The Kyrenia District

Kyrenia has the prettiest harbour in Cyprus with 6,000 years of history including once being a Crusader port. Kyrenia Castle holds classical concerts, and is open to visitors; it overlooks the many bars, pavement cafes and restaurants within Kyrenia’s harbour and many narrow cobbled alleys. The harbour is accommodating for any time of day or night, whether for breakfast, tourist cruises, sitting in the sun watching people going by, or nightlife.
Within a short drive are the Crusader castles of St. Hilarion, Buffavento and Kantara. The fairytale castle of St.Hilarion is said to have been the original inspiration for the Walt Disney 'Sleeping Beauty' castle.
This trio of crusader castles are incredible examples of Lusignan Gothic building, perched precariously high on three of the Kyrenia mountain peaks offering views reaching far across the land and sea.

The Karpas region is well known for its Byzantine churches, and boasts some of the finest beaches and countryside. The Karpas peninsula (pan handle) is the easternmost part of the island where the land tapers into a thin strip which stretches out towards Turkey. You can visit the famous Karpas donkeys on the peninsula.

Famagusta is on the east coast a delightful old city completely surrounded by well-preserved Venetian ramparts. The ancient gothic St Nicholas Cathedral is well worth a visit, as is the eerie emptiness of the abandoned ‘ghost town’. Salamis is a little further up the coast with the remains of a Greco-Roman city, complete with baths, meeting places and amphitheatre.

There are many sandy beaches within driving distance of Kyrenia. These vary to suit each taste, from remote and picturesque such as Malibu beach, organised and supervised such as Turtle beach where you can see the very rare turtles, or lively such as Escape beach, and most are served by nearby cafes or hotels.

Shopping in North Cyprus is excellent, with well priced jewellery and clothes as well as pretty hand embroidered items, pottery, Turkish delight and lots of copies of luxury goods from Rolex watches to Gucci handbags. There are outdoor markets (e.g. near the Bus station in Kyrenia on Wednesday or near the main Mosque in the centre of Nicosia) where you can bag many a bargain as well.

Bellapais area

BELLAPAIS was made famous by Lawrence Durell’s book ‘Bitter Lemons ‘ and is arguably the most beautiful and historic village in Cyprus, with narrow streets and local shops creating the feeling that you have gone back in time. It has the 13th century Bellapais Abbey at its heart surrounded by beautiful gardens, with the famous ‘Tree of Idleness’ and small square nearby which is floodlit at night, situated within strolling distance from Villa Rosemary. There are walks in the wooded mountains above the village, and the sea and the historic Crusader port of Kyrenia lie below, just ten minutes by car. There are at least eight restaurants in the village, and classical music concerts are held in the Abbey itself. Many of the restaurants hold 'Cyprus Nights' with traditional music, belly-dancing and local specialities such as Kleftico (delicious!).
