The Midi-Pyrenees / Ariege region

With its stunning countryside and Mediterranean climate, the Ariege is the perfect holiday location. This area of south-west France is noted for its vineyards and pretty villages yet the safe and sandy beaches just outside Narbonne and the foothills of the majestic Pyrenées are just an hour's drive away. The region is rich in history, culture and tradition. Explore the ancient abbeys, the astounding ruined castles of the Cathars, the "Bastide" towns and much, much more.
There again, for those who simply wish to lie back, relax and chill, the food and wines of this sun-drenched corner of south west France will delight the palate of even the most discerning Francophile. From the chic, fine-dining Michelin starred restaurants, through the traditional brasseries, to eating "al fresco" at a gem of a fish bistro on the banks of the Canal du Midi - here is something for everyone to treasure. Hundreds of proud, family run vineyards lie within easy reach : the "Appelations" of Minervois, Fitou, Corbieres, St. Chinian, and Limoux (famous for its sparkling champagne-like wines before Dom. Perignon existed!) all lie within the Département of the Aude/Ariege regions.
Ariege with its mountains, lakes, waterfalls and forests, is a beautiful area within the Pyrenees. It is one of the least populated and most unspoilt regions of France and with it's mild winter climate and hot summers. The area has an abundance of wild flowers and enjoys a multitude of different species of wild lifelike the angora goats, bear, wild boar, marmot, deer, red squirrel and many birds of prey such as vultures and eagles.
The region is also steeped in history with many castles to visit such as Montsegur, or the nearest castle, which dominates the town of Foix. Visit the medieval town of Mirepoix, or the spa town of Ax Le Thermes, all of which are close by. Carcassonne is a fabulous city and well worth a visit. There are many grottos an caverns and during the summer months there are many local fetes as well as the magnificent medieval festival of lights in the grounds of the castle of Foix.
The Belloc area
The medieval town of Mirepoix with many famous festivals, markets, restaurants and bars and shops, is 10 minutes drive.
In the near by village of Leran just a short drive away there is a unique night market with food stalls and local goods on sale, this is held every Friday evening during the months of July & August.
For those who enjoy sporting activities there is swimming, canoeing, rafting, paragliding, horse riding, fishing, cycling, golf and a multitude of walks, from walking in the valley to mountains walks up to 3000 metres in altitude.
Le Nid d'amour offers a truly wonderful location to relax amongst the stunning Ariege countryside with opportunity to easily explore further a field the Med coast or the tax free haven of Andorra.
