Home description

Glebe Barn is a tastefully furnished, neat cottage in rural Suffolk. With one double master bedroom en-suite, one twin bedded room and one single bedded room (raised single bunk suitable only for a child) sharing a family bathroom plus a guest cloakroom downstairs, the cottage sleeps five comfortably with a sofa bed (in living room) to accommodate a further two people if required. French doors from the living room lead straight out onto a patio/garden overlooking fields and farm land with the sea in the distance. Supplied with all mod-cons, the cottage has thoughtful extras, including a wood-burning stove (logs provided) and a welcome pack.

Built just three years ago, Glebe Barn is one of twelve homes in this innovative development designed to provide the ideal holiday getaway. Set in the extensive grounds of an Elizabethan Manor House, the semi-detached cottage benefits from the exclusive (to residents) use of a tennis court and heated swimming pool, plus hundreds of acres of farmland criss-crossed with footpaths which lead to ponds, streams, woodland and Conservation Areas. A walk, cycle or short drive will lead you to Bawdsey harbour where you can catch the tiny ferry across the water for a superb fresh sea food lunch, or just pass the time crabbing, sailing or fishing.

The picturesque towns of Woodbridge and Aldeburgh are nearby for more extensive amenities.

The East Anglia / Suffolk region

East Anglia has long been England's arable farming centre. The flat expanses of land are ideal for growing crops of wheat and barley, while the colours and the skyscapes have captured the eye of some of the nation's greatest painters.

Leisure pursuits are also provided by this landscape, with walking, boating, cycling and rding holidays top of the list.

There are also many historical towns and cities, such as the Cathedral town of Ely which was once an island, the University city of Cambridge and the historic market town of Bedford.

Bawdsey area

Bawdsey is a typical sleepy Suffolk village with a local shop / post office (their home-made fish pate is not to be missed!) and a good pub. Nearby are a number of exceptional pubs, including the Swan at Alderton. Bawdsey is ideally situated for beach holidays with the sandy beach at Bawdsey Quay providing an perfect play area for children. Small sailing dinghies can be launched from the hard to the left of the quay.

For historians, this is a dramatic and exciting piece of coastline, with its litter of wartime pill boxes, gun emplacements and a Martello tower (one of more than a dozen on the coastline running south from Suffolk to Kent, built to defend England against the Napoleonic invaders).

Winter or summer, Bawdsey is an superb holiday location for families and walkers. In winter, take a bracing walk to the coastal beach and watch the waves crashing on the shingle or take a summer stroll along the Suffolk Coastal Path with its cliff views.

If you take the traditional old foot ferry from the Quay, you can cross the estuary to the old fisherman's hamlet of Felixstowe Ferry and enjoy fresh fish sold on the beach or visit one of the two lovely pubs.

Sutton Hoo, the ancient market town of Woodbridge, Snape Concert Hall, venue for the Aldeburgh Festival and Minsmere are all within a short drive.

Guestbook for Glebe Barn

'A perfect place for our family - with two teenage boys we've loved the swimming and tennis facilities, plus all that wonderful wide open space for them to expend their energy. As you know we've stayed in Glebe Barn during both winter and summer - both seasons offer us different experiences and we seem to come back time after time!' Lynne, Stansted.

'Just to let you know we are now home, after a thoroughly enjoyable week in your wonderful holiday home. A great time was had by all including all our various guests, especially the dog who did come over for a couple of days. The weather was super until yesterday afternoon; we were even able to get in the pool on 3 days!' Caroline, Haverhill

"The week we spent in this property was almost like home from home, but better, as we were on holiday. The layout of the Manor Estate was brilliant as you never felt that you were living on top of other people. The amenities were brilliant and the views stunning. The property had everything that was needed for some rest and relaxation and the owner and her housekeeper couldn't have been more helpful. The nearby town of Woodbridge had some lovely shops and some excellent restaurants. (Especially The Galley). Suffolk is a great part of our country, a part to which we had never been before, but to which we will return. The coastal path was a short drive away and there were lots of places of interest to visit. It was such a shame that the day we decided to visit Lavenham, it rained. Our little dog enjoyed being able to join us for lunch as a lot of the pubs allow dogs into their gardens, some into the bar.A wonderful week was had by us all." The Hudson Family, Herefordshire

'Just a quick note to say thank you very much for your very warm hospitality during our stay at Glebe Barn this last week. You really have a wonderful property, set in a very quiet and peaceful location, and myself and my family all enjoyed our stay immensely. We would most certainly recommend it to our friends and family.' The Humphrey Family, Essex
