The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente region

The Charente is situated in Central Western France. It is mainly quiet and rural, with stunning views. The climate of the Charente is one of the mildest in France, and the coastal area of this region is the sunniest part of France outside the Mediterranean coastal areas.
In brief, the region covers the central part of France's Atlantic coastal plain, together with a gently undulating hilly area further inland, the first foothills of the Massif Central. In the southern part of the region, extensive vineyards provide the grapes that are used in the production of Cognac and the famous local apéritif wine Pineau des Charentes.
The Beaulieu-sur-Sonnette area
Beaulieu-sur-Sonnette is a charming, very quiet village, situated on a hill, overlooking fields bursting with sunflowers, corn and vineyards. It has a well stocked, village shop and post office. It is ideal for walking, cycling, fishing, swimming. The area is full of many excellent restaurants and bars. Every year on the 14th July there is a spit roast to celebrate Bastille Day, and all day celebrations, including firework display.
Historic Angoulême, Limoges and Poitiers are the nearest cities, with excellent restaurants, shops and attractions. Angouleme Music Hall has events throughout all the year. Angoulême is home to the world famous Cartoon Museum. There is a cartoon festival every year. Enjoy classical music all the year round at the City's theatre. Gastro events at Les Halles, a large covered market place. September: Les Ramparts, racing vintage cars.

Confolens – attractive town on the Vienne river; novel excursions by Vélo-rail, set up by a group of railway enthusiasts to keep an old line open. You pedal on specially adapted 5-seater four-wheeled carriages. It holds an annual International Festival of Music and Dance
Cognac, famous for its distilled products, most of the famous cognac houses offer guided tours. Boat rides along the Charente river. Cognac runs a Jazz and Film Festival over the summer at the start of July with great headline acts.
La Rochelle's aquarium and Arche de Noé (Noah's Ark) animal farm are perfect for children.

The gite was much more spacious than we expected, with lovely grounds and pools. The kitchen was easily big enough for our daily provisions and also to support more people coming over for various dinner - we had extended family staying close by as we were all over for a wedding in the area. The tables outside for breakfast and dinners were a great way to enjoy the fresh air and expensive views. The wifi coverage was a bit limited and having just one bathroom required a bit of shower logistics, but didn't take away from the experience. Would stay again if we were returning to the area. |
Guestbook for La Gite
The Aytos arrived the end of May to christen the gite. Truly home from home. We could not have been more comfortable and we have been made so welcome. Definitely a place to return to. Loved it. Thank you.
The Fraser family arrived to a very warm welcome. All were friendly and attentive hosts. The gite is comfortable, well appointed and spacious. The pool cold but fantastic. The village is truly beautiful. Places to visit within an hour or so; Poitiers, Angouleme, Cognac. Good cafes and restaurants to sit and watch the world go by. Thanks very much.
Ian and Fran Nuttall booked last minute but everything was in place and we were made most welcome indeed. We have enjoyed staying at the gite very much indeed. Thanks again for your hospitality.
Arrived at the last minute but we were welcomed warmly. The gite surroundings and company were so relaxed that we rarely felt the need to go out. The pool was a God-send in the 100 degree plus heat.
Très agreeable gîte. On se sent bien, ou calme, à la champagne. Jolie decoration! Merci.
C’était très bien, très propre et très agreeable. Mais la pause à la champagne restait la bienvenue! Merci
