Home description
The village of Bazoges en Pareds is renowned for its medieval castle and church and is one of the prettiest villages in Western France. It also boasts a renowned restaurant, a friendly bar, a tabac/ grocery shop and, of course, a boulangerie all a short stroll from our cottage.which is located in a courtyard just off the main village square.
There are numerous tourist attractions in the area from the world famous 'Puy du fou' to some of the more quirky attractions such as the 'velorail' (a pedal powered ride on an old railway track) but many of our guests prefer to just chill out and enjoy the pool and the garden and babrbecue area.
The coast is less than an hour away with some fantactic beaches but you also have the benefit of the beautiful rolling contryside and gloriously empty roads with any number of authentic restaurants and vineyards along the way as well as one of Frances bigest and most scenic forests at Mervent.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Vendee region
The Vendee is on the west coast of France and is one of the premier holiday regions in France due to the high number of sunshine hours it gets, second only to the South of France Med coast. There are miles of unspoilt beaches backed by pine forests as well as busy and stylish resorts such as Les Sables d'Olonne or La Rochelle.
Away from the busy coastline and the flat coastal plain slowly rises the 'bocage' or the gently rolling hills of the Vendee, the real heart of the region. Surprises are around every corner as the hills and valleys reveal their pretty sleepy villages and historical chateaus and churches and it is hard to imaging the terrible and bloody history of the area told in a sound and light spectacle not to be missed at the famous 'Puy du Fou'. There are many other tourist attractions to keep you occupied but the scenery and the way of life here are the main draw, somehow it just pulls you in and makes you relax.
Bazoges en Pareds area
Bazoges en Pareds is a village set in as commune of just over 1000 inhabitants, small enough to retain it's sleepy French style but big enough to provide the basic facilities you might need while there are plenty of large shops and supermarkets at Chantonnay, just ten minutes drive away. The village is dominated by the fortified castle or 'donjon' in French which is fully restored and open throughout the summer including the authentic medieval gardens.
During the summer there are a number of 'soirees' at the donjon where dozens of locals dress up in medieval garb and re-enact life from those days. This highly recommended evening includes a meal at the locally renowned "Auberge du Donjon'. There is a large lake nearby with a beach area and swimming facilities and within 15 minutes the forest of Mervent with over 200 hectares of trees and lakes.

Guestbook
"We thought the Gite was great, very spacious, clean and comfortable. The outside space was just what we wanted, the accommodation and grounds provided a lovely and relaxing holiday. The garden was large and secure so the children could play out without us having to watch them all the time. Both Jane and Brian were excellent hosts and a pleasure to meet. If you have children and want a family get away I would definitely recommend it." Zoe - Essex
"Lovely location right opposite the Donjon. The owners Jane and Brian were brilliant - they couldn't have been more welcoming. Lots to do around the area: Puy de Fou is a MUST as is the soiree at the Donjon in Bazoges - two great evenings! Lazy days at the Gite too with lots of sun, having water fights with the children in the pool, bbq and wine in the evening. We'll be back!" Thomas - Leavenheath
"We spent a fantastic two weeks at Bazoges-en- Pareds. The house was very comfortable and had everything that we could possibly have needed, including all the games to play with the children in the evening. The swimming pool was excellent and we managed to fit in a swim every day. There is a very relaxed atmosphere at the cottage and we just slipped into complete holiday mode spending days lazing by the pool and sitting in the garden. If you are looking for a real get away from it holiday then this is the place for you. Our hosts and their family were lovely and could not have been more helpful, recommending places for us to visit and things to do in the area that they had tried out previously. Although the cottage is set in a quiet village, it is not too far to drive to La Rochelle if you need a shopping fix or the nearby town of Chantonnay to stock up the shelves. We had a great holiday and could not believe how quickly the time passed, it was over all too soon. Hopefully we will manage back again." Sharon - Islay, Scotland
"Three glorious weeks! The weather has been kind and we have had clear blue skies everyday. We have found the accommodation first class, with everything you need here. We had a problem with our ferry crossing and Jane and Brian went out of their way to help us resolve this. We have swam, cycled and walked to our hearts content and our dog managed to fall in love (least said the better!). We spent a lovely afternoon on the kayaks at La plage du lay, the children enjoyed it very much, it is approx 15 mins away by car. We also visited the go-karts, this was enjoyed on two occasions by David and the boys, aged 11 + 14. My seven year old was too small but she enjoyed the donkey in the next field! By far our favourite place is the ‘Foret d l’Aventure. This is near the go-karts and it is a vast tree top adventure park with zip lines and many ‘hazardous’ trails through the trees. There are three different levels, a min park for children over 1 metre, a park for children over 1 metre (this my daughter and I did and this was still very challenging and we had a ball). The main adventure level is superb. David and the boys completed this level and it was so good we returned the next week and did it all again!! We spent a day at Les Sables d’Olonne which is a lovely seaside town. The beach is lovely and there is a vast promenades with lots of restaurants and shops. By far the best times have been spent in and around the gite, our children have lapped up the sunshine and splashed in the pool. We have min-army training schools with Billy and Joey and we have BBQ’d and enjoyed lots of lazy times in the garden. Jand, Brian and the boys (and not forgetting Bazoo) have welcomed us and made this a great holiday, it is with very heavy hearts that we leave but as Arnie once said ‘We shall be back’

"Village gorgeous, weather fab, gite top class, pool refreshing. When you’ve got all this why go anywhere? – so we didn’t and had a fantastically refreshing weekend! Thanks guys, we’ll be back again.
Mark and Simon, New Ash Green, Kent
