The Languedoc-Roussillon / Gard region
Beaucaire prides itself on being at the crossroads, "entre le roseau et l'olivier" - between the reeds of Camargue and the olives of Provence. Its location has made it an important settlement since Roman times and the site of many a bloody conflict. Dominated by the ruins of a magnificent castle high on a rock and bounded by the Rhône on one side and the Canal Du Rhône à Sete on another, the town used to be a magnet for traders from all over Europe, who came for its renowned annual fair. Today, it remains largely untouched by time and below the tourist radar, a chance to enjoy a genuine taste of French provincial life.
Beaucaire area
For lovers of nature, of walking or cycling, sporty or leisurely, Beaucaire Terre d'Argence offers a great choice of outings could lead you through, vineyards, garrigues and olive groves.
And if you love to ride then this can also be done, there is a wealth of attractions and musuems. One such place is Auguste Jacquet museum,Beaucaire.
Located in the castle gardens, the museum contains a very rich collection of archaeological remains dating from paleolithic times to the Middle Ages, and objects from the excavations in the medieval fortress. There is an exhibition of posters for the Beaucaire Fair, alongside a collection of traditional local crafts. Traditional crafts, such as basket-, chair- or stained glass-making, exist side by side with decoration and design - for the greater enrichment of both. Potters, embroiderers, leatherworkers and other professional craftsmen.
All of this to work up an appetite before sampling the local hospitality in one of the charming eateries.
