The Mediterranean Coast region
With a glorious climate, turquoise seas and ancient cities to explore, the Turkish Riviera is one of the most fascinating up-and-coming destinations in Europe. You can relax on the endless white, sandy beaches and work on your tan, take a dip in the warm waters of the Mediterranean or wander among unspoiled nature in one of the region's beautiful national parks, most of which boast magnificent waterfalls and fauna.
Alternatively, those who enjoy an action-packed holiday will certainly not be disappointed! Many water sports are on offer in the area, including Paragliding, water skiing, jet skis, underwater diving and yachting are just some of the activities in the area. If you prefer to stay on dry land, you can choose between mountaineering, caving, white water rafting, hunting or fishing. Either way, there's no need to get bored - there is an endless variety of things to do, and Turkey is possibly one of the very few countries in the world where you can go skiing in the morning and swimming in the sea in the afternoon!
If golf is more your cup of tea, then you're also sure to find plenty to keep to entertained in Belek, which is now the home of a grand total of 8 championship golf courses with a further 3 under construction. One of these is the fantastic new Nick Faldo course. What is more, with Turkey's aim to become the golfing centre of Europe the area has a target of more than 100 courses - meaning that whether you're an enthusiastic amateur or the next Tiger Woods you're sure to find a course to suit your needs! In fact, such is the area's fame as an up-and-coming golfing centre that it has been selected to host the World Amateur Golf Championship in 2012. All of the courses offer excellent quality for far more reasonable prices than you would find in the UK or elsewhere in Europe.
Belek / Tasagil area
Some places of interest in the area include:
- Waterfalls at Manavgat, Duden and Kursunlu. The former is one of Turkey's best-known waterfalls, while the latter, located in the middle of a pine forest on one of the tributaries of the Aksu river, is exceptionally beautiful. Just half an hour away from Augustus Village, this is a perfect spot for a picnic. Kursunlu (which was once featured in a commercial for Timotei shampoo!) also offers you the unique experience of being able to walk behind the cascade.
- Caves. The town of Alanya is home to the cave of Dalmatas, which contains spectacular stalactites and stalagmite. The humid atmosphere inside the cave is reputed to relieve asthma and chest complaints.
- Sites of historical interest such as Perge, Side and Asbendos, which contain fascinating ruins (including numerous monuments and Apollo's Temple at Side and Turkey's best-preserved ancient theatre at Asbendos). The ancient theatre at Asbendos is still in use, offering you a unique opportunity to enjoy a performance at a venue dating back to the Roman era, while the town is also home to a magnificent Roman aqueduct.
- The city of Antalya, which blends the modern and the traditional. Although the city possesses all the modern conveniences you could possibly desire, if you look hard enough you can also find traces of old Turkey hidden in the back streets. Look for the Hidirlik Tower and the Karatay Medresse, an ancient castle overlooking the harbour with its old houses nestled inside. If art and history are your passion, meanwhile, then you must visit the Antalya Museum.
