We have spent many hours sitting in the garden with a glass of wine looking across the valley. When the sun sets behind the mountain opposite the landscape changes to a wonderful pink colour for a while.
On road parking is available opposite the house.

The Languedoc-Roussillon region
With 300 days of sunshine, the Languedoc-Rousillon offers a year round opportunity to experience the surrounding scenery with its stunning gorges, lakes and vineyards.
The department of Aude boasts a rich historical heritage, with the stunning Cathar castles on many of the hilltops, the mystery of Rennes-les-Chateau and the magnificent medieval city of Carcassonne.
The area is ideal for outdoor pursuits including walking, water sports (white water rafting, turbo boarding, kayaking, canooing within village), cycling (Tour de France often goes through village), fishing, climbing, caving etc. plus skiing in the winter season.
Other places of interest include:
Thermal springs at Rennes-les-Bains & Alet-les-Bain
Thermal pool at Rennes - les- Bain - open all year round.
Perpignan - gateway to Spain, full of history and wonderful for shopping in the old and the new quarters.
Mirepoix - wonderful medievel town with famous market square - the entire perimeter is rimmed by old beams and wooden heads. Each carving is individual.
Gorge de Galamus - amazing limestone gorge worn through the ridge by the river Agly.
Mediterrenean beaches just over 1 hour away. Miles of safe sandy beaches.
Sentier Cathar (walking route through the Pyrenees)
The famous Little Yellow Train - take the open air train through the Fenouillede mountain range or the Tet valley.
Belvianes et Cavirac
Belvianes et Cavirac is a small village (approx 300 people) nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees at the entrance to the Gorges Pierre Lys.
Excellent local restaurant, just five minutes walk away, offering regional food and wine. Another restaurant has recently opened and is only a few minutes walk from the house
Quillan, the local market town (3km away) offers all amenities including outdoor swimming pool, shops, restaurants, boulangerie, boucherie etc. During the summer months there is a weekly night market (Thursday) with live entertainment).
Open air swimming pool at Axat - with water slide (10mins) - stunning scenery all around. Lie on the grass under a tree whilst the children swim in the pool.
Lake at Puivert 10km - spend the day by the sandy beach of this fresh water lake. There is a small cafe/restaurant and again the scenery is beautiful.

"A good base for exploring The Cathar region."
We had a great time in The Languedoc using Les Volets as our base. Fabulous weather meant lots of time spent out on the patio in the evenings. The layout of the property is unusual and the spiral staircase is as described in the property details. It's a nice house, but if you are used to having plenty of space you could find it a bit restrictive. Easy access from the airport at Carcassonne and well placed for the Cathar Castles. Plenty of walking in the area too. The local wines really are fantastic, whether it's the reds of Corbieres, Minervois and Fitou, or the sparkling whites of Limoux.

"Great value for money"
Great little house in brilliant location for Pyrenees (close to skiing resorts); Carcasonne (and lots of amazing Cathar chateaus) scattered around), Perpignan, Foix, Mirepoix (fantastic medieval town), Alet les Bains (beautiful) and other gorgeous French locations. Go on the Rouge and Jaune trains, you won't be disappointed, stunning scenery. Good open air pools short drive away and lake swimming (Puivert) within forty mins. Andorra hour and a half (didn't make that trip, but next time!) Gite well equipped, homely and has terrace with lovely views. Too hot to use during day, but lovely in the evenings. Dock with iPod shuffle complete with great music much appreciated! Owner Shelley really helpful and organised beach towels for us, saving our precious Ryanair luggage allowance. English friend of owner available if we had any problems. As stated, this gite is really good value for money, many of the gites we looked at were a lot more. Having two shower rooms was essential for us and not often found in French properties at that price. Recommend you book up!

"Perfect ... would recommend to all our friends"
The house was in a perfect location to visit the Pyrenees to the south, the beaches to the east and the vineyards to the north. The description on the website was completely accurate and there was everything in the house which you would need for an excellent holiday. I would point out that due to the stairs in the house this is not recommended for less mobile or children but otherwise I really cannot fault it and we looked forward to coming 'home' every evening. Thanks to Shelley and her neighbours who provided the fantastic welcome package for a great holiday.

My husband and I travelled to les volets with our two children aged 9 and 12 in October half term. We all had a very restful and enjoyable holiday. The owner was extremely helpful with giving us information about the local area and the accommodation itself. We flew to Carcassonne airport and hired a car. The drive to the house took about 50 minutes and the scenery on the way was beautiful. The house was set in a great location with views of the mountains and it was fully equipped with everything including a very useful slow cooker. There were plenty of towels and blankets and the beds were very comfortable especially after a long day exploring. We visited many different places including Carcassonne a medieval walled city, les Angles which is a ski resort and there was snow which the children were very pleased about, a stunning drive down through the vineyards to the beach which was about an hour away and it was very warm for the end of October! We all went into the sea!! If you are looking for a complete getaway with amazing views, comfortable accommodation and optional excursions then we would definitely recommend les Volets.

"beautiful scenery,quiet location,friendly atmoshere."
It is not suitable for anyone with a mobility disability, would definately recommend car hire as the location is rural. The roads are not too busy,so even if like me you have not driven abroad before, dont be afraid to try.The property is clean and very comfortable and the views reminded me of the Lake District.

"Beautiful views, friendly neighbourhood and well a equipped gite"
I loved the Gite, it was extremely well equipped and in a great location. The surrounding views were magical and moving. eating my breakfast every morning watching the mist slowly roll over the mountain peaks is something I will never forget. It is definitely great value for money and I am planning to return. We also were unfortunate to have had an injury in our party that resulted in a hospital stay, and one of the great things about the Gite was the help we received in our crisis from the (French speaking) English couple who live next door and who are friends of the Gite owners but are right there to help if anything should go wrong. this proved invaluable.

"Tranquillety at the foot of the Pyrénées"
We stayed for a fortnight in this cosy house in a tranquil atmosphere at the fringe of a village. The most valuable asset is the big terrasse with a splendid view to the Pyrénées. It's a good starting point for panoramic tours into the mountains, to medieval villages and towns, to ancient castles and abbeys etc. The Mediterranian beaches and Spain is within reach. All necessities are available in Quillan at a distance of approx. 4 km.
