The Rhone/French Alps region

Boasting a varied range of natural, historic, cultural and architectural heritage, the Rhone Alps region offers a vast choice of activities. Real paradise for nature lovers, this region also attracts sporty types and lovers of thrills. With its striking and varied landscapes, its nature reserves and parks, its spectacular gorges, its traditional villages, its wonderful alpine lakes, its famous ski resorts, its cities of Art and History with a remarkable heritage, and its renowned specialities, the Rhône-Alpes region can meet everyone's expectations and tastes.

The Ain region : Nestling near the Swiss border between the Saône Valley and the Alps, the department of Ain, with its varied and unspoilt countryside, boasts a rich natural heritage. Dombes with its thousand ponds, Bugey, Revermont, Savoyard Bresse, Pays De Gex and Upper Jura are regions whose beauty delights lovers of the countryside and outdoor leisure activities. As well as the varied scenery, which includes forests, hillside vineyards, valleys, cliffs, rivers, lakes, ponds, hedged farmland and mountains, you'll find traditional buildings such as farms with Saracan chimneys, fortified houses and pretty villages. Ain is a top gastronomy destination, with a number of famous specialities: Bresse poultry, pike dumplings with Nantua sauce, fish and frogs from Dombes, Bleu de Gex cheese, Comté, Bugey wines and Pérouges cake will delight your taste buds.

Bellegarde sur Valserine

The village is at an altitude of 736m and is on a plateau, which rises to 1300 m. Dairy farming is a major activity and when you see the variety of wild flowers in the meadows you realise why such excellent cheese is made here. You can visit the Frutiere at Brenod 13kms away where you can see an exhibition and video of the cheese making process. The caves at Cerdon (30 Kms) are also connected with cheese making as “Bleu de Gex” used to be matured there. The guided walk through the former underground river is not to be missed with its caverns and lime stone formations. The limestone of the area has also created some spectacular waterfalls. The nearby county town of Belley is famed as the birthplace of Brillat-Savarin whose house you can visit. The cathedral is also notable and the town has a pleasant ambience. Within a radius of an hour and a half' s drive – Chamonix/Mont Blanc to the east, the Lac du Bourget, with it's boat trips and water sports to the south, Lyon and the Dombes(hundreds of small lakes and nature reserve). There is really lots to do and see.
