The Limousin/Auvergne region
The Corrèze to the north boasts a diverse range of scenery, from the mysterious atmosphere of the Plateau de Millevaches to the gentle pace of life in the Brive region, from the dramatic gorges of the Dordogne to the green valleys of the Vézère and Auvézère rivers and the forests of the Tulle region. An exceptional heritage of châteaux, fortresses, churches and villages bears witness to a rich past. Historic sites, museums and exhibitions offer year-round visits and events.
To the south is Cahors in the Lot with its well-known vineyards, the underground lakes in the Padirac caves and the famous pilgrimage site of Rocamadour, perched perilously on the side of the Alzou canyon. There is a wonderful music festival held in Saint-Cere during July and August.
Beaulieu sur Dordogne
Situated on the banks of the Dordogne River, the town of Beaulieu-Sur-Dordogne knows nothing of modesty as its name literally means ‘beautiful’. The village does, however, have good reason for this. Its small, romanesque Abbey is widely seen as one of the best examples of such architecture around, while many of the river-front houses have glorious facades from the 17th and 18th Century. Added to this, the village is superbly situated, provoking those with a passion for the outdoors to fall in love with it, including Channel 4’s ‘A Place in the Sun’, which gave it a glowing review.
