The Northern England / Yorkshire / Northumberland region

The coastline of North Northumberland is well known for it's sandy beaches and superb scenery along with its picturesque villages overlooked by magnificent castles. One of these being Bamburgh, ancient royal seat of the kings of Northumbria, is set in one of the most breathtakingly picturesque coastal regions the country has to offer. Its enormous beaches go on for miles and the area has featured in many epic films.

Alnwick -pronounced "Ann-ick" , is the seat of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland their home the Castle (used in the Harry Potter Films) is open April to October and Award winning Gardens are open daily are just a 15/20 minute drive away.

Further along the coast is Berwick upon Tweed - all around thetown are reminders of Berwick's history as a Border fortress town, from the ruins of its medieval castle and town walls, its unique Elizabethan fortifications, the 18th century barracks, gunpowder magazine and guard-houses, to the emplacements for guns that defended Berwick during two World Wars.

Beadnell area

The historic village of Beadnell lies just a few miles east of the main A1 that links Edinburgh with Newcastle-upon-Tyne, but despite this, it remains off the beaten track and as a result has not been spoilt by over-development. Beadnell has much to offer the visitor, with its rugged yet beautiful coastline and views to the distant Cheviot Hills.

This combination of charm and accessibility makes Beadnell one of the most popular holiday villages on the north east coast. Just off this stretch of coastline, lie the Farne Islands. Well known by SCUBA divers and naturalists alike, these islands are host to a diverse cross section of marine life and coastal species. Boat trips to the Farne Islands can be arranged from Seahouses, 2 miles north of Beadnell

The many coastal walks provide breathtaking views along this Heritage Coastline especially between Holy Island and Alnmouth, Beadnell being mid way.

Ramblers will delight in the miles of unspoilt footpaths, beach and country walks. The varied terrain is easily accessible by foreshore and footpaths.

Birdwatching is extremely popular around the natural dune habitats and nearby bird sanctuaries. Winter birdwatching is arguably better than in the breeding season of May or June. Sea duck can be observed, including scoter, eider, widgeon, to name only a few, and also many divers and grebes.

For naturalists, the coastline provides a haven for wild birds and mammals as well as wild flowers in abundance.

Cycling is particularly enjoyable in this area along quiet country lanes or bridal paths where the rider will find spectacular sea views and scenery.

Dedicated watersports enthusiasts and the casual visitor alike will find Beadnell and its beautiful bay has everything on offer from jet skiing, water-skiing - some of the best sailing and windsurfing on the Northumberland coast is to be had here. Excellent facilities are on offer, including car and trailer parking, boat launching and recovery, toilet and shower block.

Dinghy and small yacht sailing is a very popular pastime during the summer months, with regular organised events taking place. Beadnell Sailing Club offers its members all the usual facilities, including boat storage and chain moorings for yachts on the beach next to the harbour. The club holds a sailing week in August with racing, particularly for younger members, together with an enjoyable social programme culminating in a regatta.

How to get there

Beadnell is best accessed by car via the A1, the cottage is approximately 15mins from A1. Buses/coaches run on the hour from Newcastle/ Berwickt to the village. The nearest main North East train line stops at Almouth, Berwick and Chathill which is 5 mins from Beadnell by car.
