The Northern England / Northumberland region
Northumbria is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife. Covering 400 square miles, the Northumberland National Park is the least populated of England’s National Parks, much to the benefit of those visitors seeking peace and solitude. Thousands of paths and tracks weave their way through beautiful countryside, providing exhilarating fresh air and wide-open spaces for walkers and cyclists alike.
Stay a while, roam the countryside but don’t forget to explore further, because the area known as Northumbria offers much more than just the National Park. Northumbria encompasses County Durham, the Tees Valley and Tyne and Wear, as well as covering the North Pennines ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’, the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, the City of Durham and the Heritage Coastline, boasting a selection of protected golden beaches and tiny fishing villages. Northumberland’s Heritage Coast has mile upon mile of sparkling beaches, rocky coves and picturesque fishing villages.
Sweeping from Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north, to Druridge Bay in the south, popular destinations along the coastline include the horseshoe-shaped sandy beach and dunes at Beadnell Bay, the bustling village of Seahouses, with boat trips from the picturesque harbour, and the kipper smokery and coastal path at Craster. Adding to the area’s splendour is a chain of magnificent castles: Alnwick, home to the powerful Percy family and the setting for some of the Harry Potter films; spectacular, medieval Bamburgh, standing high on its rocky outcrop; the brooding ruins of Dunstanburgh and pretty Warkworth.
The Bellingham / Otterburn area
The delightful village of Otterburn is an incredibly tranquil little place, but this was once the site of the famous 1388 Scottish victory over the English. As the former home of a thriving weaving industry, the town was once known for the world famous Otterburn Mill, an integral part of the settlement’s past. Close to the banks of the River Rede and situated between the hills and moors of the North Tyne Valley there are numerous excellent walking facilities in the area as well as a popular Coast-to-Coast route for cyclists. The beautiful Kielder Forest and Waters are close by as is the Roman construction of Hadrian's Wall, both of which are worth visiting. The area also provides fantastic fishing, horse riding and nature watching amidst superb, tranquil countryside.

Guestbook for 1827 - Drovers Rest
We (me, my husband and our dog Cody) had a really good week's break walking in this beautiful area.
The location of the cottage provided a excellent base from which to explore the area, from Kielder to the Cheviotts and Hadrians Wall to the Coast, all within a reasonable driving distance through lovely countryside. The cottage itself was of a high standard, clean and comfortable, with excellent views in a peaceful setting and a pleasant garden to relax in. It had everything we needed (and more). The owners were very welcoming and whilst they are nearby should you need anything they also gave us our privacy. The shop in Otterburn was well stocked with all the essentials and local produce needed for the stay. We would definitely consider staying here again.

,We liked the home comforts that Drovers Rest provided for us. Upon our arrival the owners even provided a vase full of lovely daffodils which was very welcoming. After long days out it was a pleasure to return to the cottage each evening. The facilities were excellent and it was ideally situated being central to most places of interest. Northumbria is a wilderness of beauty - we thoroughly enjoyed this holiday.
