The West Country region
Somerset's beautiful countryside has attracted many famous individuals throughout history; including Sir William Wordsworth, an English poet laureate of the 19th Century. Somerset has great historical significance, and has played a part in every period including the Roman Conquest, the Norman invasion, the War of the Roses, and even right up till the present day!
Along with the rest of South West England, we have a temperate climate which is generally wetter and milder than the rest of England. The average annual sunshine totals between 1,400 and 1,600 hours.
There are many tourist attractions within easy driving distance, such as Stonehenge, Longleat House and Safari Park, Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole…
Grove Lodge is set in the Cotswolds, which has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The surrounding area is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest. We are part of Wiltshire but are right on the boundary of Bath and North East Somerset.
A superb local pub, The Quarryman's Arms, is only a few minutes walk away from Grove Lodge and is well known for its great food and friendly atmosphere. Enthusiastic walkers will enjoy the nearby public footpaths, which will lead you through fields of sunflowers in the summer, woodland and the beautiful surrounding countryside. For those interested in caves and potholing, Box has a labyrinth of caves and tunnels to explore. Box is also the location of Brunel's famous and impressive Box Tunnel.
The village of Box is a very short drive away from Grove Lodge (or a healthy hill walk!) and has a post office/newsagent, butchers and co-op. Neston Farm shop is a ten minute drive away and has an artisan bakery, delicatessen, organic meat, coffee shop and a play area for children with animals to feed. The pretty medieval town of Corsham is 3 miles away and offers more shopping, places to eat and drink, as well as more to see. The unpoiled National Trust village of Lacock (where Harry Potter, Emma and Pride and Prejudice were filmed, among others) is 8 miles away and an idyllic place to visit with its beautiful Abbey and charming tearooms. Castle Combe is another gem, filming for Steven Spielberg's
Bath is 5 miles away. A designated World Heritage Site, Bath is one of Britain's most beautiful and historically significant cities with breathtaking Roman, Medieval, Georgian and Victorian architecture - all within walking distance of its imposing cathedral and romantic riverside park.
Bath's appeal is guaranteed to impress the most discerning of visitors; indeed the Royal Crescent, the Circus, Pulteney Bridge and the Pump Room are noted among Britain's finest architectural treasures. The city also offers an incredible range of museums, award winning restaurants, galleries, gardens, theatre and cinema within the city limits. A day trip to Castle Combe, voted the prettiest village in England, is also strongly recommended.
If you are an enthusiastic golfer Bath Golf Club, established in 1880, has one of England's oldest, finest inland courses and welcomes visitors. Green fees are £40.

"Second Visit This Year!"
My husband and I visited Groveside for the second time this year. It really is a lovely place to stay. It is so peaceful and scenic. The cottage is extremely well appointed and cosy. Fiona and Giles, … More

"Home from home!"
Groveside was everything we wanted for a quiet, peaceful break. The cottage was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. We enjoyed having the wood burning stove for the cooler evenings which added to the cosiness of the cottage. The views from the property were stunning, we truly felt well away from the hustle and bustle. Fiona and Giles were always helpful and on hand if we needed them. Thank you for a relaxing holiday.

"Excellent Relaxing Retreat"
We stayed at Groveside for the first week of October and were reluctant to leave.Situated at the top of Quarry Hill in a secluded peaceful position,it is the ideal location for those wishing to explore Bath and the surrounding area, yet return home to beautiful surroundings and 'the sound of silence' in the evenings.
The house is beautifully presented with views to the garden and ideal for a couple, although four can be accomodated by using the sofa bed.
Giles & Fiona, the owners, are on hand should you need them [we did] however your privacy is guaranteed with the door open on arrival and keys hanging in the kitchen.Nice touch.
If the sign of a wonderful holiday means saying 'we'll be back' then we'll be back.Hopefully sooner rather than later.
Thank you Giles & Fiona

Cottage was just perfect! Attention to detail second to none! Welcome pack and provisions in cupboards were a fab touch! Been to cottages and lodges where not even a tea bag was provided but not here. Bath and numerous scenic trips only a few miles away, pub for tea and drinks a short walk along the road. Daily visits from the chickens and cats were a welcome bonus. Would def recommend to family and friends.

"Cozy cottage in a stunningly beautiful location near Bath."
My fiancee and I planned a trip to the Bath area from the United States, and, coming to England for the first time since I was 12, I wanted to live in a cottage and get away from the "hotel" experience. I am so glad we did, as it is absolutely gorgeous and perfect.
The cottage is situated on Box Hill - about a ten minute drive from downtown Bath. The location is quiet -- hardly a car drove by as the house is located on a dirt road -- and affords incredible views over the Box Valley that include beautiful farmland and, in the far distance, the yellow stone of Bath.
We arrived -- my first experience driving on the left side of the road! - near the end of the day and the front door was open with a key hanging in the kitchen. The owners left a wonderful card welcoming us and hoping we enjoyed our stay. There is a handy booklet with tips about walking paths, parking in Bath, operating the electric oven, and more. It was very useful to have and made our adjustment to British accomodation easy as could be.
The rooms were all beautifully decorated, clean, and comfy as could be. The bedroom had a large cupboard for clothing, a hanging rack for clothes, and more. The living room has a wood stove for cold nights, a small TV with a few channels, and a good selection of DVDs for rainy nights. There is wifi, which is nice for checking in with family and friends.
The kitchen is beautiful and came with a bottle of rose, milk, and eggs.
The backyard is huge and was freshly mowed when we arrived. There's two picnic tables, which were perfect for having morning tea while writing an email outside.
Just down the road - literally a two-minute walk is The Quarryman's Arms, our favorite pub we came across in England. Fantastic food, friendly bartenders, and stunning views of the valley. As an added bonus, there's a backyard "beer garden" where you can take your pint and sit outside on a nice night watching the sunset. Just perfect.
I can't recommend this cottage enough. We're coming back next year and hopefully every year afterwards! It's just a perfect cottage in a perfect location!

"Beautiful cottage in a gorgeous area, heavenly!!"
We were looking for a cottage somewhere in the countryside but close enough to Bath city centre to allow us to enjoy the best of both worlds, and we were absolutely thrilled with this find!
Set in Wiltshire overlooking sweeping views of the countryside hills, we felt like we were hidden away on this beautiful farm, but being only 15 minutes drive away from Bath city centre, it was so convenient and exactly what we were after.
We arrived after our journey from London with me in a relatively bad mood, due to me nursing a horrible cold that I was sure would ruin our Babymoon completely!! But as soon as I walked through the gate of the cottage and caught a glimpse of the surroundings my mood lifted - and when I walked through the door and saw the cosy living room and log burner in the fireplace, I KNEW this would be my perfect medicine!!
And it was - a night curled up under the blankets in front of the telly with the fire roaring was enough to fix me up good and proper!! The kitchen is well equipped, and the bed is SO comfortable - me being 7 months pregnant, I was sure that I would struggle to get a good night's sleep, but was shocked when I woke up the next morning having slept better than I do in my own bed!!
Anyway, I could go on for ages about this place, but all I'll say is, if you want a lovely cottage somewhere in Wiltshire that's close to Bath, then don't hesitate, book this place now!!
