Northern England region
Northumberland is a mix of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian's Wall, surrounded by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife. Covering 400 square miles, the Northumberland National Park is the least populated of England's National Parks, much to the benefit of those visitors seeking peace and solitude. There are thousands of paths and tracks all through the beautiful countryside, providing exhilarating fresh air and wide-open spaces for walkers and cyclists alike.
The historic town of Alnwick is only 10 miles away where you will find a thriving, historic market town with something a bit special! Even if you are not green fingered, a visit to Alnwick Gardens is a must, where you can stroll around the stunning gardens and waterfalls. Harry Potter fans of all ages should visit Alnwick Castle (or Hogwart's School) and relive some of the favourite scenes from the popular films.
The Heritage coastline is dotted with castles and villages and stunning beaches – ideal for walking all year round. The Cheviot Hills are only a short drive away offering superb views across to Holy Island and Lindisfarne. Alternatively, a stroll along the coats to Bamburgh Castle (only 10 mins drive away) or a visit to Holy Island are both ideal for a family day out.
There are lots of activities that you can take advantage of in and around the Belford area including horse riding, fishing, walking, cycling and golf. The cottage is set 1/2 mile from the A1 so provides easy access to all of Northumberland's top visitor attractions including Alnwick Castle and Gardens which is only 15 mins drive from the cottage.
Bamburgh Beach, is undoubtedly one of the best in Northumberland and arguably one of the best in England, is just 10 minutes from the cottage and offers a mile of uninterrupted sand and dunes between Budle Bay and Beadnell, with marvellous views of Bamburgh Castle. Northumberland has lots to offer the holidaymaker of all ages. There are more castles and fortified houses here than in any other county in Britain. Besides Bamburgh Castle, there is Alnwick, Chillingham, Dunstanburgh, Lindisfarne, Norham and Warkworth castles to explore and enjoy.
The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is accessible by a tidal causeway to the north of Bamburgh. The tarmac causeway is totally immersed by the sea twice a day, the times changing with the tides.
The Farne Islands can be reached by a variety of boats from Seahouses. There, one can see one of the largest colonies of grey seals in United Kingdom waters. The puffins are very attractive in their spring plumage and are always a great favourite with children.
Whatever your interests, you can be assured that you will find many things to enjoy in this stunning county, staying in what is without doubt the premier coastal village on Northumberland's Heritage Coast.
