Church Gate Cottage
Cottage | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
Church Gate Cottage is a very well appointed character cottage located in the delightful rural village of South Perrott. Situated on the West Dorset / Somerset border, our cottage offers a central location from which to explore the delights of the regions landmark towns and quaint rural villages, as well being within close proximity to a number of coastal towns and beaches. The location lends itself equally well to guests with an interest in exploring the regions many historic towns and villages, those looking for a more active outdoor holiday (we have storage space suitable for bicycles, golf clubs and other sports equipment), those wishing to spend their days exploring the regions many coastal towns and beaches, or those simply looking for a quiet hideaway in which to relax well away from the bustle of daily life.
As its name suggests, our cottage occupies a prime location next to to the village church on a quiet cul-de-sac where it nestles among other similar character properties. There are no shops within South Perrott, but we do have a friendly village pub which serves traditional pub food. The nearest convenience store and Post Office is in the neighbouring village of Mosterton, and for a more substantial shop the nearby town of Crewkerne (3 miles by road) has a selection of supermarkets, a pharmacy, tea shops, restaurants, food outlets and other convenience stores. Beaminster is another charming Dorset town located just a few miles to the south of the village which offers shops, restaurants and pubs. For those wishing to travel a little further afield we are within easy reach of Yeovil, Sherborne, Cerne Abbas, Bridport, Dorchester and Weymouth.
We strongly recommend that a car is essential for anyone seeking to roam extensively throughout Dorset and Somerset from Church Gate Cottage. If however all you hanker after is a peaceful setting in which to relax and unwind, you may find a good pair of walking boots and an occasional taxi will suffice for the duration of your stay.
Our cottage has parking immediately to the front of the building suitable for a large family car. There is a lay-by opposite the pub (100m walk from the cottage) which can amply accommodate a second and third guests vehicle if necessary.

We have done our utmost best to furnish Church Gate Cottage to a high standard. Not only do we want you to be as comfortable as possible, and enjoy all the 'mod cons' you'd expect to find in a modern home, but we like to spend time there too, which should mean we've not overlooked any details in the equipment we've provided throughout the cottage. It isn't apparent from the photographs, but we have a second WC with wash basin downstairs, a useful addition when the cottage is full. A babys travel cot is available (and does not count towards one of the six beds!) but guests are requested to bring their own cot bedding if they intend to use this facility.
The garden is simple, with a well built, lit patio immediatley outside the back door, raised beds around it, and a small lawn. It is equipped with a table, several outdoor chairs and a parasol. If you come to stay in the late summer please help yourself to cooking apples from the tree.
|Further details outdoors|
Please note that we ask all guests not to smoke inside our cottage, and not to use naked flames or conventional coal or charcoal barbeques within or outside the property due to the fire risk this poses to the thatched roof.
Please get in touch if you are interested in short breaks of 3 nights or more. We will be as accommodating as possible.
Short notice bookings and 'late deals' may be possible. Please contact us for availability and prices.
The West Country region
South Perrot and the neighbouring village of Chedington are the two most westerly villages in Dorset, lying just short of the county boundary with Somerset. The village has existed since the Dark Ages, and its history can be traced back to records published in the Domesday Book, 1078.
South Perrott is situated in a valley on the Crewkerne to Dorchester road (A356). The River Parrett, from which the village derives its name, winds through this valley, at the top of which the A356 rises steeply, cutting through a wooded ridge in a pass known as Wynyards Gap, in which a renowned public house, the Wynyards Gap Inn is situated.
The village is small, and through its collection of historic stone buildings, many of which have thatched roofs, retains much of its historic charm and character. South Perrott has its own inn, The Coach and Horses, where you'll receive a warm welcome, a village hall, and a church, St Marys, which dates back to the 13th and 15th centuries. There is neither a shop, post office nor a school in South Perrott, however local amenities aren't far away; nearby Mosterton has the nearest shop and Post Office, and Crewkerne has a selection of supermarkets and other shops, food outlets, restaraunts and services as well as the nearest railway station.
Being in such a beautiful rural setting, and situated with a variety of of country footpaths and bridleways on the doorstep South Perrott makes a perfect location for a relaxing holiday for those who want to enjoy long or short walks in the rolling Dorset and Somerset countryside. Bring your boots and follow the River Parrett trail up out of the village to Chedington where you'll be able to reward yourself with a pint of local ale or cider at Wynyards Gap. Alternativley, bring your wellies and follow the River Parrett up to the Millennium Green where you'll find a small outdoor play area to delight your children. For the more adventurous, why not head out of the valley to Beaminster to have a look at a truly picturesque Dorest town?
We strongly advise anyone holidaying in our cottage to bring a car. Whilst it isn't essential, there are so many interesting places to visit within a short drive that it would seem a shame not to take the opportunity. Dorchester, the county town of Dorset, is a must for any Thomas Hardy fan, and though further than Crewkerne from the cottage, it offers a greater range of shops for those wishing to 'scratch a retail itch'. Further afield are other historic Dorset market towns such as Sherborne, Cerne Abbas and Blandford Forum which are also worth a visit.
In the summer we like to head to the coast for days out with the kids. The famous landscapes of the Jurassic Coast are rich with beaches and fantastic scenery. West Bay near Bridport is small, picturesque and relativley un-touched by commercialism. Lyme Regis is a favourite with our kids, who like to hunt for fossils on the beach (and in the many fossil vending shops in the town!) and there is a sheltered sand beach here safe for youngsters to play on. For a larger seaside town, why not spend a day in Weymouth (approx 45 min drive from South Perrott). It has an extensive sand beach, and of course has benefitted hugley from investment associated with the 2012 Olympic sailing which will take place there in July and August.
If you have the energy for more walking after tramping round South Perrott and Chedington, then why not tackle a coastal path walk up Golden Cap near Chideock, which at 191 metres is the highest cliff on the English south coast.
For alterative activities, perhaps even for a rainy day, why not consider visiting one of the many museums near South Perrott. Yeovil boasts the superb Fleet Air Arm Museum, and Bovington offers the first class Tank Museum, and just down the road in Wareham you'll find the Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre. Abbotsbury Swannery is another notable local wildlife attraction.
Steam enthusiasts may wish to consider a trip to the East Somerset Railway in Cranmore near Shepton Mallet (about a 50 minute drive from South Perrott) or possibly combine a day out to Corfe Castle on the Isle of Purbeck with a trip to the seaside on the Swanage Railway. This will take a little longer by car at approximatley 1 hr 20 minutes driving time to Corfe from South Perrott.
If you're in the mood for a swim, but don't want to travel to the sea, Crewkerne has a well appointed leisure centre with an indoor swimming pool.
With over 30 golf courses to choose from, Dorset is a golfer's paradise and the ideal location for a golf holiday. Sadly the really local club in Chedington Court has closed recently, but there is a club in Sherborne just 14 miles away. From nationally renowned to pay and play courses, there are many venues to suit the novice or the expert. Church Gate Cottage has a lockable shed in the back garden in which clubs and other sports equipment can be housed.
If you prefer to explore the world by horseback there are many riding schools and pony trekking centres throughout Dorset and Somerset. Most locally you'll find Hill View Riding Stables in Crewkerne, which operates all year round and for all abilities and ages of rider.

We stayed at Church Gate for a weekend, it is a lovely cottage decorated to a high standard. The welcome basket was a lovely surprise. It is within reach of the Jurassic Coast and Dorchester. We didn't put the TV on once but did play some of the many board games on offer. Enjoyed a meal in the local pub and had a great time playing skittles there! Can't recommend highly enough - I look forward to booking again.
