"Total relaxation in a beautiful home with all the sights and sounds of the African bushveld."
I have stayed at Morkels 5 with both my teenage daughters and also alone for some much needed 'time out'. We felt safe and more than comfortable with the excellent security & facilities and did not want to leave!
The surroundings are breathtaking with a magnificent view from the the top of the ridge overlooking the African bush from the back stoep (patio). With an abundance of bird and wildlife right to the door; I was lucky enough to encounter waterbuck not 3 meters from my chair and watched in the evenings the zebra wandering past to their water hole. Nyala regularly visit the front of the house and it was wonderful to be able to step outside and meander through the bush on well marked footpaths to the watering hole where warthogs abound. The resident Eland were also frequent visitors with many other animals to view. There's a picture opportunity every moment so a camera is a must. We encountered, Wildebeest, Hartebeest, Impala, Ostrich, Zebra & Giraffe not to mention so many different birds, my favourite by far the Lilac Breasted Roller birds that would dive and call in the late afternoon. At night, with the braai lit sitting under the stars we chatted and dreamed and listened to the sound of Jackal calling. We were also very lucky to encounter an Aardvark on our night drive.
The rooms are spacious, beautifully decorated and all the bedrooms fitted with aircon and if the nights became cool the fireplace in the main living area was a huge plus. The kitchen is well equipped so cooking wasn't a chore and when the heat really starts to get to you a dip in the private splash pool was much appreciated. The bathrooms more than take care of your every need, and I took particular advantage of a long luxurious soak in the evenings to finish off the already relaxed days.
The main lodge building in the reserve is of a high standard with a terrace restaurant and delightful mini zoo and aviary to walk through. The spa is well worth a visit, pure indulgence!
Very close by is Mabula Game Reserve, the place to be if you like a little excitement. Our guides for both the quad bikes and horseback riding were friendly, knowledgeable and very welcoming. Mara and her team answered all our questions and were able to guide us to rhino, elephant, buffalo, hippo and we stopped to watch a cobra cross the road. The restaurant there by the pool offers a delicious menu. They also have game drives and a lion camp not far from the main reserve.
Bela-Bela town is a comfortable 40 minute drive away with an multitude of shops for groceries and a flea market full of local crafts and art to look around. Also the Aventura Warmbaths.
The De Wildt Cheetah Reserve close by was an excellent day out where we were introduced to Buntle the female cheetah and got up close to African Painted Wild Dogs at feeding time.
The owners, Jim & Denise were happy to help with any enquiries before our arrival and had many suggestions as to where to go and what to see. We had many enjoyable trips out based upon their local knowledge.
If you're looking for total relaxation within the beauty of the African bushveld I cannot imagine a more welcoming or comfortable place to stay and will most definitely return whether it be alone, with family and/or friends.
