Enquire nowThe Loire Valley / Maine-et-Loire region
The Loire Valley is known as the 'Garden of France' thanks to its temperate climate and abundant local produce. It is also designated as a UNESCO Word Heritage site
Maine et Loire to the west of the region has many attractions to choose from. The famous chateau town of Saumur has spectacular views of the River Loire and is home of the the French cavalry and the national riding school, the Cadre Noir.
Angers, the regional capital known as "Black Angers" for the colour of its slate, houses the tapestry series, the fourteenth-century Apocalypse and the twentieth-century Chant du Monde.
Le Mans with its famous racing circuit is less than an hour's drive to the north. The largest city in the region, Tours, is a similar distance to the east and is a great place for eating out.
The region is famous for its many and varied chateaux , abbeys, cathedrals and troglodyte caves. It was the home of the Plantagenets - Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart are all buried nearby at Fontevraud Abbey. Joan of Arc and Rabelais have links to the château town of Chinon 30kms to the West.
There are wonderful vineyards close to the River Loire at Saumur, Chinon and Bourgeuil with Saumur being especially well known for its sparkling wines.
For those with outdoor interests, the rivers and lakes of the region host a wide range of watersports such as fishing, sailing, canoeing and swimming. There are also plenty of forests and paths for cycling, walking and horse riding while for golfers, there are a good number of first class golf courses in the area.
The Bauge / Pontigne area
The nearest facilities are at Baugé, which can meet all your immediate needs. It is a bustling friendly little town with its own history and chateau, the seat of Duke René of Anjou in the 15th century. The hamlet of Pontigné has a spiral church tower and is one of the "cloches tor d'Europe".
One of the regions' finest golf clubs is only 5kms away at Baugé. There is also a camp site on the edge of the town which provides facilties open to the public including a swimming pool, tennis courts and bicycle hire. For the walkers and cyclists, the quiet lanes close to the cottage are ideal and the beautiful forest of Chandelais is only a 10 minute drive away.
Try the swimming lakes with beaches at La Flèche and Mansigne near Le Lude or the fishing / boating lake at Rillé. There is also fun for all the family with boat trips on the Loire at Saumur or karting at Neuillé-Pont-Pierre between Chateau la Vallières and Tours.
