The West Country / Somerset region

Somerset's beautiful countryside has attracted many famous individuals throughout history; including Sir William Wordsworth, an English poet laureate of the 19th Century. Somerset has great historical significance, and has played a part in every period including the Roman Conquest, the Norman invasion, the War of the Roses, and even right up till the present day!
Along with the rest of South West England, we have a temperate climate which is generally wetter and milder than the rest of England. The average annual sunshine totals between 1,400 and 1,600 hours.
There are many tourist attractions within easy driving distance, such as Stonehenge, Longleat House and Safari Park, Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole…
The Bath / Corsham area
Groveside is set in the Cotswolds, which has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The surrounding area is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest. We are part of Wiltshire but are right on the boundary of Bath and North East Somerset.
A superb local pub, The Quarryman’s Arms, is only a few minutes walk away from Groveside and is well known for its great food and friendly atmosphere. Enthusiastic walkers will enjoy the nearby public footpaths, which will lead you through fields of sunflowers in the summer, woodland and the beautiful surrounding countryside. For those interested in caves and potholing, Box has a labyrinth of caves and tunnels to explore. Box is also the location of Brunel’s famous and impressive Box Tunnel.
The village of Box is a very short drive away from Groveside (or a healthy hill walk!) and has a post office/newsagent, butchers and co-op. Neston Farm shop is a ten minute drive away and has an artisan bakery, delicatessen, organic meat, coffee shop and a play area for children with animals to feed. The pretty medieval town of Corsham is 3 miles away and offers more shopping, places to eat and drink, as well as more to see. The unspoiled National Trust village of Lacock (where Harry Potter, Emma and Pride and Prejudice were filmed, among others) is 8 miles away and an idyllic place to visit with its beautiful Abbey and charming tearooms.
Bath is 5 miles away. A designated World Heritage Site, Bath is one of Britain’s most beautiful and historically significant cities with breathtaking Roman, Medieval, Georgian and Victorian architecture - all within walking distance of its imposing cathedral and romantic riverside park.
Bath's appeal is guaranteed to impress the most discerning of visitors; indeed the Royal Crescent, the Circus, Pulteney Bridge and the Pump Room are noted among Britain's finest architectural treasures. The city also offers an incredible range of museums, award winning restaurants, galleries, gardens, theatre and cinema within the city limits. A day trip to Castle Combe, voted the prettiest village in England, is also strongly recommended.
If you are an enthusiastic golfer Bath Golf Club, established in 1880, has one of England's oldest, finest inland courses and welcomes visitors. Green fees are £40.
