The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Gironde region
Gironde is a department on the south west coast of Aquitaine. It is the largest department of France, and boasts 126km of Atlantic coastline, and the greatest area of forestry in France. This is also France's most famous wine producing region, and wine connoisseurs must take a Gironde holiday rental at least once in their lives to sample the best of the endless Bordeaux, Gironde vineyards. Gironde is a place to enjoy the best things in life, fabulous wine, exquisite food (especially mussels), idyllic scenery and a warm welcome.
Things to do in Gironde:
There are 2750km of hiking trails, 1000km of cycle routes, 205 classified monuments and endless vineyards to enjoy in Gironde. There is certainly no shortage of fabulous scenery to stroll or cycle through when you take a Gironde holiday rental villa or self-catering holiday cottage.
The waterways of Gironde are a large influence for holidaymakers looking at holiday cottages in Gironde. Boat trips along the Dordogne, Garonne and Leyre rivers or canoeing around the Isle are not only a magnificent way to spend a day, but also a great way to discover the wildlife and architectural gems of Gironde.
The golf in Gironde is top class, with 14 courses from the coastal to the mid-vineyard! From your Gironde holiday villa, you can take to the skies in a balloon, glider, microlight or parachute with professional instruction.
Bordeaux is the capital of Gironde. A bustling city, Bordeaux, is a great place to take lunch, with many world class restaurants serving delicious local food and delicious wines. Bassin d'Archachon is an enormous natural island, with quiet beaches and huge mussel beds. However, the Aquitaine Coast is considered the best surfing spot in France due to the huge waves pounding the coast.
The climate in Gironde is temperate. It receives 2063 hours of sun per year, with an annual average temperature of over 12ºC. Winters are cool, with temperatures around 6ºC, and summers are mild, enjoying a refreshing average temperature of around 21ºC.
