The Midi-Pyrenees / Gers region

The Gers, also known as Gascony, is one of the most attractive and unspoilt parts of France. The region is among the lesser-populated, largely rural areas of France. The thriving local economy is substanstially derived from agricultural and artisan's enterprise, including foie-gras and Armagnac.

Situated between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, it enjoys mild, stable climate with plenty of sunshine. Large palm trees gorw in many gardens and snow in winter is rare. The mountains are very close and Aux Memes offers a direct view to the Pyrenees.

Bellegarde area

Auch, the capital of the Gers is approximately 1/2 hour drive away. Visit D'Artagnan's statue.
Toulouse, with its shopping centre and old, traditional university can be reached in just over an hour.
Lourdes is only 90km away.
Carcassonne is also well worth a visit and can easily make an interesting day out.
The Pyrenees are also very close and in less than an hours travelling you can find the most wonderful skiing slopes (winter period only!) and plenty of walking and climbing. Not to mention the wonderful thermal spas for relaxation.
There's also a country music festival in nearby Mirande in July and a Jazz Festival in Marciac in August which is well worth a visit.
One of the stages of the Tour de France this year includes the famous Col d'Aubisque in the Pyrenees.

How to get there

Toulouse and Pau airports are just over an hour away.

Easyjet fly from Gatwick to Toulouse; Flybe fly from Birmingham to Toulouse and Ryanair fly from Standsted to Pau.

Motorway links exist to Toulouse.

Why not take a channel crossing and then travel back from northern Spain - Bilbao or Santander.
