On the edge of Belstone, a fine, large, detached, south-facing Edwardian house on three levels with timeless views of surrounding Dartmoor and lovely walks from the door - a walkers' paradise. On the south side, an attractive, private, level lawned garden (good for ball games), with the moor beyond. For much of its early life it was a guest house offering a quiet sanctuary for its city visitors arriving by train and pony and trap.

Inside, roomy with typically high ceilings, large bay windows and generous proportions. Entrance hall (for coats/boots) through to large inner hall with original tiled floor; depth-of-house living/dining room with good laminate floor (rugs), woodburner, TV/DVD and lovely garden/moor views through large bay windows; second smaller living room with piano, handsome fireplace (woodburner) and more lovely views; fitted kitchen (dishwasher, washer-drier, microwave, oil-fired Aga, fridge-freezer, back-up electric cooker, Sheila Maid); scullery (Belfast sink) and loo (washbasin). On the south side, a little sunroom with cane chairs and lovely lazy views.

Stairs (stairgates) up to four bedrooms – a double (5' bed, TV) with huge en suite bathroom (suite with separate shower and double washbasins); two twin (one with TV); and a single, all with lovely views; folding bed available; bathroom (bath, separate shower, washbasin); separate loo (washbasin). More stairs up to two further bedrooms – a double (5' bed, TV) with large dressing/cot room and en suite shower-room (suite), and a twin with en suite bathroom (suite) - both with great views and low beams and sloping ceilings. A delightful house in a beautiful area with direct access to the moor and just 400 yards from a pub.

The Devon region

Dartmoor: "the last great wilderness in Southern England". Great rock-tors top many of its often heather-covered hills. Marvellous for walking, riding, tor-climbing, picnicking, kite-flying, pony-trekking and, if you're at all energetic, not seeing other people. Just off its edge, amid woods, valleys and farmed hills, are many pretty villages (sometimes thatched) and very lively small towns. All is protected from caravans, tents and most ugliness by being in the Dartmoor National Park.

The half of the moor north of the B3212 is the highest and wildest; no villages within it, almost no cultivation. The southern half has the most spectacular tors, best wooded river valleys, a few villages (like Widecombe, Buckland) in green-field 'oases'. The moor's eastern edge is the softest, most wooded, most popular: Chagford, Moretonhampstead, Lustleigh and Bovey Tracey are among its best villages, and the river Teign is an exceptionally beautiful river valley. The Dart(s) – two of them rise in the moor's middle and join at Dartmeet – is/are equally beautiful all the way to the sea at Dartmouth. Very lovely, too, are the valleys of the rivers Avon, Erme, Walkham and Tavy; Tavy Cleave, on the latter, is the western moor's most dramatic place. The quality of a pub can change so quickly we hesitate to recommend, but there are plenty of them; and of places to ride or pony-trek.

Belstone

Belstone: little high village (good food pub, church, village green) on the edge of the open moor, brilliant base for walking Dartmoor's highest hills and wildest valleys. Okehampton (small town, golf, tennis, leisure centre, bicycle hire, cinema), 3½ miles; Chagford, 8; sea/sand/surf at Bude, about 30. Riding/pony-trekking and fishing locally. Filling station/shop (24 hours), 1 mile.
