The Andalucia / Granada Province region

The Granada Province of Andalucia is a diverse mixture of rich green valleys, lakes, mountains , flat farm land and dry arrid plains. It is home to the beautiful " Alhambra Palace ", ski-ing in the majestic mountain range "Sierra Nevada ", and the amazing palm treed coastline of the " Costa Tropical ". Just over the border in the province of Almeria is " Cabo de Gato" a protected area of totally unspoilt beaches and small secluded coves.
The Baza area has a perfect all year round climate. April to May its warm with plenty of sunshine, June to August its hot without being humid. Because of its elevation above sea level, the air is dry and much cooler on a night. September to October is perfect walking, biking weather, not to hot but still plenty of sunshine. And if you love the snow, then from December through to March the ski slopes of the " Sierra Nevada " are only an hours drive away.
The Baza area
A visit to the Alhambra Palace is not to be missed, Granada also has a great shopping centre, golf course, and ski-ing on the Sierra Nevada .
The Folk Dancing Festival in August, lasts for three nights and is completely free to watch. It includes a variety of dance troops from Andalucia, other provinces and the Spanish Islands.
Every August Bank Holiday weekend, Baza hosts its own " Amazing Dancing Horse Show ". If you love horses
this is a must see.
Bazas main festival starts on the 6th of september and lasts for 10 days, with many traditional activities like flamenco dancing, carnaval style procession, paella and firework display.
You can go horse riding, hire mountain bikes, fish, swim or walk in some of the most breath taking countryside that rural spain has to offer.
Every Tuesday and Thursday, during July and August, the Junta ( council ) run free activities for children of all ages in the park ( where there is also a great bar for the parents ) . A great evening out for everyone.
The municiple swimming pools also run activities and evening entertainment.
Wednesday is Market day in Baza, where you can buy the locally made blue, green and white pottery,or handbags, shoes and jewelry ( to suit every outfit ) and much more !
For the 16 plus Baza has a couple of indoor discos, a very lively outdoor disco and numerous bars.
In the town centre you will find the beautiful " Plaza Mayor" in which is situated the town hall, the museum and the " Iglesia Mayor", built in 1529 with its amazing architecture it dominates the square.
The cafe culture of Europe can definitely be tasted here, you can sit and watch the world go by or if you want to join in the choice is yours.
Granada is only 1 hour drive on quiet motorway.
The beautiful white village of Mojacar and it beaches is also an hours drive.
The riverside walk in the Gorge at Castrill is a 30 minute drive.
Guadix, market and small village of Purullena with its traditional pottery stalls and Cave Museum is a 20 minute drive.
And the amazing scenery in the "Natural Park Carzola" Andalucias largest protected natural park is about a 40 minute drive, but worth it.
Almendra Apartment is also a great place to base yourselves whilst looking for your perfect property.
You can still find a bargain in the Baza area of the Granada Province.
ACTIVITIES.
For a "Fun " day out, why not hire our Kayak's from us. Lake Negratin is only ten minutes by car, where there's a great restaurant. You can also hire pedalo's from the icecream kiosk on the beach.
If you prefer to stay on land, we also have mountain bikes to hire. There are so many trails to follow you never have to touch a tarmaced road. Take a picnic and dissapear for the day.
The countryside around Baza is ideal for Horse Riding, again you can follow the trails and never have to go near a main road. ( From 10 euros per hour ).
In July and August, when the temperature is at its highest, take a walk along the banks of the " Rio Castrill " down through the gorge to the old mill, where you can cool your feet in the river and your thirst with an ice cold drink.
A trip down to the coast is only an hour away. Over the border into the Province of Almeria is the beautiful traditional white washed village of Mojacar, sitting high on a hill top, overlooking the white sandy beaches and jewel blue Med.
Almeria is also the home to the Tabernas desert, the only one to be found in Europe. This was the setting for the series of Spaghetti Western films made in the 1960's, which is now a Theme Park known as
Mini Hollywood, You never know, you just might see Clint ride in on his horse !
The ALHAMBRA PALACE.
The Alhambra Palace must be top of your " to see " list. (One hour by car on extremely quiet motorway).
With its amazing Moorish architecture and Gardens, dating from 1237 when Muhammad I al Ahmar, founder of the Nasrid dynasty first installed his court.
Over the decades it has undergone many changes and additional buildings with each changing Sultan, King or Queen.
In 1870 the Palace was declared a National Monument and from 1923 untill 1936 was restored to the
beautifull building you can see today.
In 1984 the UNESCO declared the Alhambra and the General Life Gardens a World Heritage Site.

Wanting something different from a holiday, this was the first time we have rented an apartment and hired a car. Flew to Malaga, easy to get onto main road, but watch for the turn off onto the A92-N at Guadix towards Murcia to find the apartment. Totally hooked, able to explore places you wouldn't normally see and having the perfect base to do it from. Spacious interior, very well equiped, supermarkets a short drive away, lovely pool for keeping the kids entertained and barbie area for lazy evenings star gazing and watching electric storms and having a meal and drinks with family and friends and another outside dining area on patio under the grape vines. Beautiful secluded location in olive and almond groves, but only a 10 min walk to the nearest bars (take a torch). All the places listed, Alhambra Palace, Negratin Lake (hire the kayaks for a funfilled day), Guadix, Mojacar, Thermal pool, Castril Gorge Walk, Sierra de Baza, are all worth a vist and easy to reach. Eagles, vultures, deer, squirrels are amongst some of the wild life we saw. Would recommend hiring a fan for bedrooms as there is noise from the main road nearby when shutters are left open on a night. I only noticed it because we are not used to traffic noise. Lovely Hosts are on hand for information of how to get somewhere and recommendations for where to eat and get the best Tapas. A totally chilling and relaxing holiday with lots to see in very beautiful and contrasting landscapes in true Spain. Definately didn't miss the commercialism of the resorts and can't wait to go back to explore further afield. Will certainly be recommending to friends and family too. Response: Thankyou for a great review, hope to see you all back one day? |

An excellent property with great facilities run by very friendly hosts that have the 'on hand to help but unintrusive' down to a fine art! The villa is spacious and well laid out, the pool is perfect for everyone, the shallow end is great for young children and the deeper end is great for splashing about, jumping and diving in or just enjoying a quiet swim. The town of Baza mixes old and new with plenty see. A short drive you are in the national park and for the brave it's well worth driving the 'mountain road' from one side to the other as the views are breathtaking. Lake Negratin is a must and for the hungry try the mixed grill at Freila beach- I've never seen so much meat on 1 plate! Slightly further away is Mojacar beach, a beautiful town on a hill with a more 'touristy' part on the coast. There is also Mini Hollywood at Tabernas, where spaghetti westerns were once filmed, here there is the old town of the wild west, a pool to refresh in and a great zoo! make sure you get there early as it's a full day out. Other places that are a must to visit is the gorge at Castril, Guadix (or quidich if your my better half!) and Granada and the science museum (great interactive time for children and adults). All in all we had a fantastic holiday, age range was 5 - 40 with plenty to see and do to keep everyone happy. We shall certainly be returning for another reaxing holiday! Response: Thankyou for your lovely comments. Angie |

Ideal for a secluded family holiday but with plenty of sightseeing/activities in the area. The apartment is spacious with all the essentials required for a self catering holiday. Great pool and outdoor dining area. Baza town 5 mins in car, great for essentials and shopping. Angie is very obliging and a great source of information. The Alhambra in Granada is a must see, about 80 minutes drive, but allow all day to see the spectacular monument. Water park in Vera (90mins) small but clean, good beaches. Antequerra (2hours) attractive town with historic sights, worth a visit. Response: Thankyou to a lovely family, we enjoyed having you. Angie |
Guestbook for Almendra apartment
Almendra is a beautiful little oasis..... Spectacular scenery all around Baza, not what you expect from Spain.
Plus; lying by the pool - doing absolutey nothing - does'nt get much better.
Thanks, Alan and Elizabeth, Glasgow.
It was purely by accident that we found this apartment and were unsure as we thought it was a little isolated. How wrong we were and how glad we found it.......... as there is ample to see and do.
A huge thankyou, Karen, Terry, Jordan & Connor, Worthing West Sussex.
Thankyou for a lovely stay. We really enjoyed the apartment, the pool, Baza, Castril, the Lake, Alhambra and your hospitality, hope to see you again. Kristen, Tine, Ida and Jonas. Denmark.
Lovely apartment and facilities. Lake well worth a visit, restaurant on the lake beach serves great food. The scenery across the mountains is stunning. Lucy Savage and Family.
