The Northern France / Picardie region

The scenery of Picardy is characterised by intense agriculture and the raising of livestock. With its beaches in the north, and fields to the south, this easy-going region has plenty to explore. Picardy is steeped in history.

The battle of the Somme in WW1 made the beaches here famous in the last century, but they have featured in previous historic moments, such as William the Conqueror setting sail, and the Battle of Crécy also took place in Picardy.

The picturesque village of Gerberoy in the Oise is worth a visit, along with the gothic cathedral at Amiens, and the numerous châteaux, churches and abbeys in the region.

Belle Dune area

In the heart of the countryside, close to the Bay of Somme and to the Marquenterre ornithological park, Belle Dune is an entirely traffic free eco-village situated near the coast. The detached houses and the two-storey building are built around open stretches of water and are adjacent to an 18-hole golf course.

- The Valloires Gardens: bordering the Authie, a magnificent landscape garden boasting over 5,000 varieties of rare bushes and roses, at the foot of a Cistercian Abbey.
- The Baie de Somme Railway: 16 km-ride in an old steam or diesel locomotive train across the “mollières” and salt-meadows.
- Boat trips or walks in the bay to see the seals and explore the surroundings.
- Valley of the Somme: its numerous lakes, the “ Puits Tournants ”, the Vaux Belvedere, Abbeville, Samara Park (25 ha), Amiens and its Cathedral and Picardy Museum, the Naours Caves (refuges developed into a fully-fledged town).
- The Bay and Valley of L’Authie: Fort-Mahon Plage, Crécy Forest, Etaple-sur-Mer with its fishing museum and the sight of the sea sweeping over the bay at spring tide, its floating huts.
