About this location

The Penang region

The island of Penang, also known as the pearle of the orient.

Penang is an island with a wide variety of landscapes and things to do. Penang has a lovely climate, a beach and an untouched jungle. The roads are well maintained and there are lots of things for sale for example Potatos, peanutbutter and many other European products. Do you prefer to eat out? Well, then you will be spoiled for choice with a large varity of cheap or expensive restaurants.

On Penang you will find the town of Georgetown which has lots of shops and places of interest. One of the best and fun ways to discover Georgetown is by bicycle taxi. The driver will tell you with pride all there is to know about his town. You will be driving through Chinatown, Little India and you will visit one of the beautiful tempels.

We also recommend a trip to Penanghill, where you will have a lovely panoramic view of the island and you can also see the mainland of Malaysia.

From Penang you can also go on a trip to for example the cooler regions like Cameron Highlands. Or you can go on a boat trip which takes 2 1/2 hours and will take you to the island of Langkawi with its beautiful beaches. It is also possible to make a city trip to Kuala Lumpur from Penang. The best way to travel is by plane with Airasia ( the cheapest ) and this will only take you 45 minutes.

Penang is a lovely island to escape the cold winter months. It is least effected by the tsunami and ready and able to receive guests.

Teluk Bahang ( fishermans´s village ), Butterfly Farm, Tropical Fruit Farm,Kampungs in the south, Penang Hill, Kek Lok Si temple, Jungle walks from Teluk Bahang Penang Bridge, Botanical Gardens.

Beaches, Shops, Pasar Malam ( evening market ).

China Town, Little India, Komtar, Fort Cornwallis, Clock Tower, Espalande, Koo Kong Si, Fat Tze Kong Si, Yap Kong Si, Street of Harmony, Trishaw ( cycle taxi ), Thai temple and Burmese temple ( Lorong Burma ), Lorong Bangkok ( beautiful Chinese houses), Lorong Kulit ( daily market ), Houses on stilts( near the jetty ), The Garage.

BUS: Bus from Georgetown to Batu Ferringhi, which is the best way to travel, goes approximately every 20 minutes. Fares are really cheap RM 2,- for one way ticket.

TAXI'S: Whenever you travel by taxi make sure that you come to an agreement on the fare before you drive. From Georgetown to Batu Ferringhi should not cost more than RM35,-. From the Ferringhi Beach Hotel to Batu Ferringhi should cost you about RM10,- and from Tanjung Bunga to Batu Ferringhi about RM15,.

SHOPPING: Gurney Plaza, Island Plaza, Midlands Park, Komtar, Pragin Mall, Queensbay Mall, Bukit Jambul, Pulau Tikus, The Garage.

MARKETS: The best known evening market ( Pasar Malam ) is in Batu Ferringhi and a daily market in Lorong Kulit in Georgetown ( fruit, vegetables and a flea market until 2 pm ).

EAT: Everywhere cheap and safe, even at the hawker stalls!!! All foods from different regions are represented.

Batu Ferringhi

Batu Ferringhi is the place where the exciting life of the Pasar Malam takes place. Batu Ferringhi used to be a small fisherman village. You can still see the remains of it when you turn towards the see just after the Park Royal Hotel. Here you can still find the houses of the original inhabitants of Batu Ferringhi . There are also several small restaurants, where you can eat in the evening. Many people go for trips on the island, as Penang is an island where there is always something to do and no chance of getting bored. There are plenty of opportunities to do aquatic sports. You can rent a catamaran, surfboard or jetski (jetski from 15 minutes onwards) etcetera. You can also go parasailing or make a banana boat ride. Boats sail to for instance Monkey Island (no island, but a beach) where it is possible to snorkel. Another possibility is to book an excursion to Pula Payer (just over an hour by boat), where you can snorkel amongst the Coral Reef and feed small sharks. Anyone who does not feel like going on an excursion, there is plenty to do along the beach.

In the evening there are many stalls along the roads where you can buy anything you want. For example bags, watches, cd´s, dvd´s, clothes, suitcases and all kinds of souvenirs. You can have dinner at any of the many restaurant available. For instance House of Kampong, Deep Sea, The Last Drop or the hawker centre Global Bay and Long Beach Cafe. At the hawker centre you can choose from European, Indian or Chinese food. A great meal for four persons including drinks will cost you about RM 50. A small beer at the hawker centre costs RM 7 and a large (750 ml) RM 12. For a wide selection of European foods it is best to go to The Ship. In this replica of a galleon they serve an excellent steak. At the fish restaurant Eden, they serve the best fish dishes. During the weekend the restaurant is very busy with people from Georgetown. A taxi ride to town will cost you about RM 35 and a bus RM 2. The bus is a lot cheaper and more fun, but a taxi will get you there quicker.

Batu Ferringhi, the energy of life just 5 minutes walk from the Apartment!

"Everything we wanted and more"

We are on our way home after spending a full month at Patricia's apartment.

I will start with our host, Patricia, who is a wonderfully warm and welcoming host. From the first time I contacted her she was quick to respond and answered all my questions patiently and fully. The day we arrived she was there to greet us and to show us all we needed to know about our new home. She even offered to take us grocery shopping that day but we were too jet lagged to take her up on her kind offer.

The apartment is spacious, bright and nicely furnished. Over Christmas there were six adults staying there but it never felt crowded. There is a balcony with an incredible view of the sea that was perfect for morning coffee and evening relaxing. It gets quite hot in the afternoon because it is in full sun then. The dining table seats six people comfortably and although we didn't cook many dinners, it was well used for breakfast, lunch and evening card games. There are air conditioners in all the rooms that worked very well. There are also fans in each room. We barely used the A/C in the living area because the fans were enough to keep it comfortable. We turned it on in the bedrooms shortly before going to bed and they cooled down quickly. There is an ensuite bathroom with shower and tub in the master bedroom and a second bathroom with shower. The water heats quickly and the showers had lots of pressure. The kitchen is equipped with everything you might need for cooking but with the abundance of food available on the Main Street, cooking wasn't high on our list. The building can be a bit noisy at times, just because of the way it is built - sounds echo throughout the open areas, but it was never enough to interfere with our enjoyment of the apartment.

As for location, it is a 10 minute walk down to the Main Street where the night market takes place every night and where there are endless restaurants and massage places. Some of the other apartments we had considered were a ways out of Batu Ferringgi which would have been inconvenient but this one is in a great location. If you have mobility issues it would be difficult as coming back is uphill and the section between the gates of the complex and the building has a steep incline. We are retired and not young anymore but we didn't find it unmanageable. We grumbled every time we walked up but we actually appreciated the opportunity to work off some of that great food. There is a very nice swimming pool on the property as well, perfect for a refreshing dip.

Overall, this is a wonderful place to spend time and I highly recommend it. You won't find a better host.

Thank you for such a lovely detailed great review and your very kind words. Very happy that you had a great time at my condo and i was very pleased having you such a great caring loving guests. Please contact me anytime you wish to return. All the best, happy traveling always. Warmest regards, Pat
