The Mauritius East Coast/Grand Port region
The East Coast tends to be quieter and more exclusive than the West Coast and benefits from the cooling breeze from the sea to mitigate the heat of summer. It is centred around the Isle au Cerf area and Grand River South East is just a few minutes boat ride from the Isle. Several exclusive hotels such as Tousserok and Four Seasons are located nearby.
Grand River South East is a delightful traditional village with great views and fantastic nearby beaches, boat rides, fishing trips, golf courses and a waterfall. This is an unspoilt rural seaside village to get away from the hustle and bustle. There are taxis that can take you on island tours that are very inexpensive. The related local boatmen will take you to, and collect you from, secluded beaches or to the popular local waterfall or on fishing trips.
As well as a small local beach, the superb beaches of Isle au Cerfs are only a short boat ride away. These have wonderful clear water in the lagoon ideal for snorkling. Watersports snd paragliding are also available, along with bars and restaurants near the main landing stage. Visits to both the quiet restful beaches and the more
touristic end of the Isle are advised. The Isle also has the nearest golf course along its spine.
Whilst Isle au Cerfs has long been popular for its delightful beaches, the whole area has become more popular in the last few years and several 5* are just a short taxi ride away. This has not detracted from the unspoiled character of Bel Air and Centre of Flacq, the two local towns which still have traditional shops selling everything, often in the same store. Bartering may bring you bargains in some local shops.
Bel Air, Mauritius
The Villa is located on the the fringe of the village on the river estuaryand nearby are the well kept local park and beach, the small village store and a shady village centre. The ferry jetty is less than 200 metres from where a free ferry crosses the river to the neighbouring village of Deux Freres. Restaurants are available at the local hotels or in nearby towns. Additionally lunchtime retaurants and beach bar-b-ques are available on Isle au Cerfs by prior booking.
Buses and communal taxis pass the Villa ,but taxis with English speaking drivers are available for trips to local supermarkets or on an island tour that is very inexpensive. The local boatman will take you to and collect you from secluded beaches of Isle au Cerfs or up the river to the waterfall. On this journey you frequently can see monkeys in the trees of the gorge, or even shoals of flying fish if you are lucky.
A wide range of watersports are available on Isle au Cerfs. These include parasailing, waterskiing, tube and banana boats. Deep sea fishing for marlin is at nearby Trou de Douce as is a small waterpark. Kayaking on the river is included. Beach barbeques or inshore fishing trips can be arranged with the local boatmen. Tourist catamaran and Pirate Boats pass in front of the Villa on a daily basis.
We have found that it is pleasant to stroll around the small friendly village during either the day or eveving and you will assuredly be greeted by the local inhabitants.
