The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Gironde region
Aquitaine can be divided into five departments: Dordogne, Gironde, Landes, Lot & Garonne, Pyrénées Atlantiques. In addition to their shared history, these areas have a great deal in common: They are wine producers and are particularly noted for their cultural heritage, sporting achievements and vernacular architecture.
The Romans aptly named the region Aquitania, a "land of water" as it is dotted with lakes and marshes and many important rivers such as Adour, Dordogne, Garonne, Isle and the Gironde estuary.
Extending from the Spanish border to the river Loire, the region covers a total of 41,000 sq km / 15,000sq miles. Its 270 km / 170 miles Atlantic coastline, which stretches from Pointe de Graves in the north to Hendaye at the foot of the Pyrenees, also makes it one of France's main tourist attractions.
Bordeaux (Gascon: Bordeu) is a port city in the southwest of France, with one million inhabitants in its metropolitan area at a 2007 estimate. It is the capital of the Aquitaine region, as well as the prefecture of the Gironde department. Its inhabitants are called Bordelais. With a population of 1,200,000 inhabitants in the Bordeaux-Arcachon-Libourne metropolitan area, the fifth metropolitan area in France is known to be the world's wine industry capital, and it is considered Europe's main military space and aeronautics research and construction complex. Bordeaux wine draws its name from the city around which it has been produced since the 8th century. The historic part of the city is on the UNESCO World Heritage List as "an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble" of the 18th century.
Baurech area
Tabanac is a small community of almost 1000 inhabitants, close to the Garonne right banks; part of his territory is on the flat land along the river, and the other part which includes the village is situated on the hills of Premières Côtes de Bordeaux, the beginning of the Entre-Deux-Mers district. The commune is rural, hilly and very typical. Canoeing is available locally with short training courses and 25 miles of river to explore Wine- tasting is available all around the area, with famous Bordeaux châteaux open to visitors. Many famous painters and writers lived locally and you can visit the châteaux of Montaigne, Montesquieu, Mauriac and Toulouse-Lautrec..
Chateau Sentout has many local attractions to entertain you and your family: Medieval villages and towns: St Emilion, La Réole, Bazas, etc and the colourful markets in Créon (Wed) and Cadillac (Sat). There are boat tours on the Garonne and Dordogne, a stillt school at St Symphorien, Aquacity at Arcachon, Ecomusée at Marqueze. The coast is within an hour’s drive and boast miles of sandy beaches with all the usual facilities of sailing, surfing etc.
