BookThe Northern England / Northumberland region
The Rede Valley is located in rural Northumberland, 15 miles from the Scottish borders. It was home to the infamous Border Reivers in centuries gone by. It is a beautiful, wild and rugged area. Isolated but enjoying good road access. It lies in the Northumberland National Park which is fantastic for outdoor leisure pursuits - fishing, walking, cycling, horse riding, to name but a few. Locally there are bastles, pele towers and castles to explore that all reveal the history of the area. There are numerous stately homes and gardens that open their doors to the public - Wallington, Belsay Hall and Cragside Country House. Many nearby villages and market towns have traditional shops and farmers markets selling local produce. With the Scottish border only 15 miles away, Otterburn is a great base for discovering Kelso, Jedburgh, Melrose and the surrounding countryside. Northumberland is still a relatively undiscovered County. Summer brings tourists to the coast but inland it is still possible to hike for a day in the Cheviot hills and not bump into another soul. Spring in Redesdale sees the fields full of lambs and the valley coming back to life while Autumn is a popular time to visit with many villages hosting agricultural shows at weekends in September and October, social events for farmers and visitors alike. Alnwick castle and Gardens and the Northumberland Heritage Coast are about 1hr drive away along scenic country roads. The drive alone is a must but a trip to the coast is worthwhile come rain or shine.
The Bellingham / Otterburn area
Otterburn village has a well stocked shop for food provisions. It even does take away meals on a saturday evening. Otterburn Mill stocks outdoor clothing, shoes and equipment as well as traditional rugs. Many of the local hotels and pubs serve good quality meals with local produce widely available. Otterburn Festival takes place in July. Vintage vehicles are the bedrock of the two-day event alongside various display teams - dog agility, birds of prey,RAF parachute team. Proceeds go to support the Air Ambulance and Help the Heroes. Nearby Bellingham, 8 miles, has a larger range of food stores and craft shops, pubs and tea rooms. The Heritage Centre and Carriage tea rooms are a must, as is a walk up Hareshaw Linn to the waterfall. Kielder Water and Forest Park are only a 20min drive and has excellent and challenging cycle and walking routes and family activities including birds of prey centre.
