Villa Ravine, Bellapais
About the home
This single story villa is located in a traffic free, level location only 2 minutes walk from the Abbey car park in the centre of the village. This is an old property and restoration is an on-going process with the latest improvements including air conditioning, four posted beds with fully fitted mosquito nets, comfortable, traditional furnishings and television monitor with integral DVD player.
Unusually light and spacious for a village home with many windows on all sides, high ceilings and full length French doors to the front terrace with uninterrupted sweeping views down to the coast below and on a clear day, Turkey beyond. There are also French doors to the rear garden and 8m x 4m pool surrounded by several different mature fruit trees and steps down to another terrace to the side of the property with panoramic views to the sea and mountains.
The mature and verdant gardens to the rear are rich in fruit trees providing a good degree of natural shade and privacy around the pool, set against the equally stunning back drop of the mountains and village houses behind.

There is a self-contained bedsit down below the house with an additional shower room. For parties of 6, the bathroom facilities may also be used. However, the bedsit is only used by the owners when family are staying.
Further details outdoors:
The house has the benefit of three different terraces/outside spaces to use at different times of the day so that the most can be made of all weathers and temperatures. There are four sunbeds and cushions with two large umbrellas for use around the pool in the garden, together with a table and chairs under a pergola with access from the kitchen. However, the walnut, orange, lemon, pomegranate and apricot trees also provide a good deal of natural shade in places around the pool terraces. On the front terrace there is a wrought iron/marble table and six chairs - cushions are kept in the house. Villa Ravine's position also allows for wonderful breezes, especially to the front terrace overlooking the coast below. Adjacent to all amenities, 3 minutes walk from 'The Tree of Idleness' and at least eight other excellent restaurants, the village bar and well stocked shop with fresh bread and anything else you might need.
Nearest supermarket, DVD shop, and hairdresser a 5 minute drive down toward the historic harbour of 'Kyrenia' the jewel of Cyprus.
Kyrenia is just 10 minutes away by car or an hour and a half by foot downhill, but would recommend a lift back up by car!. Lefkosia (Nicosia) half an hour and Gazimagusa (Famagusta) an hour. There are some excellent new roads - one going west towards Lapta and Karsyiaka and another going East out to the Karpas.
There are several beach clubs along the coast offering well-maintained facilities.
Further details
The house is looked after by English speaking representatives and the gardens managed by 'Fathima' one of the neighbours. The swimming pool is covered in the winter months (from November to March), but for any more hardy guests, can easily be made available.
Please note that although the house is on one level, and a level walk into the village centre, there are two steps up to the property and three steps up to the pool and a small drop from the surrounding terrace down into the gardens, so care would need to be taken with small children.
The house is wonderfully situated for walking or cycling in the Kyrenian Mountain range in the Spring and Autumn. Although the water is cold in winter months, the daytime temperature is often wonderful. There is a golf course; Ten-pin bowling; Scuba-Diving and other amenities within striking distance.
Conditions
A well behaved dog is allowed, but no cats please.
Strictly no smoking please except on balcony and terraces.
A deposit of 25% is required on booking and the balance 4 weeks before stay.

The Kyrenia region

The climate in Cyprus ranges from very hot in the height of summer to very pleasant in the winter - not unlike the south of Spain, but with many more guaranteed days of sunshine. Guests needn't worry about driving as it's on the left, a handy hangover from Colonial rule.
The Kyrenia district is the most important region of Northern Cyprus with the majority of shops, night-life and an enormous selection of restaurants around the beautiful 5th Century Harbour. There are also many other historic places of interest within striking distance such as the Mountain range castles of St. Hilarion, Buffavento and Kantara to the East.
There are also Roman ruins to die for at Salamis near Famagusta and at Solis and Vouni at the opposite end of the Island. The Karpas Peninsular, is also well worth the drive - probably the most unspoilt area of countryside bordering the sea in the whole of the Mediterranean - almost like time stood-still.
The Bellapais area
Bellapais, with its renown 15th century Abbey holding a commanding position on the edge of the escarpment that the village has been built on, is the most sought after district of Northern Cyprus.
It was also the home of Gerald Durrell of 'Bitter Lemons' fame in which he describes with such insight, the day to day goings on in Bellapais during the 1950s. The Abbey is floodlit and can be seen for miles from the coast down below. Partly still in tact, the Abbey is well worth a tour.
There are also important classical music festivals held there three or four times a year. Villa Ravine is 2 minutes walk from Bellapais Abbey car park.

Guestbook for Villa Ravine, Bellapais
Dear Rodney,
Thank you so much for letting us have Villa Ravine for our holiday. We had a really lovely time. The villa was perfect, and the more time we spent in Cyprus the more we realised how exceptionally lucky we were to have the uninterrupted view from the terrace and the privacy of the garden. Fathima was wonderful, and inspite of our complete inability to speak each other's language we got on famously. (I did try some Turkish phrases, but was met by blank incomprehension, no doubt the accent was far too English!). She very kindly came over with dishes of delectable things from time to time, dolma, walnuts in syrup, home made breads which were all completely delicious. The various neighbours were so friendly, and we much enjoyed our breakfast conversations with the nice goat man! We swam lots in your lovely pool and really enjoyed it. We had three days when it rained at various parts of the day, with some cracking thunderstorms. We loved St Hilarion, Kantara and Buffavento castles, and even went up Buffavento twice! We spent a day on the Karpaz peninsula, another day going West to Guzelyurt and went to Famagusta, Salamis, North Nicosia and of course Kyrenia - so I think we've 'done' north Cyprus! A fascinating and lovely holiday. Many thanks from us both,
Judy
hi rod , well we've just back from our holiday, what can i say we had fantastic time and are feeling really chilled.the villa was just perfect for us,i have to say the pics dont do it justice!!!the pool was much bigger than we expected,we were in and out of it all day,and as for the fantastic views from the terraces!!!,we had brekkie under the pagoda by the pool, coffe on the lower one after our shower and tippled loads of wine in the evening on the top one!!we ate brunch at marions, the steak sarnies were fab and what a lovely lady,we met your next door neighbours the english ones with the fab villa, and were telling ali g (we met him last year through a friend of mine)where we were staying and he knew you too!!!the weather was great,we were saved by a local bought along by fatima when we managed to lock ourselves out one morning, he leant us a ladder to climb in the top window.my boyfriend had to walk through town in his pants to get it ,i never laughed so much,i did break a wine glass so will pop some money down to you,we did leave you a cafftierre and a cooling jug,to add to your bits.we even gained a stray dog for a day who took a liking to the shade,he stayed all day then vanished,i watered your plants and trees and swept your patios, infact i loved it sooooo much i wanted to squat there forever, thank you so much for letting us stay in your home it was the best holiday we've had in years,we'll definately be renting it again and told everyone to expect us back the same time next year,so keep a few weeks at the start of may with our names on it pleeeeesssseeee, also arrived home with no suitcases as they put them on a later flight which was nice of them!!! got them back late yesterday so ploughing through the washing for next few days, sorry for rambling but it was a great holiday and thanks again , sue
