About the home

Casa Mirador, perched on a hill in a quiet cul-de-sac, has spectacular sea views from every room. Villa, terraces, gardens and private heated pool (8x4m) are all not at all overlooked on a large plot (1300 sq m).

Totally refurbished for 2008 to a high standard, it offers spacious accommodation (225 sq m) over 2 floors, with a large living room on each floor, 5 double/twin bedrooms and can sleep a further 2 people using the sofa bed. The upper floor L-shaped living room gives onto terraces providing sun and shade and overlooks the pool, the Med and the Illes Medes. The equally spacious lower level living room gives onto the pool area and BBQ.

Free broadband internet access, satellite TV.

All year round, within a few mins drive of the villa you can enjoy the rugged coastline, unspoilt fishing villages and beaches - Sa Riera, Sa Tuna, Tamariu, Llafranc, Calella; medieval villages and towns - Pals, Peratallada. Begur, only 5 mins drive away has characterful shops, cafes, restaurants. Nearby activities: golf, diving, sailing, water sports, water park, tennis, horse riding, walks, go-karting and cycling.

The villa lends itself to large families and friends or families going on holiday together as there are two large living rooms on separate floors and several outdoor areas. There is a TV and DVD player in the living rooms on both floors and a PS2 with some games in the downstairs living room; also DVDs, books, toysand table tennis.

The villa sleeps 10 comfortably in the 5 bedrooms and can sleep up to a further 2 people using the sofa bed in the living room on the lower level at a supplementary cost. There are one double and two twin bedrooms on the upper floor and one double and one twin on the lower level, with 2 bathrooms upstairs and one downstairs. It is possible to have 3 double and 4 twin beds instead of 2 double and 6 twin. All bedrooms have uninterrupted beautiful sea views and large fitted wardrobes with hanging space, shelves and drawers

Further details outdoors:
There are extensive paved areas surrounding the large heated pool (8m x 4m) overlooking the sea with 10 sun loungers, a dining table and chairs, offering areas of either sun and shade all day.

The pool is heated with 80% renewable energy, providing a consistent water temperature of 27 C, if required. This extends the usual swimming season from 3 to 7 months, making it possible to swim comfortably from April to end October.

There is an outdoor shower by the pool. The barbecue can be enjoyed here.

The large L-shaped terrace on the upper floor offers fantastic views of the Mediterranean sea on one side and the green hillsides and pool area on the other, and an outdoor dining table with 10 chairs.

The front garden is landscaped and there is a seating area under a lovely old olive tree with views of the Illes Medes and sea.

Below the villa, going down the hillside, the garden extends into a large wooded area which children love to explore.

All the different outdoor areas and pool offer complete privacy and are all well established.

Conditions

People with difficulties with stairs need to be aware that there is a flight of stairs from the front gate to the villa and from the upper level of the villa down to the pool.

The Costa Brava/Catalonia region

The Costa Brava was the first part of Spain to be developed for tourism - though you would never know it from the entire unspoilt stretch of coastline north of Platja d'Aro to the French border, including the protected area of Begur. Mercifully, the notorious building excesses of the past stopped well short of this area, and are confined to the southernmost resorts round Lloret and Blanes, much closer to Barcelona. In the Baix Emporda region, the fishing villages and coves remain much as they were generations ago, and the preserved historic villages inland, traffic-free in many instances, are a further step back in time to an earlier, more peaceful age before tourism.

The region of Catalunya, which stretches almost 250 km inland, is perhaps the most distinctive of all Spain's regions, with its own language, parliament, culture, food and festivals almost independent from the rest of Spain. The climate in summer is far more comfortable than in the south, and you'll find virtually no signs of bullfighting, flamenco and castanets.

The geography is varied, with the Pyrenean ski resorts in the towering mountains on the border with France, areas of fertile plains inland, and a spectacular coastline which can rise dramatically from flat, golden beaches such as Pals, stretching for miles, to the rugged hills of the northern region (the Alt Emporda), which inspired Dali all his life and which has attracted many other artists and writers.

The whole area is rich in history and Catalan culture with Roman and Greek ruins at Empuries, Iberian settlements at Ullastret, Arab baths in Girona, as well as numerous medieval villages and towns. The beautifully restored medieval village of Peratallada, entirely free of cars, gives one the experience of stepping back in time.

This part of Catalunya is a haven for foodies (including vegetarians) with several outstanding restaurants in magical rural and coastal settings. A list of our favourites can be found in the house manual.

There is a wide network of short and long distance walks both rural and coastal with extremely well-maintained and signed paths including the well-marked long-distance coastal path (Cami de Ronda). Winter days are usually sunny and bright making it a wonderful time to enjoy the walks.

Barcelona virtually deserves a holiday devoted just to exploring that famous city, but for those with less time it can be reached within 2 hours by car and 1 hour by train from Flaca. Entire days can be spent soaking up the atmosphrere and absorbing the history and sites of a unique cultural capital.

The Begur area

There is something for everyone of all ages all year round in this area described as the jewel of the Costa Brava:

Throughout the summer outdoor international music festivals can be enjoyed at Cap Roig Botanical Gardens (a magical setting high on a clifftop with the Mediterranean as a backdrop), San Feliu de Guixols and Toroella de Montgri (recent artists include Bob Dylan, Diana Ross, Roberta Flack, The Chieftains, Youssou N'dour, as well as classical musicians.)

The Cap Roig botanical gardens themselves are well worth a visit at any time of the year - unique Mediterranean gardens in a spectacular coastal setting overlooking the fishing village of Calella and the Illes Formigues.

There are 3 airports nearby served by Ryanair, Easyjet and during the summer charter airlines:
Girona 45 mins approx, Barcelona 1 1/2 hours approx, Perpignan 1 1/4 hours approx. Reasonably priced car hire available from the airports. We recommend Goldcar at Girona airpport , which can be booked through www.autoamigos.com.

Driving time from Calais approx 12 hours. A car is recommended to enjoy the area fully.

We enjoyed our stay, everything was fantastic! We have travelled between Begur, Torroella de Montgri, Tossa de Mar, Girona, the mountain of El Angels, Cadaques, Pals, Peratallada, La Bisbal, all the beaches and mostly all by bicycle. We were looking for accommodation for a large group of friends to enjoy a diving holiday. We decided on Casa Mirador. The villa was exactly as described and very comfortable for a large group with plenty of comfortable seating in the lounge, large dining table and an extremely well equipped kitchen. Having heating in the pool was a huge bonus as the sun is quite low in the sky at the end of the summer. The views from the terrace are fantastic and a great setting for an alfresco breakfast. It was nice to be close enough to walk into Begur for an evening drink in the square. All in all I would not hesitate to recommend this villa for a party of up to 10 people. There were 12 in our party and we used the sofa bed in the downstairs lounge which meant that 2 people did not have as much privacy, we did not have a problem with this but it might not suit everyone.

We couldn’t have chosen better. One look at the view from any of the windows showed a panorama of blue and green—sky, the Mediterranean, and those rounded pine trees.
The house was huge, with plenty of space to spread out and have a quiet time if you wanted. We enjoyed the music system, with a large choice of cds, and books to read. Games and toys in the lower living room provided hours of fun for our 4 year old grandson.
We managed to squeeze in a lot of sightseeing between us, including: Girona, Barcelona, 3 beaches, 2 other old hill towns (Pals & Peratellada), and several trips to La Bisbal to buy pottery. Even without the car, it’s a lovely area for walking, also, shopping and the park in Begur is within reach. An experience I am assured not to be missed (we baby-sat), was the late evening fiesta on Maundy Thursday in nearby Verges of the Festival of the Dead, attracting over a thousand visitors.

We loved being in your house. It is beautiful and very comfortable with a splendid view. The consequent furnishing in white and blue gives a mediterranean feeling. The beds are super, we all slept very well. The kids loved the playstation and all the board games they found in the closet. But most of all they loved the pool. The water in the pool was at a very fine temperature! Our kids and my husband love to swim but the weather at the end of April is not alway reliable so a heated pool was one of our demands. We had a wonderful week in your house and I want to thank you for that. We did also appreciate a lot the extensive welcome packet you send us by post and the touristic information that is available in the house. Same for the 'survival packet' that welcomes you on arrival. Vacation really does start with those little things!

The house met all our expectations from what was represented at the website. It was very spacious and well-equipped. Beds were comfortable, plenty of closet space in every bedroom (with hangers, hooray!), plenty extra blankets. Bathrooms with good showers.
There’s nothing like having your breakfast out on large balcony overlooking the Med! The town of Begur is conveniently close enough for shopping for your basic groceries, there are also several fine restaurants in the town and surrounding area. The location is ideal for day trips to the many beaches, most of them only a 10 minute drive away.
We had to tear ourselves away and hope to stay there again in the future.

Very well appointed villa with superb views and in an excellent location for touring the many small and picturesque coves along this section of the Costa Brava. Upper floor and balcony is ideal for a toddler to explore without risk. Excellent pool and plenty of activities, even if you are unlucky with the weather. Casa Mirador is a lovely light and spacious villa, with sea views from every room looking out at the prettiest coast on the Costa Brava. The house has pleasant, comfortable furniture and an excellent layout and facilities, especially for two families sharing or a large family with different age-groups, offering two separate living rooms, tellies etc.
There were 11 of us, 4 couples and 3 children, and the house never felt crowded. We ate outside every day, mostly on the balcony, looking out to sea, or beside the pool which is private and surrounded by garden and the house itself.
During our fortnight's stay the house, garden and pool were very well-maintained, and a minor problem with the pool was attended to within hours. Two cots were provided at our request, which was very helpful.
The house is within walking distance of Sa Riera beach and the delightful small town of Begur, although we mostly took cars with us because we had three small children. The information in the house has very good advice on restaurants, places of interest, market days, and parking.
Our little ones loved horse-riding in the pine woods (just down the road from Casa Mirador) and the glass-bottomed boat trip from L'Estartit, while the adults particularly enjoyed Cap Roig gardens (fabulous views and cactuses), the Dali Museum at Figueres and the ruins and excellent small museum at Empuries. The medieval walled villages of Peratallada and Pals are beautiful also and good for small children because they're pedestrian only.
The bars and restaurants at Sa Riera, Sa Tuna and Begur were great. La Pizzetta in Begur is perfect for children and Mas Pou is good for a posher dinner.
We have no hesitation in recommending this house to anyone wanting a family holiday with lots to do and a tranquil, well-designed house and pool to relax in.

We had a really wonderful time staying at this villa. The house is lovely and very well equipped right down to the garlic press and salad spinner!!! We cooked in a few nights so it was great to have big pots and pans. Our first reaction was that the pictures on the website don't do justice to the house or the view. It was also very nice to have a welcome pack with a few things to get us started. We would definitely recommend the house to anyone especially a large group of friends or family as the layout of the house means two families can have their own space. We have just returned from a wonderful holiday in Begur. Casa Mirador is a well maintained,stunning villa which is very well equipped with everything you need. Inside the villa is very spacious and there was plenty of room for our party of 4 adults and 3 children.The decor and furniture is modern and the villa was spotlessly clean for our arrival,the welcome basket was also a lovely touch.The heated pool was a huge bonus and our children had a great time in it. Begur itself is a stunning place with many beautiful beaches and plenty of places to eat out. A car is a must to fully explore the area. Begur itself is a quiet, laid back place which made our holiday very relaxing. There are many busy places up and down the coast within a 20 minute drive which were great to visit and then return to the peace and quiet of Begur. The villa owners were incredibly helpful and the information pack sent to us before we left included easy to follow directions from the airport and loads of information about places to visit. The house worked perfectly for our group of 8 friends allowing everyone their own space but with living areas that were big enough for us all to socialise together. With an unobstructed view of the med dining on the balcony or beside the pool was a joy! Great local food, amazing coastal walks and plenty of sunshine made this a great week away. Totally recommend it to anyone looking to have some time away as this house offers you a haven as well as being close enough to the town and beach to get involved when you want to. We arrived at Casa Mirador & immediately felt at home. The views from all the rooms were fantastic & absolutely breathtaking from the living room & dining area. You could just sit on the sofa & look down the valley towards the bay.The house is suitable for 2 families who want their own space as it is arranged as 2 separate living areas upstairs & down except for a shared spacious kitchen on the upper floor. There is room for both families to eat upstairs & plenty of sofas for both upstairs too.The pool was lovely, again with the same great view. Nous sommes partis à 3 familles, et cette maison nous a permis de passer d'excellentes vacances. La vue des terrasses est sublime (parfait pour les petits déjeuners ou les diners), l'endroit est très calme. La maison est très facile à vivre sur 2 niveaux: avec le salon du rdc, cela nous permet d'avoir 6 chambres cad 2 chambres par famille, avec chacun sa sdb. La vie se fait sur 2 niveaux: en haut les salons, la cuisine, la terrasse pour diner, 3 chambres et 2 sdb; en bas, 2 chambres, 1 sdb, et le salon-chambre pour les ados, tout ça au niveau de la terrasse de la piscine (avec bbq, salon de jardin, et bcp de chaises longues). Ensuite, il faut prendre les voitures pour aller dans le centre de Begur (le shopping entre filles est très fructueux) ou aux plages (mais tout l'intérêt est de changer de plages tous les jours, aller à sa riera, pals, sa tuna); pour nous, c'était un peu dur d'arriver à 12 sur les petites plages, mais en y allant tot (11h), on a tjs trouvé de la place. We rented Casa Mirador in a week in July and were very curious as to whether the images from the Internet will live up to our expectations.
It did more than that. We were two families whom had rented it and enjoyed the house in full drag. One family lived on top of the floor and one downstairs, which was a perfect fit. We were in the pool several times a day, and enjoyed the space at the pool where the opportunity to be in the sun or read in the shade were. We were at home nearly every day for dinner and the kitchen functioned well. We enjoy the dinner on the balcony and watched the sunset over the mountains and in the morning we were inside due to the hot sun. It was not easy to find a villa that seemed to tick all the boxes for our family group of ten people ranging in age from 10 to 64, but Casa Mirador was certainly an inspired choice. We already knew the area slightly but nothing prepared us for the fabulous views and generous accommodation that the villa provides. The very well-stocked kitchen makes catering easy, and having three bathrooms means nobody has to wait too long. With lots of different seating and relaxing corners to choose from, inside and out, - not to mention the ping pong table and swiming pool - there really is little need to venture beyond the garden gate. But of course you do, with plenty of places to choose from! The go karts were very popular with some but I think my favourite place is Pals with its winding streets, inviting shops and amazing views from the top of the hill.

Added to the good levels of maintenance of villa itself, the excellent service provided by the owner from the very first contact greatly enhanced the holiday for us. She really seems to want her guests to have a first class experience and goes out of her way to ensure this happens.

My husband and I stayed at Casa Mirador for a week at the end of May 2010, with our married children, spouses and five grandchildren aged 6, 5, 4, 3 and 1.
The villa was absolutely great. The house & kitchen were very well equipped and every room had a super view down the valley to the sea. The photos in the description were a true & accurate portrayal of the setting.
The pool was the centre of our activity (we paid a small additional charge to have it heated in early summer) and we ate most of our meals on the terrace. The BBQ was well used.
We found the whole area around Begur to be charming. Begur itself is delightful with a mixture of modern amenities and old world charm. A quiet drink in the square listening to the local band on a Sunday night is not to be missed (after a streuous walk up to the castle!).
We found a car very useful, enabling us to visit many of the delightful small coves & beaches to be found within a 10 minute drive. The facilities at the coves were good, ranging from a basic beach cafe to classy restaurants.
After many visits to the more popular areas of Spain, we realise that Begur is a hidden gem and will certainly be returning to Casa Mirador. Margaret, Newcastel, UK, July 2010
As I write this review I'm hoping that the friends we stayed with at Casa Mirador this April have secured it for all of us this autumn half term. We spent the last week of April there, as six adults and three children from 8 to 10 years and we Ioved every minute.

Very well equipped, with fabulous views over the sea and islands. The two lounges are a definite benefit allowing the kids to hang out downstairs without crowding the grown up space. A generous arrangement of bedrooms and bathrooms means that everyone has space and privacy. A major benefit for us in April and October is that the pool is heated.

Begur is everything you want from a medieval town with tapas, castle and addictive boutiques. The walk down to the nearest beach is a joy. Back up is a challenge but you feel you've earned the glass of rose when you get there.
