About this location
The Kyrenia District
Northern Cyprus is dominated by the town of Kyrenia with its magnificent Castle guarding the picturesque and tranquil harbour and the old village of Bellapais with its world famous 12th Century Bellapais Abbey perched high in the foothills of the Kyrenian Mountain Range.
A Northern Cyprus holiday can include visiting Crusader Castles near Kyrenia (St. Hilarion, Kantara and Buffavento), experiencing the ancient Roman Ruins at Salamis, or an outing to the spectacular Karpas Penisula and its magnificent beaches.
For unique activities there are migratory bird watching tours in Spring and Autumn, and during August-September, sea turtle watching at Alagadi Beach.
There are a whole range of leisure activities to pursue, including most water sports, yacht and boat tours, diving, cycling, paragliding, golf - to name but a few.
The enchanting village of Bellapais is dominated by it's world famous 12th Century Augustinian Abbey and is situated high in the hills overlooking the Kyrenian coastal plain. Bellapais was immortalized by Lawrence Durrell in his classic book 'Bitter Lemons' (1957) and has hardly changed since his time. You can still relax with a cool drink under the "Tree of Idleness" and watch the day slip away, or, energy permitting, explore the ruins of the beautiful Abbey and take in the superb views of the Kyrenian coastal plain below. The tranquility experienced within the Abbey walls is magical.
The centre of Bellapais (a two minute walk from our cottage) has several excellent restaurants, gift shops, and a grocery store.

"Traditional Cypriot cottage in nice village location"
Traditional cottage complete with terrace and views over the nearby abbey was a nice way to forget about stresses of modern life. Friendly village with good selection of restaurants. Cottage was well equipped and will not suit someone looking for everything new and shiny, but functional and within a traditional setting. Lack of TV was refreshing but radio playing local folk music and selection of cds was a much better anyway. Car essential to explore the north and owners can arrange for you. Overall nice setting authentic cottage with history and good location to explore.

"Peaceful homely cottage"
Hollyhocks is sited in the delightful village of Bellapais - about 5 miles south of the city of Girne/Kyrenia at the base of the Kyrenia mountains. We were able to explore the whole of North Cyprus from this central location. Bellapais is a tourist spot; many tourists come to visit the ruined monastery. As a result, there's a number of good restaurants to choose from, if you want to eat out. We found the Bella Moon the best.
The cottage itself is well-maintained and clean. It is possible to sit-out and enjoy the sunshine either at the front of the property on a nice patio, or at the rear in a lovely garden.
The only drawback was the lack of a radio, or television, but it was probably a blessing to escape the world's problems.
