also quite a renowned smuggling place.

After construction of the embankment, bringing trains to Bembridge, the village grew to become a popular Victorian sea side resort. Steamers at that time came into the Point and visitors stayed either at the Spithead Hotel or Old Bembridge Hotel. (Solent Landing has subsequently been built on the site of the original Spithead Hotel and Old Bembridge Hotel has been converted into flats and houses. Wight Holiday Homes have holiday homes in both developments.)

Both Bembridge and St. Helens hosts, sports days, regattas, carnivals and many more local events, flower shows, etc., the major ones are listed in the Island Diary, for other local events see the calendar on www.bembridge.com

Bembridge Harbour is a very popular sailing venue and boasts two popular Sailing Clubs with both dinghy and keel boat racing throughout the summer. Indeed there is now a lot of winter racing in 'Illusions' (one man keel boats) and scows. During the summer months many visiting yachts come into Bembridge Harbour for weekend visits and rallies.
