The Kyrenia District
Northern Cyprus is dominated by the town of Kyrenia with its magnificent Castle guarding the picturesque and tranquil harbour and the old village of Bellapais with its world famous 12th Century Bellapais Abbey perched high in the foothills of the Kyrenian Mountain Range.
A Northern Cyprus holiday can include visiting Crusader Castles near Kyrenia (St. Hilarion, Kantara and Buffavento), experiencing the ancient Roman Ruins at Salamis, or an outing to the spectacular Karpas Penisula and its magnificent beaches.
For unique activities there are migratory bird watching tours in Spring and Autumn, and during August-September, sea turtle watching at Alagadi Beach.
There are a whole range of leisure activities to pursue, including most water sports, yacht and boat tours, diving, cycling, paragliding, golf - to name but a few.
Bellapais area
The enchanting village of Bellapais is dominated by it's world famous 12th Century Augustinian Abbey and is situated high in the hills overlooking the Kyrenian coastal plain. Bellapais was immortalized by Lawrence Durrell in his classic book 'Bitter Lemons' (1957) and has hardly changed since his time. You can still relax with a cool drink under the "Tree of Idleness" and watch the day slip away, or, energy permitting, explore the ruins of the beautiful Abbey and take in the superb views of the Kyrenian coastal plain below. The tranquility experienced within the Abbey walls is magical.
The centre of Bellapais (a two minute walk from our cottage) has several excellent restaurants, gift shops, and a grocery store.
How to get there
Airline access to Northern Cyprus is thru Ercan International Airport which is normally only a 45 minute drive to our cottage. We recommend contacting us (via email or telephone) for booking advice as you will more than likely be unable to determine accurate airline fares from the internet for this unique and exciting destination.
Larnaca Alternative: It is now possible to fly into Larnaca in Southern Cyprus and travel to our cottage in Bellapais by taxi. If you wish to pursue this route, we highly recommend booking the airport transfer through us to ensure a very competitive fare. Contact us (via email or telephone) for further advice.
Competitive car hire and free airport transfer (Ercan) can be arranged and your car delivered directly to the cottage.
