The Costa Brava/Catalonia region

Costa Brava - the wild coast - is the jewel in the Catalan Coast. Catalonia has its own identity and culture. The rocky cliff coastline and sandy beaches are a signature of this part of the Costa Brava. Surrounded by woods, ancient villages, each with its own story to tell and the best restaurants it makes for a completely different type of holiday experience from the high rise of the south of Spain. Here you will also find Figueres for the Salvador Dali Museum and Barcelona itself is a feast of culture and architecture, from Las Ramblas to the modernised waterfront and the spectacular unfinished Sagrada Familia cathedral.
The Begur area
Begur is a pretty medieval village with cobbled streets and whitewashed houses draping the hillside below the ruins of a stone castle. Catalan bars and restaurants specialising in seafood surround the central pedestrianised square.
Service is friendly and children are welcome and cherished by the Catalans. Locally produced wines compliment the fare. The vineyards producing these wines will welcome you to wine tasting . There are excellent supermarkets and specialist fishmonger and butcher shops. Freshly baked bread is available in many shops. No sign of high rise here!!
Sandy bays and small coves with beach side bars and restaurants abound such as Pals, Llafranc and Aiguablava. La Bisbal-the home of ceramic goods-is 15 mins away and is a must for pottery lovers. Girona is a beautiful city and is 45 mins by car.It will satisfy the culture-vulture and shopaholic alike. Barcelona is an easy one hour drive-this vibrant city needs no introduction! Francophiles--French border 1 hour. Good local shopping in Begur,La Bisbal, Playa de Pals and Palafrugell. Largest wine warehouse in Spain -a local landmark called Grau -in Palafrugell-an experience! Lots of local markets to be visited;both for food and local crafts-the best are in Palafrugell, La Bisbal, Pals and Begur.
This area is renowned for diving and snorkelling. Diving schools are located in Fornells, Aguafreda and Begur. Motor boats can also be hired locally on a daily basis. Horse riding, tennis, windsurfing are all available close by. For the smaller ones, face painting, puppet shows and other activities take place regularly in the local park in Begur throughout the summer months which is just around the corner from the house. For parents fed up of driving their teens around, there is a regular bus to and from the beach every hour or so that runs in summer only. Pick up point is 1 minute from the house and costs 75cent to 1 euro each way. Details from the tourist office. Excellent marked walks throughout the area for those of you feeling energetic.

We had a very relaxing stay right in the centre of Begur. We only used the car to go to the beach and visit the very beautiful areas around Begur. The accomodation was excellent with all the necessary mod cons available in the villa. The local agent was very helpful and responded to our requests immediately. There is a large number of local restaurants within a short walk from the Villa and the food is very good. The local supermarket is only 100mts away. We were absolutely delighted with our stay. |

It was our first vacation to Spain as a family with 3 young children. I wanted it to be perfect and found it with this property. It's a stunning restoration of a classic downtown villa. All the charm was retained yet all the modern conveniences were added. The location is just perfect....a five minute walk and you're in the ancient village square where we ate and participated in dancing or enjoyed local bands in the evenings. Begur is also a perfect base form which to explore the Costa Brava. Each morning we piled into the car and drove to a different destination along the coast, then returned to try a different beach each day. Every beach has it's unique characteristics, one more beautiful than the next. Stunning views from the rooftop deck in the morning and late at night. A great grocery store and small bakeries/coffe shops all within a very short walk. I sincerely could not have chosen a more perfect base for our vacation. Finally, the pool was a wonderful place to relax at the end of the night. The children couldn't get enough. Not only would I recommend this villa, but I would actually urge anyone who wants an authentic Spanish experience to stay there. You won't be disappointed. Response: Many thanks for your very generous review. Its great to know that you enjoyed your stay in our home and the Costa Brava. We have tried to retain a lot of the old character in the house, it has been there of around 130 years so needed to be refurbished with care. With the demands of todays sophisticated traveller I think we have achieved that balance. Begur and the surrounding area is stunning, the only way to experience it is to come and stay. The village is a litttle gem with great restaurants and bars. It is surrounded by lots of little coves and beaches, one more beautiful than the next, it is hard to pin down the best, they all have to be tried out. Thanks once again and you are welcome back at any time. |

I stayed in the villa with family last summer and spent a wonderful week exploring both Begur and the surrounding countryside, which has so much to offer. The villa has been meticulously refurbished and, as described, retains many of the original features, character and charm than make you feel like you're actually in Spain rather than a non-descript, Euro-villa that could be anywhere but. The house and rooms were spacious and cool in the summer heat with the fantastic, south-facing terrace offering a surprisingly secluded spot in which to bask in the Spanish sun. The pool is there for a cooling dip when you need it too. The general fit and finish, equipment and furniture of the villa were all of the highest quality and it was in mint condition when we arrived. Making a booking was completely straightforward and we were given excellent directions to the property from Girona. Begur itself is a lovely, small town with some great bars and restaurants all within an easy stroll of the villa. The villa is perched up on the side of one of the many hills surrounding the centre, with great views of the town and the surrounding countryside. You will, however, need a car to get to the beaches (and there are some spectacular ones, like Aigua Blava, within 10 minutes of Begur), some of the better restaurants that are in the area and just generally if you want to see more of the Costa Brava than just Begur. Generally, there is much to do and explore around this part of Spain and Begur is a great base from which to do it. Highly, highly recommended as a location to accomodate both groups of friends or family.

Beautiful house full of character with everything you could want even umbrellas which came in handy when we were there because it rained most of the time. Begur is a lovely little town with great Restaurants (by far the best is Turandot absolutely outstanding) and bars. This is a fascinating area copletely unspoiled but you need a car. Only slightly negative comment is that the pool is small but probably fine for kids or for cooling down in hot weather.

Hi,
Just a quick note to say how much we enjoyed our stay in your villa last year. It was fantastic to be in the village and so close to all the bars and restaurant - we tried out most of them!!The photo's of the villa do not do it justice - it lived up to all our expections and more. Our friends really enjoyed themselves and our only regret is that we can not return this year but next year -we will be there!!!!

We had the best time in your townhouse from 10th July for the week, just back, cant get over the property, pool was great..maybe a bit too warm, roof terrace was in constant use, house was top class with everything we needed. Centre was just a short stroll and restaurants were excellent. Great location with spectacular views, beaches and villages. Easy drive to beach. Thank you so much for providing great accommodation. Hope to return again with more friends. Michael and Nuala F, Ireland
Great holiday, house so close to centre was able to walk everywhere. Free shuttle bus to beach meant teens could go when they wanted and could walk to nightlife. Wonderful house, wonderful holiday..will come again!!Thanks for everything, Tric and Joe, Kildare, Ireland.
Fab house fab location. Beautiful beaches, tiny villages and an unbelievable amount of great seafood restaurants. Spent days by pool soaking up sun and nights going from restaurant to restaurant. We will be back with more friend and family. The Chamberlain family, London.
