The Bavaria / Bayern / Bavarian Forest region
The Bavarian Forest, and the adjoining Bohemian Forest make up the largest range of forested mountains in Central Europe. The Bavarian Forest National Park, a few metres from the house, is the oldest in Germany. The area is full of castles, glassworks, breweries and pretty towns, on both side of the border. The air is clean and the area is peaceful. Walking, biking and winter sports are all very popular here.
Bayerisch Eisenstein area
The village has a number of restaurants, including one of the best in the area, serving Bavarian and Bohemian specialities, and cafes, shops, a railway museum with engines which can be climbed all over!, historic railway station (the only one in Europe divided between 2 countries - stand with one foot either side of the iron curtain), a small glassworks and National Park information centre. It is well served by buses and trains.
How to get there
Fly to Munich, Prague, Nuernberg, Salzburg or Linz + 2 hours drive from those airports. Or take the train. Munich is the most convenient airport. If you rent a car in Austria or Germany, check with the rental company that you can take it into the Czech Republic. Driving from the UK takes 10 hours - from Calais. Many people make an overnight stop on the way to experience a different part of Germany - we can suggest our favourite places and hotels. Train travel from the UK is possible - breakfast in London, dinner in Bayerisch Eisenstein.

Guestbook for Haus Martin Otter
The weather could not have been kinder to us on what we've found to be a superbly relaxing holiday. So many lovely walks and places of interest to explore, virtually on the doorstep. The accommodation was very comfortable, and really well appointed with everything we could possibly need. Special thanks to Martin for introducing us to the wicked ways of schnaps and to Margaret for her help in sorting out a fishing permit - the trout nearly snapped the rod! All in all we've had a grand time.

Thank you for a wonderful Easter week. Your hospitality and excellent tour guiding experience helped make our time here thoroughly enjoyable. We will definitely recommend you to anyone who will be travelling your way. This is the perfect location to tour the diverse areas of both Germany and Czech Republic. Thank you for making our drive from Stockholm worth the trip.

It was a fantastic experience for our 2 sons and us parents. We thoroughly enjoyed the skiing, accommodation and all the dumplings!
Camporeale family, Kent, UK
We have visited Germany several times during the summer but this is our first winter holiday. What wonderful experience. Our apartment was so comfortable, well equipped, well maintained and just a stroll from some superb restaurants, recommended by Margaret & Martin. The welcome pack and availability of items for purchase is an excellent idea and a great help to the independent traveller. The amount of information supplied was outstanding. Margaret & Martin were the perfect hosts, Haus Sterr is home from home and we will certainly make another visit.

That you for the warm and friendly welcome that awaited us after a long drive. It was so good to have Margaret and Martin's generous assistance and knowledge of th area to point us in the right direction. Thomas and Isobel rate the table tennis, James appreciated the comfy pillows and William liked the comfy corner sofa! Keith (and the rest of us) thought the Poeschl-Stuben restaurant was hard to beat. I appreciated the cleanliness of the apartment and the supply of 'goodies' in the cellar. We had great fun canoeing down the Regen river, enjoying the spectacualr views from the Arber, visiting Prague, Passau and Cesky Krumlow. A lovely place to visit, exceptionally good standard of care from our hosts. Many thanks. The Ashbey family, Essex, England
